Montgomery County legalizes tunnel greenhouses on urban, suburban lots to boost small farming production

Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services has removed a prohibition on the erection of high tunnel greenhouses on urban and suburban lots, in an effort to increase food production by small farmers in those areas. Previously, the structures were only permitted on land zoned as agricultural. Constructed of metal frames and clear plastic coverings, the greenhouses trap heat to extend the growing season, and block access to plants by pests. Interested applicants in urban and suburban areas must submit to the DPS a certificate showing that the high tunnel proposal has been reviewed by the Montgomery Soil Conservation District and the Office of Agriculture, to ensure that it will comply with sediment and erosion control, stormwater management, zoning, and any local HOA requirements.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich

"Ag growers who are Black, indigenous or people of color often operate on properties with fewer than three acres of land, so this policy change was made to increase racial equity," County Executive Marc Elrich said in a statement. "This policy change also is expected to increase local food production, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions from long-distance food transport on our roads and increase urban access to healthy and nutritious food. I thank the local grower who advocated for change and the Office of Agriculture and Department of Permitting Services for implementing the new policy."

FARM BUS COMING TO PIKE CENTRAL FARM MARKET IN NORTH BETHESDA SATURDAY

Ordinarily, I'm telling you about the Bethesda Central Farm Market at Bethesda ES on Sundays.

But this Saturday, from 9 AM to 2 PM, a special bus will be stopping by the Pike Central Farm Market, at Mid Pike Plaza at Rockville Pike and Old Georgetown Road.

Longtime readers know that I believe one of the most underappreciated issues facing America today is, how do we create a new generation of farmers?

One way is to interest children through farm-related toys, like John Deere tractors.  You can buy them locally at Gladhill Bros. John Deere dealership in Damascus.

Gardening is another way, and of course, these days there are even farming video games.

But Saturday, there is yet another way:  the Sol Food Mobile Farm. It is a school bus converted into a rolling demonstration farm.

It's touring the nation this summer to teach kids about agriculture, nutrition, the environment, and all those other hot topics.

The bus even runs on waste vegetable oil, and has a green roof.

In a county where our elected officials don't seem much concerned about the future of farming - Montgomery County has only one Future Farmers of America chapter[!!], at Damascus High School - we in the community need to pick up the slack on this issue that is critical to our economy, national security, health and environment - yes, it really is that important!

So head to the Pike Central Farm Market, and find out what you can do to make a difference.

BETHESDA CENTRAL
FARM MARKET

Farmers Market Rolls Out the Red Carpet for
Patrons at Bethesda ES this Morning

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive!!!

This is Week 3 of Bethesda Central Farm Market's 2012 season at Bethesda Elementary School. Here are a few helpful advisories from BCFM about today's market:

* Please park at Bethesda Library on Arlington Road, or in Public Parking Garage 40 on St. Elmo Avenue, and walk to the market, if you can do so.

* Those who cannot walk, or refuse to, are welcome to park in the Bethesda ES lot. BCFM urges you to drive cautiously, out of concern for children who are attending events inside the school during market hours.

* Starting this morning, those who park at the library or garage WILL NOT HAVE TO CARRY THEIR PURCHASES BACK TO THEIR CAR (unless they wish to!). BCFM is offering a new Valet Bag service. Simply leave your bags at the info tent, walk back to your car, drive to the inner parking area, and valets will bring your bags to the car.

At today's market, Pong's Orchards, Sababa Falafel, Fresh Crunch and Bethesda/Whole Foods favorite Cava make their 2012 debuts at the market.

SPECIAL OF THE WEEK:

From All Things Olive - A bottle of Robbins Family Farm Ascolano, and your choice of Katz Sparkling Wine Vinegar or Red Wine Trio Vinegar. This premium $37 package is yours today for only $30. Quantities limited!

If it's unusual new flavors you're looking for to add a unique twist to old recipes, check out the new, organic Orange Chili Mustard and organic Asparagus Sauce(!!) from Two Acre Farm.

There will be plenty of fresh baked goods and local cheeses for picnics in the parks of downtown Bethesda available at the market.

Dogs are welcome!

Oh, and about those movie stars... No, George Clooney won't be there. But some other movie stars from local farms will!

This Tuesday evening at 9:00 PM on MPT is the premiere of The Maryland Harvest. FARMSTEAD CHEESE
AT
BETHESDA CENTRAL
FARM MARKET

Farmstead cheese is rare in both the U.S. and Europe. But not Sundays at the Bethesda Central Farm Market at the Elm St. parking lot from 9 AM to 12:30 PM.

What is "farmstead cheese?" It is cheese made on the same farm where the livestock that produced it graze. Stonyman Gourmet Farmer is selling farmstead cheese every week at the market, so you can try this rare cheese for yourself.

Stonyman has another Bethesda connection: they designed a cheese plate for Food Wine & Co. on Wisconsin Avenue.

So stop by Stonyman at the market; their mission in life is to help you create the perfect cheese plate for you, while fostering local and sustainable dairy production.
