Aventino and AP Pizza Shop may have missed their hoped-for October 2023 opening date, but there are visible signs that the wait may not be much longer for chef-owner Mike Friedman's newest venture at 4747 Bethesda Avenue. The outdoor takeout window has been installed on the storefront, and the glass panes are in place. Tony Manero would approve!! Alas, all windows are still papered over, so the status of the interior fit-out remains a mystery for now.

Does anyone know if this pizza is any good? I haven't been tracking this cause their opening is taking so long. Do they have other locations or what? Lots of pizza around and maybe too much now. Anthony's is really good and Andy's is ok but not great in my view. Frank Pepe is far superior to any that have recently come.
ReplyDeleteAnother pizza place...how exciting.
ReplyDeleteMy NY friends think that Corner Slice is the closest they've found to NYC pizza. Andy's is a distant second.
ReplyDeleteCinco,
ReplyDeleteI worry about your NY friends. Corner Slice is one of the most average (and that's being nice) slices around. It's never really attracted and is never busy. They survive on mostly off duty METRO drivers, construction workers and office dwellers. They do zero family business, take the soccer team out for a bite and the like. In fact, I've never heard anyone talk about it or say they got their pizza and liked it. Now, as for Andy's, I'm with your friends. Andy's is very, very good. On par with NYC? Sure, maybe the pizza shop on the corner and I say that with great affection for classic NYC pizza. In fact, I was in NYC yesterday and had some. Best in NYC though? John's on Bleeker comes to mind. This new place has some competition no doubt and better be good or be gone.
I got served a slice a guy pulled out my hand and handed to me on his palm right after he handled money. No thanks
ReplyDeleteThat was at Corner Slice, btw.
DeleteCalling Aventino "another pizza place" because there's a pizza section to the menu and they have a takeout side business is dopey as hell.
ReplyDeleteMy current favorite is colony pizza in cabin John, kind of in an odd spot in the back of the "mall". Looks like an Irish bar but is great and reasonable cost.
