The Purple Line project is many years behind schedule, but the downtown Bethesda station for the future light rail line to New Carrollton is beginning to round into shape. Looking into the tunnel opening from Bethesda Row, one can see the passenger platform above the track beds. Also visible are the stairs and escalator access to the future station. Ventilation equipment has been installed, according to the project team.
According to Ray Biggs, II, Purple Line Senior Project Director for the Maryland Transit Administration, the project is now more than 74% complete. 35% of track installation is finished. Several miles of sidewalks have been installed. And 20 of 21 future stations are under construction, with 12 station canopies installed.

Robert: How would they extend this to Westbard if they wanted to?
The multi-billion dollar boondoggle that the tax payers can't afford and that no one, relative to never-ending costs, will ever ride.
But ... hope it gets finished and is not left to languish as only partially completed ...
The Simpsons Monorail episode.
Let’s not forget the Idiotic Idea Marc Elrich had to just have 1 Track instead of 2 in the Station.
Thank Goodness the MD Transportation Administration said NO to him on that !
If extended to Westward, they would build a track, or tracks across Woodmont and Bethesda, then follow the Capital Crescent Trail to Westward. Light rail tracks can cross roads, sidewalks and plazas at grade.
1:05 - Yes. Good point
Purple Train In Vain #TheClash
David Alpert and Dan Reed over at Greater Greater Washington blog have been salivating to announce extension to Westbard and on to Little Falls. Right of way is 100% publicly owned and graded.
Seems even the most successful businesses that venture here last for no more than five years, max. Of course many fail way earlier and some seem to never gain traction at all. It seems pretty safe, still, to project out a moderately healthy business climate for many five years, but anything more would be insane considering the possible crime degradation that comes with our general suburban nature, soon magnified by our new wonderful Purple line. Our 'leaders' don't really grasp 'cause and effect.'
We wish, but it'll never happen
Bot speaking gibberish. Sad!
“..on to Little Falls.”? You mean to the River? It seems like they’d have to convert Westland MS to a railroad depot/turnaround.
An extension connect to the Silver Line at McLean would be far more useful than that Bridge To Nowhere much farther north. 2-seat ride to Tysons and Dulles!
10:31. I think.i.agree with you.... it's pretty naive to think Bethesda will be some crime free 'island' when we are actually getting to be one iof the most accessible, and inviting crime 'magnets' (primarily due to lack of prosecutorial rigor) in reality.
You know that’s their plan God help us
Bingo
"prosecutorial rigor" words that don't go together in MoCo.
Whaddaya mean, boondoggle? Looks like the bridge over Jones Mill / Jones Bridge will, after 5 years of inept workmanship, be finished by 2030!! Seriously, a tiny bridge for 2 lanes of traffic is still in cluster -f shape. Sad.
It will be "Smash & Grab & Vanish" galore!
