Fashion Q returning to Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Red alert! Fashion Q is making a triumphant return to Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The Los Angeles-based fashion wholesaler closed almost exactly one year ago at the mall, after less than a year in business, a victim of the moribund Montgomery County economy. Now they're giving it another go, this time in the former Forever 21 space on Level 1, across from Build-A-Bear. 

Fashion Q traces its roots back to the 1980s. It chose its "Q" logo because a one-letter sign was cheaper than using the whole brand name. The cost savings extend to its merchandise, which is purchased wholesale here and abroad.

Call Your Mother deli prepares for August 3 opening in Bethesda

Staff at Call Your Mother deli at 4828 St. Elmo Avenue in Bethesda are making final preparations for the opening of the local chain's newest location on August 3, 2026. A final addition to the exterior is a lit logo sign that has already been activated. Inside, the chain describes the interior design as "a fun house that feels like Boca in your backyard. All of the signature bagel sandwiches CYM is known for will be on the menu, including the Jetski, the DelRay Club, and the Suncity.

"Bethesda has always felt like home for us," co-founder Andrew Dana said in a statement. "It's a community where people care deeply about supporting local businesses. We received so much love the first go round that we knew we needed a bigger space, and we're so excited to welcome folks back and meet new friends!"

Sneak peek: Shake Shack in downtown Bethesda (Photos)

Shake Shack is expected to open next month at 7535 Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda, in the ground floor of the Element 28 apartment tower. The burger chain got overly optimistic this spring in announcing a June 24 opening date, but as you can see, the interior fit-out of the restaurant is now complete. Equipment and supplies are now being loaded in, while seating and ordering kiosks are now mostly already in place. The neon signage has been lit, drawing burger lovers to peer into the windows, which you can do virtually below:

Cubano's closed for today in Bethesda to make "exciting changes"

Cubano's is temporarily closed for the day at 4907 Cordell Avenue in downtown Bethesda. The Cuban restaurant says the closure is necessary to facilitate "exciting changes." Sounds of work can be heard from inside the restaurant, where unspecified "home improvements to better serve our guests" are being made, and music is still emanating from exterior speakers. Cubano's will reopen for normal business hours tomorrow, June 29, 2026.

Toolbox leases former Flanagan's Harp & Fiddle space in Bethesda

Toolbox, a Pilates and yoga studio with a Dupont Circle location in Washington, D.C., has leased the former Flanagan's Harp & Fiddle space at 4844 Cordell Avenue. Why such a large space? Maybe because the D.C. location doubles as an upscale event space after business hours. 

Founded in 2012 by entrepreneur Iva Gotzev, the original Toolbox can host everything from corporate events to weddings, in a space that combines warm, natural surfaces with displays of art. If the same model is followed at the Bethesda location, it would be the second dedicated event venue to open in downtown Bethesda in as many years, following The Cordell at 4865 Cordell Avenue. A third, Bonvenue at 7615 Wisconsin Avenue, remains in limbo for now.

Flanagan's closed in 2020 after decades as a fixture in downtown Bethesda. What triggered the demise of a business that had weathered so many economic downturns of the past? The anti-business policies of the Montgomery County Council, and the Council's 2012 Nighttime Economy Initiative, delivered stiff body blows to every hospitality business in the County, with the latter leading to the closure of over 25 nightspots in downtown Bethesda over the ensuing years. At the time of the closure, the owner cited the County Council's Bethesda Streetery street closures, and the County's pandemic ban on live music, as the straws that broke the camel's back. The exit of Flanagan's saw Bethesda become one of the few towns in America without a single Irish pub, adding to its existing notoriety as one of the few towns in America without a St. Patrick's Day parade.

Bethesda apartment building driveway reopens after truck damaged porte-cochère

The driveway has reopened at Triangle Towers at 4835 Cordell Avenue in downtown Bethesda. It was cordoned off after a truck driver struck the porte-cochère at the main entrance last month. While the canopy has presumably been cleared as structurally sound, one of the visible damaged areas still looks pretty rough from a cosmetic standpoint. Check out the photo below:

Signage installed at PopUp Bagels in Bethesda

The sign is up at PopUp Bagels at 7607 Old Georgetown Road, in the ground floor of the Solaire 7607 Old Georgetown apartment tower. A sneak peek inside shows that the interior fit-out of the restaurant is nearly completed. PopUp Bagels is in a race against time to open before local rival Call Your Mother deli can open its own downtown Bethesda outpost.

Gorjana opens at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Gorjana has opened at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. A midsummer opening is perfect timing for this Laguna Beach-inspired jewelry boutique, even if you're more likely to be sporting pieces from your Gorjana haul at O.C., rather than in The O.C. New additions for this summer include scallop earrings, the Scallop Padlock Bay Necklace, and the 18K gold plated Crab Single Stud earring, all at surprisingly reasonable prices. Look for Gorjana on Level 1 of the mall, next to Sunglass Hut in the Nordstrom wing.

Alatri Bros. closing after today in Bethesda

Alatri Bros. will permanently shutter at the close of business tonight after ten successful years at 4926 Cordell Avenue in Bethesda. The pizzeria's head chef, Wilber Melendez, tragically and unexpectedly passed away earlier this month. A GoFundMe to cover funeral expenses and a final trip home to El Salvador for Wilber received tremendous support from the community, meeting its $15,000 goal with $295 to spare. The support by patrons of the restaurant continued yesterday, with diners packing the pizzeria for dinner. You have one last chance today and tonight to enjoy the flavors of Alatri Bros.!

Buffalo Wild Wings GO is coming to Bethesda

Just in time for football season, Buffalo Wild Wings GO will be opening a Bethesda location. It will be located at 4611-C Sangamore Road at the Shops at Sumner Place (a.k.a. Little Falls Mall). This is quite a coup for property owner W.C. & A.N. Miller, as you might have expected Regency Centers to reel in a big name like this for their nearby Westbard Square development. The Bethesda BWW GO will also be unusual in that the existing Montgomery County locations have all been on major thoroughfares. Perhaps the chicken wing chain is looking at the high traffic at this busy mall, as well as at the thousands of employees at the intelligence campus directly across the street. Even the Deep State eats lunch.

Buffalo Wild Wings' "GO" concept took off during the pandemic, when the chicken wings chain sought to capitalize on an explosion in demand for takeout orders, as well as a chance to muscle in on carryout-focused competitors like Wingstop. You'll find a slimmed-down menu at Buffalo Wild Wings GO, comprised of some of BWW's customer favorites. 

An "innovative cooking process" is able to churn out the same crispy wings you find at a regular BWW at a speedier pace, the company says. The interior set-up is designed to get customers in and out of the smaller-scale GO store as quickly as possible, especially when ordering ahead. GO also has some exclusive flavors not found at the full-size BWW. As you can see, construction is just getting started in the former Wild Bird Center space.

Agora restaurant opens in Bethesda

Agora has opened at 1 Bethesda Metro Center in the Hyatt Regency Bethesda hotel. This is the third location for the local Mediterranean restaurant chain, and its largest. The restaurant has a maximum capacity of 300 guests, including private rooms with space for up to 50, semi-private accommodations for up to 120, and a patio with room for 100 guests. Initially, Agora will be serving a dinner menu only, focused on the culinary traditions of Turkey, Greece, and Lebanon. Later this summer, breakfast, lunch, and brunch menus will be added.

Signature dishes include a slow-cooked lamb shoulder feast designed for sharing, grilled beef and lamb kebabs, grilled branzino and octopus, and traditional desserts like kunefe and baklava. Another signature at Agora is their exclusive use of Laconiko extra virgin olive oil, a premium Koroneiki olive oil recognized internationally for its exceptionally high polyphenol content, naturally low acidity, and outstanding flavor. 

Like 4-star General John Kelly, starting the day with a full breakfast is a non-negotiable must for me when traveling. The eventual addition of breakfast service here is going to be a real boon for guests at the hotel, as well as nearby residents. Dishes planned for the breakfast menu at Agora include gluten-free Mediterranean-Style Fried Eggs with asparagus, tomatoes, and mushrooms; Aegean Avocado Toast with organic poached eggs, sourdough bread, avocado, olive oil, paprika, pine nuts, and microgreens; and a Sunrise Porridge made with almond milk, pine honey, and orange zest.

Agora Restaurant Group, celebrating over 15 years of success in the region, is co-owned by husband and wife team Betul and Ismail Uslu. Ismail Uslu began his career in the hospitality industry at luxury resorts in Turkey, and sees his career coming full circle as his latest venture debuts in downtown Bethesda's most-prominent hotel. “Having spent many years working in hotels, opening Agora inside the Hyatt Regency Bethesda feels like a homecoming,” he says. “It brings together my passion for hospitality and our vision of creating a restaurant that serves both travelers and the local community.”

Fairmont Grill out before even opening in Bethesda

The long-awaited Fairmont Grill Dry Aged Kitchen won't be opening after all, at least not at 4940 Fairmont Avenue. A For Lease sign has now appeared in the window, before the restaurant even served its first steak. It's been 23 months since the Fairmont Grill announced it would be opening in this spot. With window coverings obscuring the interior all that time, it's unclear what construction work was performed, if any.

Barry's opening July 25 in Bethesda

Barry's, the fitness studio chain known for its high intensity cardio and strength classes, has set the opening date for its first Maryland location. The downtown Bethesda Barry's will open this coming Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 7272 Wisconsin Avenue. No more riding into D.C. for Red Room workouts. Special opening rates and membership packages are still available this week, including an $85 Bethesda 5-Pack that "can be used to bring guests" during the first month. Peeping Tom in Potomac

Montgomery County police responded to a report of a peeping Tom in Potomac late Friday night, July 17, 2026. The incident was reported in the 7900 block of Stable Way at 11:48 PM. That is a small townhome-style condo development at the northern terminus of Stable Way in the River Falls area.

Sheepskin Gifts & Alpaca Too returning to Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

One of the signs that the holiday shopping season isn't as far away as it seems is here once again at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Sheepskin Gifts & Alpaca Too is announcing its annual return to the mall for 2026. Coming soon signage for the seasonal apparel store has been posted at the former Sleep Number space on Level 1, between Arc'teryx and Lululemon. The holiday pop-up tends to open in September, but recently made an earlier exit in January than its typical March departure.

Squishable relocates in Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Squishable has relocated to a new spot at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. But you won't have to go far out of your way to find it. The collectible stuffed toy boutique moved directly across the corridor from its previous location. Look for Squishable on Level 1 of the mall in the Macy's wing, in the corner space between UnderArmour and Brow Art 23.

Controversial, delayed Bethesda street closure now scheduled for July 20, utility says

A controversial extended closure of a segment of Woodmont Avenue in downtown Bethesda that was delayed earlier this summer is now back on for July 20, 2026. Water utility WSSC announced today that the portion of Woodmont between Strathmore Street and Wisconsin Avenue will remain closed through early November. The closure was deemed necessary to replace a 54" large valve vault below the street. Vehicular and delivery access will be maintained for the Solaire Bethesda apartments, and the Prenuvo Bethesda medical imaging facility. 

Detour signs will be posted to guide drivers around the closure. The blockading of the secondary north-south route through downtown Bethesda will have a significant impact on traffic during July and August, due to the loss of two travel lanes on Wisconsin that are restricted to buses during the closure of three Red Line Metro stations this summer. WSSC notes that the closure could extend beyond early November if the area should experience long periods of disruptive weather.

Maryland has 2nd-worst economy in America, CNBC finds

Maryland has the second-worst economy in the U.S., CNBC found in its 2026 Worst State Economies in America survey, the results of which were released today. "Economic growth and job growth nearly flatlined in Maryland over the past year," the cable TV business channel noted in its analysis. "[H]igh costs, unpredictable taxes, and growing regulatory burdens," are each a drag on the state's economy, as is an over-reliance on government jobs and federal funds. A new IT services tax walloped businesses, sending many firms packing for greener pastures in other states. Especially hard hit by the IT tax were government contractors, a painful irony in a state where little beyond government has been growing this century.

Some factors in CNBC's criteria certainly hit Maryland where it hurts. These included job growth, economic growth, and the number of major companies headquartered in the state. The first two "flatlined" over the last 12 months, in CNBC's own word, and Maryland hasn't attracted a single new major corporate headquarters this century. In fact, the story has been the number of companies leaving the state. "Budget situation" isn't a category any Maryland elected official would want to delve into publicly. Debt? Maryland and Montgomery County are both in deadly serious trouble on that front, as well.

"Small business survival rates?" Ho ho. The ubiquitous "Going Out of Business" and "Everything must go!!!" signs in Montgomery County storefront windows tell a most tragic story indeed.

"Maryland finds itself in a deep hole in 2026, with no easy way out of it," CNBC concluded. But the picture is even bleaker than the one painted by the already-stinging rebuke of a friendly, liberal news outlet. They didn't even mention the budget apocalypse currently forecast for the state in 2030. 

Can we continue to whistle past the graveyard, raising taxes and instituting new ones? Refusing for radical ideological reasons to construct the long-delayed new Potomac River crossing to the Dulles area? Continuing to block completion of our master plan highway system? Keep on losing, and often hardly trying, in the corporate HQ relocation sweepstakes?

We could. And we just might end up topping CNBC's worst list in the future. It's one of the few things within easy reach for the buffoonish incompetents currently running Montgomery County and Maryland. After all, "We're number two - we try harder."
