Luke's Lobster has permanently closed at 7129 Bethesda Lane at Bethesda Row. Signage has been stripped from the storefront, and the interior appears cleared out. It's the end of an era, as Luke's was one of the highest profile additions of the previous decade at the Federal Realty development. Luke's was also one of the biggest names in the lobster roll fad, which never actually ended, but became such a popular item that it wound up on many restaurant menus beyond the trucks and eateries that only sold those mayonnaise and butter drenched sandwiches. Perhaps the ubiquity of the lobster roll cut into demand for the OG specialty shops.

Lobster roll there was about $15 when they opened. Lately it was up to $29 I believe. Not worth it.
It’s $42 at Salt Line.
I make my own shrimp rolls at home for a fraction of the cost of a restaurant lobster roll. I can't tell the difference and in many ways prefer mine.
This was always a fun treat and splurge! Glad Salt Line is nearby for when I truly need a fix, but as already mentioned, with such high prices it's not so much of a spontaneous decision as Luke's often was! Hope something equally exciting can fill that space!
I assume Salt Line encases it in a thick, gummy, tasteless batter, as they do with just about everything else.
6:29 - Yeah, but Salt Line was the best new addition to the Bethesda food scene when it opened and is still thriving. Food across the board right now is very expensive.
Nope! Salt Line makes it the traditional way (and both versions ... either butter, or the mayo style).
Lobster rolls have gone from fad to fade a la cupcakes. Are there any dedicated cupcake stores still around?
