Capital One boards up Westbard ATM (Photos)

What's in your wallet? It doesn't really matter anymore at 5370 Westbard Avenue in Bethesda. Capital One has boarded up its ATM inside the venerable glassed-in structure at the edge of the Westwood Shopping Center parking lot. Will the new Westbard Square development have any bank? Stay tuned.

That's a loss for me because I used it. The nearest Capital One now is on Mass Ave. in Spring Valley, near Millie's.

Capital One has dramatically reduced its locations and ATM kiosks. There used to be 4 full-service branches across the downtown Bethesda area (perhaps "overreach"), but now there is only one. The branch and ATM machine in/next to the Safeway at Sangamore are gone, too. They've also cut back on hours.

The next closest Capital One locations that I'm aware of are at Georgetown Square (Old Georgetown Road) and Cabin John Mall.

I understand that adjustments are needed with the shift to online banking, but other banks don't seem to have made similar cuts, and many are open on Saturdays and until 6 at least 1 day a week (= in-person convenience if needed)

The only branch in walkable B-town is right next to Triangle Towers.

@1:07 PM - Capital One, according to an article in "View from the Wing", CO is scaling back its banking services to the general public and focusing more on the business customer in the future. Note; it's CO Venture card promotion of airport clubs beginning with IAD.

@9:12 AM, Thanks for the additional info. Contrary to their "consumer-friendly" come-see-the new-us adverts and promos. What a shocker ...

@4:42 AM The former flagship branch in downtown Bethesda still has the Chevy Chase logo and flag.

Closed: Westbard branch - Little Falls Branch - Bethesda Avenue branch - and now Westbard ATM. I contacted CapitalOne about this and no reply. Thanks CO.

@5:27...would you mind keeping us updated on what they say? I have heard that they won't be back at Westbard but I could be wrong. Thanks!

Is it possible that this closure is because it is in the way of the new construction of the next phase?

Brutha' teller said I need to show valid ID for simply depositing $50.00 cash INTO MY checking account... Because I guess I am a drug dealer or big money launderer. God I miss CHCH Bank.

    @ 5:25 PM -

Why would you need to go to a teller to make a cash deposit? My bank lets me make cash deposits directly into the ATM machine, without using an envelope.

I've only needed to go inside a bank branch about 3 times in the past decade.

Because their ATM machine is all fancy and DOESN'T work even after numerous complaints to the powers that be. The rollers chew up the bill etc, and getting one's card back out becomes paramount. That's how bad things have become. An ATM you cannot trust so going inside and having to deal with an employee is a must. -- Is this response acceptable to you big man who probably never used paper money in his entire life, Mr Venmo maggot! Stay in your monetary lane.
