PopUp Bagels, the viral bagel sensation, is coming soon to downtown Bethesda. Their shop will be located in the ground floor of the Solaire 7607 Old Georgetown apartment tower at 7607 Old Georgetown Road. Founded as a side hobby during the pandemic by Adam Goldberg and Jeff Lewis in Westport, Connecticut, PopUp Bagels has grown into a chain of bricks-and-mortar bakery shops with locations in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Florida, North Carolina, and California. Bethesda will be the chain's first D.C.-area location.
Bagels are served hot and fresh out of the oven every 3-4 minutes, and they are the main attraction on a very simple menu - not the bagel sandwiches you typically see on social media. Smaller than the typical bagel, PopUp Bagels are served unsliced, to keep them warm. They are crisp on the outside, while their interiors are characterized as pillowy and fluffy. Customers are encouraged to "grip, rip, and dip" their hot bagels in a selection of schmears. Cream cheese, scallion cream cheese, butter, and vegan scallion butter are always on the menu, but a rotating list of limited-time-only schmears changes weekly, ensuring there will always be a new flavor to try.
PopUp Bagels have become a viral phenomenon on TikTok and Instagram. That has caught the attention of bigger enterprises like Kraft, which just partnered with PopUp Bagels to create a Kraft Mac and Cheese schmear. With Bethesda Bagels and Georgetown Bagelry, and Call Your Mother Deli and PopUp Bagels arriving soon, Bethesda may be about to reach peak bagel. With bank branches filling so many new spaces downtown, Solaire owner Washington Property Company has really hit one out of the park with PopUp Bagels.

oh no! this is going to give CYM a run for its money! although from what i've seen online, pop up is really only amazing when they're fresh (which means bethesda bagel will still be tops for bring home!). but how lucky are we to have at least three delicious bagel options vying for our dollars and waistlines!
Fresh, hot out of the oven, every few minutes, sounds great and sounds darn tasty. What doesn't sound tasty at all is what you talked about here with the Kraft mac and cheese partnership. I can't think of too many more unappealing things to put on a fresh and hot bagel in the morning. The other issue with many of these ground floor places is attracting the local community. Parking there is nonexistent. Will it be a hit with the office workers people going back and forth to the Bethesda Metro? I'm sure it will be. But again, that's not enough to keep the doors open with the significant cost, no doubt of their monthly rent for that space.
Yes of course JAC believes that if a retail space is not located near a large surface parking lot, it is doomed to fail. Perhaps he does not realize that downtown Bethesda has an average combined resident and employees NADMS (non auto-driver mode share) of 40.6%. This means that almost 41% of residents and employees in downtown Bethesda do not use a car to get around, or to buy their bagels.They walk, bike, rideshare, car share or use public transit in the form of buses, circulator buses or Metro.
1:58 - I hope they do well, but you're dreaming if you think that enough people will be able to get to that place easily with absolutely zero parking but reasonable people can disagree
Regardless of which bagel place dominates, it just means more door dash scooters and their ilk scrambling about in a wider area especially as Winter sinks in. Another third world harbinger.
Good observation. I was recently forced to veer off and fall from my bike by a food delivery scooter guy coming at me on a narrow path. At least he stopped and helped me up.

Running red lights, stopping in the middle of traffic with their hazards on to make a delivery, swerving in and out of lanes,.etc.
When I read the location I said I bet there's no parking, reading the comments there is no parking, poor location unless they're only interested in people who live and work there
Got these in Boston back in August. Excellent and no parking with a line down the block at 9am! They will do well.
Stopped their place in Boston in August. Excellent. And nonparking in site! Line was down the block on a weekday at 9am. Not a business suit in sight.
8:20/8:22 - That's fine but this isn't Boston. They aren't as much a car/parking culture as we are. Bethesda is becoming a good size "city" but Boston is huge by comparison. Everyone there walks and takes the T. We don't.
1:52 - The "live there" part of your comment is interesting. Where are all those people who live in the luxury apartment buildings on every corner? Bethesda is not that vibrant and businesses need to understand that that's a challenge.
I imagine walking to get your carbs helps keep the waistline down.
