Follow the sign to Big Planet Comics in Bethesda (Photos)

Big Planet Comics
' new Bethesda location at 7939 Norfolk Avenue doesn't have the Big Window its old Cordell Avenue storefront had, with all of the neon superhero logos that could catch the attention of comic book lovers passing by. Yesterday, the shop put out these sandwich board images on the sidewalk to point True Believers in the right direction. One features the classic comic strip character Nancy, who has recently enjoyed a reboot by artist Olivia Jaimes, which The Washington Post should publish every day instead of just Sundays. The other has a more contemporary Marvel character, Spider-Gwen. Excelsior!

Big Planet Comics founder retires, Bethesda shop to continue under longtime employee

After more than 36 years in business, Big Planet Comics founder Joel Pollack is calling it a career. Big Planet announced Pollack's retirement in a press release yesterday. Not to worry, true believers - Nick Liappis, a Big Planet veteran who currently manages the U Street shop, will be taking charge of the Bethesda store at 7939 Norfolk Avenue, Suite 200.

The Bethesda store will now be open for in-store shopping during the following hours: 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM Tuesday - Friday, 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays and Mondays. Big Planet is even more valuable today than it was three decades ago, as the days of comic racks in the local convenience or grocery store have ended, as have bookstores in downtown Bethesda. If you want to browse for comic books, Big Planet Comics is it at this point.

Big Planet Comics to celebrate the big 3-0 in Bethesda July 4

We've seen venerable Bethesda businesses like Bruce Variety and Beyda's Lad & Lassie close for good this year, and a number of newer stores call it a career. Here's a longtime Bethesda success story that's still going strong in the Woodmont Triangle: Big Planet Comics.

The comic book shop will turn 30 years old on July 11 this year, impressive by any measure. Each year they celebrate their birthday on July 4 with a special one-day sale. They only close two days out of the year, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Stop by on July 4 this year for special savings.

What's new this week at Big Planet? To name a few:

Action Comics #958
Aquaman #1
Archie #9
Deadpool vs. Gambit #1
Detective Comics #935
Dr. Strange #9
The Flash #1
Justice League #52
Mighty Thor #8
Scarlet Witch #7
Suicide Squad Most Wanted Deadshot Katana #6

DARK KNIGHT RISES POSTER VANISHES FROM BIG PLANET COMICS WINDOW FOLLOWING COLORADO TRAGEDY

Remember that Dark Knight Rises poster in the front window of Big Planet Comics on Cordell Avenue?

Gone.

After the Colorado shootings, the poster has been removed.  In related Big Planet news, the third issue of Batman Incorporated that had been scheduled to go on sale Wednesday was postponed until August 22.

Artist Chris Burnham said releasing the violent comic now would be "wholly inappropriate."

NEW
BIG PLANET COMICS
STOREFRONT IN
TRIANGLE TOWERS
LIGHTS UP THE NIGHT

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive!!!

Big Planet Comics has moved into its new downtown Bethesda location, in Triangle Towers on Cordell Avenue.  Adding color and light to the new storefront are these awesome Batman and Superman logo signs in the window.

The Superman logo remains the best of all superheroes.  This is one of the better Batman logos, although I'm still partial to the Batman Forever version.

EXCLUSIVE PICS

OF

BIG PLANET COMICS'

NEW BETHESDA

STOREFRONT

The first sign - literally - of the new Big Planet Comics shop in Triangle Towers is up.

A neon sign is about all there is right now, but this Wednesday, April 18, Big Planet moves from its current location at 4908 Fairmont Avenue, to this landmark Bethesda apartment tower at 4849 Cordell Avenue.

The storefront will be behind the car in the above photo.

An interesting fact about Triangle Towers: WHFS first broadcast from this building, and there is still a radio broadcast antenna on the building's roof.

BETHESDA'S
BIG PLANET COMICS
IS MOVING

What may soon be the last bastion of comic books in Montgomery County is moving. Fortunately, true believers, Big Planet Comics will be moving just a couple of blocks from its current location at 4908 Fairmont Avenue.

On April 18, Big Planet will reopen in a brand new spot at 4849 Cordell Avenue. So they're staying right here in Bethesda.

That block of Fairmont Avenue is undergoing perhaps the biggest upheaval of any street in "Old Town" Bethesda. Except for Relic and Bold Bite, and a few who may stagger around from BlackFinn, it is dark and dead at night. A number of storefronts are vacant, and one building is even condemned - "Do not go in there," as Ace Ventura once said!

JBG is building a new residential building at the corner of Fairmont and Norfolk, and there are some complaints that the ground floor will not have active businesses at night on Fairmont. That is indeed something to fix about that project, as the whole point is to activate a dead block there at night.

Expect more tear downs on that block of Fairmont in the next 1-3 years. But the street is a great location with lots of promise.
