Man stabbed in Bethesda robbery

A hectic scene played out in downtown Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle late Wednesday night, May 1, 2024, after a man was allegedly stabbed and robbed. Several details remain unclear, as Montgomery County police have not publicly commented on the incident yet. Here's what we know so far, based on accounts of residents and visitors in the area, and police communications at the time:

Shortly before midnight Wednesday, there was a commotion near the 7-Eleven at 7820 Wisconsin Avenue. People in that area recall hearing a man yelling loudly. Police were dispatched to the 7-Eleven at 11:54 PM. Montgomery County police officers soon arrived at the convenience store. Bystanders were reporting that someone had been robbed.

It then seems there was a second 911 call from Tommy Joe's at 7940 Norfolk Avenue, where the male victim apparently sought help, as the restaurant and bar were still open at that hour. Police located the victim. An officer reported to a dispatcher that the victim had a "large gash" knife wound. Police said the suspect was last seen fleeing toward the Bethesda Metro station. No one I've spoken to so far was an eyewitness to the actual robbery itself.

@DCNewsLive on Twitter reported that a laptop might have been what was taken by the robber, and that the victim's wound was on his arm. @CordellTraffic reported that officers applied a tourniquet to the victim's arm, and that he was then transported to a hospital. The victim's injury was not believed to be life-threatening at the time. No further information has been released as of this writing. If this was a random attack, it is certainly one of the more shocking incidents to occur during this ongoing crime wave.

Suspect charged in Montgomery Mall stabbing

Montgomery County police have identified the suspect in the stabbing at Westfield Montgomery Mall Sunday afternoon as Jeffrey Lewis Sweeney-Grant, a resident of the 17000 block of King James Way in Gaithersburg. Detectives have charged Sweeney-Grant with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

Sweeney-Grant turned himself in to mall security guards after stabbing a 37-year-old acquaintance he had arranged to meet for coffee at the Nordstrom store cafe around 4:47 PM. The unidentified male victim has been upgraded to stable condition, following emergency surgery at a local hospital.

Detectives on the case say they have not yet identified the motive for the knife attack. Officers were seen interviewing witnesses to the stabbing yesterday at the mall. The mall remains open for business, even though some shop owners decided to close early yesterday.

A man was stabbed at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda around 5:30 PM this afternoon. The stabbing took place at the Nordstrom Marketplace Cafe, and the victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition. According to police, one male suspect is in custody.

The Nordstrom wing of the mall was closed down by police tape from the escalators onward. Some stores, such as Bath and Body Works, chose to close early. However, police said there was no immediate danger to anyone else at the mall today.

Bethesda stabbing now under investigation by police

Here's an update on a violent crime story I broke on Tuesday: The stabbing on Thoreau Drive in Bethesda is now being investigated by Montgomery County police detectives. More details are now available, as well. Police say a 23-year-old male was walking westbound on Wilson Lane (between Old Georgetown Road and Bradley Boulevard) around 1:00 AM Sunday, when a small, silver SUV stopped. Two black males in the SUV, believed to be in their 20s, offered the man a ride.

The victim accepted the offer, and was driven to a home in the 8300 block of Thoreau. As the victim walked from the SUV toward the house, he was allegedly jumped by the two men, whom he said then punched, kicked, and stabbed him multiple times. They then fled in the SUV.

Someone called 911, and the victim was transported to a local hospital. His injuries are described as non-life-threatening.

Police not only want any information you might have about this case, but in particular, they are interested in video from home surveillance cameras on Thoreau Drive and other nearby streets. They ask that you review any footage you have, and if you see suspicious activity or the silver SUV, to share that with them.
