Kenwood cherry blossoms 2020 photo gallery

The famous Kenwood cherry blossoms don't know America is in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic, and are blooming as in any other year. Here's a look at them as cherry blossom season officially gets underway. Many Kenwood residents were concerned that the combination of stir-crazy quarantined families understandably looking for outdoor activities, and D.C. efforts to discourage crowds at the Tidal Basin cherry blossoms, would overwhelm their neighborhood. That was not the case, at least at the time these photos were taken yesterday.

Cars filled with cherry blossom lovers inched bumper-to-bumper through the streets of Kenwood yesterday, as the trees were at peak bloom. Fortunately, information suggests that Montgomery County did not close down and fine any children's lemonade stands Sunday.

First Kenwood cherry blossoms (Photos)

The buds that were opening on Friday were blooming on Saturday, as the first crowds began to descend on the picturesque Kenwood neighborhood off of River Road in Bethesda. No street parking is allowed in the neighborhood where No Parking signs are posted. No climbing on the trees is allowed, either.

As you take this virtual tour of suburbia in bloom, here's my public service announcement for the day: Remember that some Montgomery County Councilmembers, some on the Montgomery County Planning Board, and some development firms are attempting to disingenuously redefine the character of the area around Kenwood as "urban". Really?

Keep that in mind as you take this photo tour. Does this look like an urban area to you? The fact is that Kenwood, Springfield, Green Acres, Sumner and other neighborhoods that surround the commercial-industrial area along River Road and Westbard Avenue, are squarely suburban, residential neighborhoods. Let's keep them that way.

Why go downtown, when Bethesda has its own cherry blossoms? Here are some photos of the trees at their peak this weekend in the Kenwood neighborhood, off of River Road. Late last week, and over the weekend, crowds of people walked the Capital Crescent Trail over to Kenwood from downtown Bethesda. Others enjoyed a pleasant drive under the white canopy along Brookside Drive and Dorset Avenue. Click on the photos to enlarge for greater detail:
