100 Montaditos closes at Bethesda Row

100 Montaditos has closed at Bethesda Row. The restaurant announced the closure on its Twitter account this afternoon.

There had been rumors of the closure over the last couple of months. Those were fueled by the closure of another 100 Montaditos shop in Virginia. When contacted about those rumors in early May, a 100 Montaditos spokesperson said, "We are doing fine in Bethesda."

Obviously, that was not the case.

100 MONTADITOS BETHESDA ROW APPLIES FOR LIQUOR LICENSE (PHOTOS)

It's not that big in terms of news, but any activity at the future 100 Montaditos on Elm Street at Bethesda Row is of interest to those eagerly awaiting this opening.

A liquor license notice has been posted, as well as a large brochure detailing the different types of bread used in their Spanish-style sandwiches. And some of the bargain specials to be had certain days of the week.

Although a September opening has been announced, the September 19 liquor license hearing is a clue that the opening will probably be in the later part of the month.

100 MONTADITOS TO OPEN IN SEPTEMBER AT BETHESDA ROW (PHOTO)

The latest word is that 100 Montaditos will open in September at Bethesda Row.

Previously, the Spanish sandwich emporium was said to be opening in August, and June before that.

Patience is a virtue.

PRELIMINARY CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY AT 100 MONTADITOS AT BETHESDA ROW (PHOTOS)

Not much progress yet at the future 100 Montaditos on Elm Street. Will this restaurant make its scheduled August opening? It's theoretically possible, but if you consider the time it will take for inspections and permits at the end, I'm somewhat skeptical right now. But, let's see what they can do.

100 MONTADITOS BETHESDA OPENING DELAYED

No one is looking forward to the opening of Spanish sandwich shop 100 Montaditos at Bethesda Row more than I am.

But from what I could tell this week at the former Green Papaya space on Elm Street, the May grand opening didn't seem likely.

Nothing is going on there, and the interior renovation does not appear to be far along at all.

Sure enough, a company spokesperson is now saying the restaurant will open this summer. Which could mean as late as August, technically.

Patience is a virtue.

100 MONTADITOS TO OPEN AT BETHESDA ROW - EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

Spanish restaurant chain 100 Montaditos is bringing 100 little sandwiches, as you might have surmised from the name, to Bethesda Row.

You might say 100 Montaditos is the Luke's Lobster of sandwiches - small portions of high quality ingredients.  And while those sandwiches are not Taylor Gourmet-sized, the Spanish upstart does import bread - only it's from Spain, not Philadelphia.  Yes, the bread is coming directly from Spain.

The fillings will be familiar to Jaleo diners, but you can also get hot dogs and hamburgers for an American entree.

In my opinion, you can never have too many Spanish restaurants, but is it too much to have a second one so close to Jaleo?  I guess we'll find out in a few months.

I'm looking forward to the opening, and appreciate the creative marketing and social media approach the company is taking.  Ultimately, it sounds like a good fit for the European atmosphere around Bethesda Row.
