CELEBRATE INAUGURATION AT HOME IN BETHESDA WITH CAKES AND APPAREL FROM GIANT, CVS (PHOTOS)

Despite the media hype that suggests everyone will be riding Metro and trudging through Mall crowds in DC today, the reality is that most of us will be at work or at home.

But that doesn't mean you can't celebrate the event right here in Bethesda.

Not only is TV the "best seat in the house," but you can plan your own last-minute party for 1 or a dozen.

Giant Food is taking a non-partisan approach to celebrating the inauguration, and the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Giant's theme is, "Celebrate America," emblazoned not only on its print ads, but on these Giant sheet cakes pictured below.  They are also offering the black T-shirt below, featuring the inauguration date, the American flag, and "OBAMA" on the front.

At CVS on Wisconsin Avenue, at Cheltenham Drive, the drugstore is selling fancier Obama shirts and hoodies, which feature a portrait of the reelected president on the chest.

Whatever your political beliefs may be, Happy Inauguration Day, and a peaceful Dr. King Holiday, from Robert Dyer at Bethesda Row!  I always find it an interesting day, whether the candidate I voted for has won or lost.

WHERE TO BUY CHRISTMAS TREES IN DOWNTOWN BETHESDA (PHOTOS)

A Christmas tree lot in downtown Bethesda? Yes!  It's on Hampden Lane, just up Woodmont, north of Bethesda Row.  Just follow the signs.

Better yet, buy your tree, and they will deliver it to your apartment or house within 10 miles of Bethesda!

Years ago, there used to be a Christmas tree lot on Bradley Boulevard, on the street behind the Bradley Shopping Center. What's there today? Houses.

You will also be able to buy trees from the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad, on the corner of Battery Lane and Old Georgetown Road. And from North Star on Wisconsin Avenue, along the "Green Mile" between downtown Bethesda and Friendship Heights.

CHRISTMAS TREES ARRIVE AT BETHESDA ROW (PHOTOS)

TREE-TRIMMING
MARKS OFFICIAL
START OF THE
HOLIDAY SEASON

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

Last night, less than 48 hours before the first potential snow of the holidays, Santa's helpers were bustling all about Bethesda Row.  Large Christmas trees - including the main one on Bethesda Lane - were being erected and trimmed.

Cardboard boxes of trees, ornaments and "tree parts" were strewn about, turning Bethesda Lane into a giant living room.  It was your typical home Christmas decorating process x10.

Now that Halloween is passed, it won't be long before Thanksgiving, Black Friday and December.  With snow possibly on the way, and temperatures below freezing last night in Bethesda, it's beginning to look - and feel - a lot like Christmas at Bethesda Row.

MICROSOFT POP-UP STORE TO OPEN IN BETHESDA FOR HOLIDAYS

WESTFIELD MONTGOMERY
ONE OF 32 NATIONWIDE
LOCATIONS TO PUMP UP
AMERICA FOR
SURFACE RT TABLET

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

Microsoft announced yesterday that it will open a holiday Microsoft Pop-up Store in Bethesda at Westfield Montgomery Mall.  The company did not say when the store will open, but my suggestion would be October 26.
Microsoft Store yesterday at Tyson's Corner
Why October 26?  That's when Microsoft's intriguing Surface RT tablet will be released, and the inside word is that the Surface is the raison d'etre for the pop-up stores.  Given that you will only be able to buy a Surface from a Microsoft Store, it's only sensible that the company would flesh out its spartan retail network nationwide for the tablet's launch.

At a rumored price of $199, the 32 GB Surface will be a formidable match for the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire.  While many assumed the tablet wars would produce a winner named Apple or Google, Amazon has changed the narrative in the last 12 months.  People are justified to be skeptical of Microsoft seriously threatening Apple in the gadget department (Zune, anyone?).  But the Surface Pro and RT models have generated substantial buzz this summer, buzz that became almost deafening when the $199 price rumor "leaked" four weeks ago.

Do you want a Surface?

Most will have to try one before they can answer that question.

Microsoft's Bethesda pop-up store is designed to let you do just that.

RIDE ON PULLS 26 BUSES FROM FLEET AFTER LATEST BUS FIRE, SYSTEM ON HOLIDAY SCHEDULE THURSDAY, FRIDAY

Attention Ride On riders:

Your bus will be on a "modified holiday schedule" Thursday and Friday.

Montgomery County Executive has pulled 26 Champion buses from the Ride On fleet after yet another one burst into flames.

The bus drivers' union had urged Leggett to do so for months.

One exception to the special schedule relevant to the Bethesda area is that the Route 2 bus to Walter Reed will have full service both days.

All bus routes will run, but will have 20% less frequency.
