Police impersonator makes traffic stop in Chevy Chase

Montgomery County police are investigating a disturbing incident that occurred on Thursday, April 16, 2026 in Chevy Chase. At 9:42 PM that evening, police say, a driver on Connecticut Avenue was pulled over by a vehicle equipped with police lights at West Irving Street. That is just north of Chevy Chase Circle. Police have not yet disclosed what the alleged police impersonator told the driver. But they say he did not identify himself to the victim, did not display or show any credentials, and did not issue a citation. He ultimately let the driver go on their way.

Police have not released a description of the suspect, nor of the suspect's vehicle, but say they are investigating the incident. In the meantime, be alert that this person could still be in the area. If you are ordered to pull over and have reason to doubt the individual is an actual police officer, turn on your hazard lights and proceed slowly to give the impression you are looking for a safe place to pull over, but don't stop. Call 911 and ask the operator to confirm the identity of the officer. Keep your doors locked, and do not stop or exit your vehicle until the real police are able to intervene.

I've heard similar advice before, and it makes sense, but I'm just wondering, Robert: what advice does MCPD officially offer for a situation like this? I just checked their website, and found nothing. Maybe one of their leaders would go on record with you in an interview about this?

You wouldn’t do anything. Shush.

This is great news! If private citizens are willing to step up like this, we can save a lot of money that would otherwise be spent on training actual sworn officers. This behavior should be encouraged!

Imagine the savings if otherwise un(under)employed area residents began vigilante garbage collection, snow plowing, fire suppression, or building code enforcement. This is great news!

"Maybe one of their leaders" Who's on first?

Pretty gutsy perp, lots of 'real' po-po going that way, too. Wanton disregard and no respect or worry.

Don't hold your breath.

At least the impersonator actually got out of his fake vehicle unlike the real police who stayed IN his county issued patrol car at that infamous street takeover (coincidentally nearby).

Inasmuch as it is in the same police district, perhaps. W. Irving Street and East-West Highway are 1.28 miles away and about six social strata.

They were called the velocity verifiers.

If only our county police were as fearless and resolute as you, @ 12:30! Pray tell, may we assume your application has been accepted to join the next class of MCPD recruits, to show them all how better to face down a marauding, amped-up crowd one hundred-plus strong who vastly outnumber your resources?
