BETHESDA ROW BLACK FRIDAY DEALS: APPLE STORE, BARNES AND NOBLE, CURRENT BOUTIQUE

Here are some of the best Bethesda Row Black Friday deals you may not have heard about.  Federal Realty distributed a nice summary of offers, but did not include these other major retailers:
BETHESDA ROW APPLE STORE

The always-secretive Apple is playing its Black Friday cards as close to the vest as you'd expect.

But wait - check the Apple Store's window wreath decoration for a possible clue!
Are those iPads? Yes!  Should we expect a discount on iPads Friday? With Apple, you have to be willing to be surprised. But that's a pretty obvious hint on the storefront.

One other thing - you can get the same prices online, or via your iPhone app Friday.

BARNES AND NOBLE
Bethesda Row's favorite hangout is offering deals on the Nook reader, and Buy One Get One 50% Off intellectual toys for intellectual kids.
CURRENT BOUTIQUE

Current is up the street from Bethesda Row at 7220 Wisconsin Avenue.  Owner Carmen Lopez says her upscale consignment shop will be giving 20% off all merchandise, all day Friday.

Labels in stock include J. Crew, BCBG, Diane Von Furstenburg,  Tory Burch, Milly, Banana Republic, Marc Jacobs and Rebecca Taylor.

For consignment, Current prefers natural fabrics like cotton, linen, silk, cashmere and wool.  Consignors will keep 50% of the item's sale price.

Current's Black Friday hours will be 10 AM - 8 PM.  Their phone number is 301-222-1114.

Happy Thanksgiving and Black Friday

NEW iPad AT BETHESDA ROW APPLE STORE (PHOTO)

While checking out the iPad Mini at the Bethesda Row Apple Store Friday, I also tested the new "regular" iPad.  It has a faster processor, a new port, and, of course, the Retina display.

ARREST, BIZARRE TWISTS IN BETHESDA BURGLARY RAMPAGE FAIL TO RESOLVE QUESTIONS

GREEN ACRES BURGLARIES
CONTINUED LONG AFTER
SUSPECT WAS TWICE-ARRESTED

KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN RELEASED;
UNDETERRED BY CHARGES,
CONTINUED BURGLARY SPREE

IS HE NOW IN CUSTODY, OR
RELEASED INTO THE
BETHESDA COMMUNITY?

A bizarre turn of events regarding the three-week Bethesda burglary rampage in the last 24 hours:

The story, which I broke here on this blog May 11, and have covered extensively and exclusively since, finally was acknowledged by police and the mainstream media yesterday.

A lone 14-year-old Bethesda resident, police announced suddenly Thursday, had been arrested and charged with four burglaries, two attempted burglaries, and one theft (of a bicycle).    In fact, he was arrested twice, first on May 9, and then - unbelievably - again the next day, when he immediately allegedly restarted his burglary spree!

More on that issue later.

The bottom line is that the statement issued, and ensuing media coverage, suggest that the burglaries listed were the only ones that occurred in Green Acres this month.  And that the crimes have ended.

But the same SpotCrime data I used to uncover the unpublicized burglaries (now vindicated as accurate) prove that this is not the case at all.

While the mention that police used the teen's stolen iPad as a homing device to nab him caught the fancy of some, more urgent questions in the Green Acres and larger Bethesda community remain unanswered at this hour.

First, and most importantly, is the suspect at large again in the community?

Police are aware - as well as court authorities - that the suspect had resumed his alleged breaking-and-entering rampage the day after he was arrested.  As odd, yet commonplace, as it was for him to be released in the first place, the second arrest should not have permitted release.

But police did not reveal if the suspect is in custody.

Is he or is he not?

And is he the only burglar, for that matter?

These questions are critical, because the following burglaries occurred in the Green Acres area long after the suspect's re-arrest:

Saturday, May 12:

Breaking and entering, burglary.  5300 block of Willard Avenue.

Friday, May 18:

Breaking and entering, burglary.  5200 block of Ventnor Road.

Sunday, May 20:

Breaking and entering, burglary. 5300 block of Yorktown Road.

Breaking and entering, burglary. 5300 block of Yorktown Road.

So while everyone is saying, "case closed" for those initial burglaries, the many others remain uncommented on by police.

Also, I am not sure why the community was never informed that the burglaries were happening, and about the important detail that the suspect was entering via basement windows.  Homeowners could have perhaps taken steps to secure such windows, had they known of that fact.

In addition, the suspect allegedly stole at least one bicycle and one iPad.  There were a number of thefts in and near Green Acres during that same period.

In fact, two more just occurred on Tuesday, May 22:

Theft from vehicle. 5400 block of Westbard Avenue.

Theft from vehicle. 4800 block of Newport Avenue.

Obviously, the police did a good job of catching the suspect.  But the list of burglaries (see below for full list) go way beyond the six referenced in the arrest announcement.  Perhaps more charges are forthcoming.  Or is there a second suspect at-large?  Or is the arrested suspect free and carrying out additional crimes?

As I said, there are so many questions at this point that I do not believe the community is ready to say, "case closed."

Finally, I'm proud to say that this blog was able to play a role in alerting the community about the burglaries while they were happening.  Authorities and media with far more reach and power than myself did not at the time.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you will continue to stop by this blog to find out not only what's going on in Bethesda, but  also - true to the masthead above - "exclusive investigative reports you won't find anywhere else."

As we await further details from police, here is the complete list of crimes related to the burglary spree:

BETHESDA ROW APPLE STORE CLOSURE IGNITES SPECULATION

What Will the Mystery "Renovations" Be?

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive!!!

The message was posted by the Bethesda Row Apple store without fanfare.  But in perhaps the most iPhone and iPad-obsessed town in the Mid-Atlantic, the reaction is one of shock.

As reported right here on this blog Sunday morning, the beloved Bethesda Row Apple store will indeed be closed today through Friday, for "renovation."

You have to understand, the Apple store is not simply a retail and repair shop for residents of downtown Bethesda.  It is a landmark!  People pose for pictures in front of it, as the luminescent Apple logo glows overhead.  The Apple store is arguably the anchor of the Bethesda Row development, and certainly the epitome of its aspirational character.

Once the surprise subsided, what does a town of iPhone toting, iPad clutching, iPod listening humans do but start speculating just what's going to be revealed on Bethesda Avenue this weekend?

I'm in the same boat as you, readers.  Although you can be sure the old, corporate media will get hold of this story by this afternoon, can their credential badges really get information out of the famously secretive Apple Corporation?

In fact, here's what I can tell you:  other Apple stores around the country - and as far away as Dubai - are closing for the same mystery renovations at the same time.   And folks in those cities are just as puzzled as we are.

It can only be so big of a renovation in only 5 days.  A Seattle Apple store that closed for about the same number of days last year reopened with a bigger Genius Bar, a new configuration of the product displays, and two Startup Bays, each outfitted with 55" monitors.  Startup Bays are the physical embodiment of Apple's shift from "Personal Setup" to "Startup Sessions."

Rumors floating around the internet include more impressive, giant wall screens, new loudspeaker systems, new store security features and renovations of "Employee Only" areas, where repairs are made and coffee breaks are taken.

No new Apple product is being released this weekend, so it can't be that.

It's likely to be more iPad "smart sign" and furniture shuffling than a planet-shifting event.

But from what we've come to expect from the late Steve Jobs and Apple, it's likely the mystery results will please customers.  And any improvements will be as practical as they are stylish.

And a week of "Why is the Apple store closed?!" and speculation will give way to a weekend of, "Have you heard about the _______ at the Bethesda Row Apple store?"

What do you think is happening at the Apple store?  Feel free to post your speculation, or inside information, in the comments below!

Maybe Siri has the answer...
