Rugby Avenue resurfacing begins (Photos)

Rugby Avenue has been one of the busiest construction corridors in downtown Bethesda over the last seven years. Now that the dust has cleared on three residential building projects, and a new police station, the battered surface of the Woodmont Triangle thoroughfare is finally being addressed. Resurfacing of the roadway has begun. Watch for lane closures as work progresses.

WSSC nighttime work on Rugby Avenue starting Sunday night

Another part of the WSSC project to replace the Battery Lane water main is scheduled to begin tomorrow night, Sunday, October 14, 2018. That night, Monday night, and Wednesday night, expect lane closures and nighttime work on Rugby Avenue, according to a WSSC service bulletin. In case of inclement weather or unexpected problems, the schedule will be moved to the next business day.

Generators, pumps and heavy vehicles and equipment will be employed, increasing noise levels. WSSC says residents nearby should not experience a loss of water service during the work. They might experience discolored water, or air trapped in their pipes. Customers are advised to flush their cold water lines in both cases.

Bethesda construction update: Brightview Bethesda (Photos)

The pace has really picked up at the Brightview Bethesda construction site at 4907 Rugby Avenue. Not only is demolition complete, but the Donohoe Construction team is already on to excavation, sheeting and shoring. We're also getting a temporary clear view of the classic Battery Gardens apartments from Rugby Avenue.

Brightview Bethesda will be for assisted living and memory care residents, with a secure second floor for dementia patients. Floors 3-7 will be assisted living divided into studios, and 1-and-2-bedroom apartment units. Units will have kitchenettes, but 3 meals a day will be served in the building. Activity rooms are also planned for patients.

 

Rugby Avenue demolition update (Photos)

One structure has been demolished to clear the way for the future Brightview Bethesda assisted living apartment building on Rugby Avenue. Still standing is the "Pink House," or "Pepto Bismol House," which most recently was occupied by a maid service called Molly Maid.

Demolition continues at the site of a future mixed-use residential tower on the corner of Rugby and Del Ray Avenues.

Here are some videos and photos of the demolition progress taken on Monday afternoon; this was the site of the old Miller and Long headquarters. You'll notice the workers are hosing down the debris to control dust around the site, as promised.

Bethesda construction update: 2nd District police station (Photos)

What's going on behind the wall at the future site of the new 2nd District Montgomery County Police station at 4823 Rugby Avenue? Mostly grading, and the installation of underground utilities. A pedestrian detour has been created in front of the site to compensate for the sidewalk closure there.

NEW BETHESDA POLICE STATION PROPOSAL (PHOTOS)

The latest proposal for a new 2nd District downtown Bethesda Montgomery County Police station was introduced yesterday by developer StonebridgeCarras. A new 4-story station would be built on the currently empty lot at 4823 Rugby Avenue. In exchange, StonebridgeCarras would be able to redevelop the site of the current aging police station at 7359 Wisconsin Avenue, a prime piece of property near the Bethesda Metro station.

DOWNTOWN BETHESDA " PLUMBING HOUSE " UP FOR LEASE (PHOTOS)

Get yourself a bottle of Liquid Plumbr if you're looking for a plumber at this house. The former headquarters of M.H. Barnes Plumbing and Heating at 4901 Rugby Avenue, vacated less than 3 months ago, is on the market for lease as of yesterday. It is expected to be demolished in a few years for the Brightview Bethesda assisted-living project, but landlord Jaffe Group needs to pay the bills in the meantime.
