Kenwood Club fireworks 2024 + other Bethesda-Chevy Chase-area fireworks display dates

We're just days away from the best fireworks display in the Washington, D.C. area, the one put on by the Kenwood Golf and Country Club at 5601 River Road in Bethesda. The club and its property are private, so don't trespass on their property. But the fireworks can be seen from nearby church and retail parking lots such as the Fourth Presbyterian Church, which has been the most-popular viewing spot in past years, as it is directly across the street. If you are lucky enough to have a backyard in line-of-sight to the club, or an apartment or condo facing the club's direction, it's also a chance to play Jay Gatsby and have a spectacular fireworks display to cap off your Independence Day party.

This year's Kenwood fireworks are scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, 2024. Expect the show to start sometime between 9:15 and 9:30 PM. The fireworks will be very loud, so you may want to consider having hearing protection like earplugs on hand. If you are in the vicinity and have a dog, make sure the animal is indoors before the show starts. Should inclement weather occur, Kenwood has scheduled a rain date for July 3, 2024.

Here are the scheduled dates for other fireworks displays in the Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Potomac area, whether you wish to view them from public property or your own home, or want to be prepared for the noise. Print out this article and stick it to the refrigerator if you want to be prepared in advance, or just want to know exactly where those booms are coming from on any given night:

June 30 - 9:00 PM: Bethesda Country Club (rain date: July 1)

July 2 - 9:00 PM: Columbia Country Club (rain date: July 3)

July 3 - 9:30 PM: Chevy Chase Club (rain date: September 2)

July 4 - 9:30 PM: Congressional Country Club (rain date: July 5)

Kenwood Club fireworks 2022 - the DC area's best fireworks are in Bethesda!

The best fireworks display in the D.C. area will once again be presented by the Kenwood Golf and Country Club in Bethesda (although the club is technically in Chevy Chase). This year's Kenwood fireworks will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2022; rain date is July 1. The event at the private club is for members only, so do not trespass on club property. However, the fireworks are visible some distance around the club, and usually begin after 9:00 PM.

Nearby residents - and those nearby or in downtown Bethesda lucky enough to have apartment balconies facing the club - know the drill by now: Plan a backyard party modest or grand, and then gain the cachet of The Great Gatsby himself when an expensive fireworks display suddenly erupts in the sky above, and caps off the evening.

Savvy Bethesdans (a.k.a. readers of this blog) who aren't part of the landed class can still partake of the fireworks - if they know where to go. The smart spot is in the church parking lot across River Road from the club, where those-in-the-know converge on foot or by car. Earplugs are strongly recommended for children, or those with sensitive ears.

I haven't bothered to go into D.C. or out to Rockville for fireworks since Kenwood began their fireworks displays over a decade ago. The Kenwood display is superior, and gets better each year, and it certainly did again in 2022.

Impress your friends, avoid getting your pocket picked or purse snatched on the National Mall, and take in the best fireworks in the D.C. area. Gracious toast and "I'm Gatsby" line are optional.

Kenwood fireworks 2020 canceled

The DC area's best fireworks display is usually in Bethesda. But not this year. The Kenwood Golf and Country Club's annual fireworks extravaganza had been scheduled for tonight, July 1, 2020, at 9:30 PM. I've confirmed with the club that the display has been canceled, due to the coronavirus restrictions.

Montgomery County and many other organizations have canceled their public fireworks displays this year for that very reason. Now it appears virtually all private organizations have, as well.

Kenwood Club fireworks 2016 this Thursday night

via GIPHY
The best fireworks display in the D.C. area will once again be held by the Kenwood Golf and Country Club on River Road in Bethesda tomorrow night, Thursday, June 30, 2016 after dark (usually around 9:15 PM or thereafter, but it wouldn't hurt to be ready as early as 8:45, even though they've never gone off that soon). As always, the club and the event are private and not open to the general public. But for those who live nearby or in a high-rise facing the club's direction, or who scout out a nearby parking lot, one can still enjoy the spectacle for free.

Smart residents know the drill: Plan a backyard party modest or grand, and then gain the cachet of The Great Gatsby himself when an expensive fireworks display suddenly erupts in the sky above, and caps off the evening.

Kenwood fireworks set for July 2, 2015, plus dates for other Bethesda/Chevy Chase-area country club fireworks

Get ready for the area's best fireworks display on July 2. Not on the Mall downtown, not in Rockville or Gaithersburg. No, it's right here in Bethesda, at the private Kenwood Golf and Country Club on River Road.

Of course, you won't be able to get on the club property July 2 if you aren't a member.

But that doesn't stop residents in nearby homes, or in apartment buildings as far away as downtown Bethesda, from taking in the show from their backyards and balconies. Many have been known to plan Independence Day parties around the display, and pretend that they actually are the Great Gatsby.

What if you're not a resident? The fireworks can be viewed (and heard extremely clearly - you may want earplugs for small children) from nearby church and shopping center parking lots, with the most popular being the church directly across River Road from the club.

Why be a sardine on Metro, and a pickpocket victim in the District (or maybe get your pocket picked by a DC traffic camera), when you can get a better fireworks show right here in Bethesda?

Other clubs may not stack up to the Kenwood display, but here are those with announced dates so far:

Columbia Country Club June 30

KENWOOD FIREWORKS 2013 - THE DC AREA'S BEST FIREWORKS ARE IN BETHESDA!

When are the Kenwood Club fireworks this year?

I've just received word that the DC area's best fireworks will be on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 this year. The display will begin between 9:30-9:45 PM.

The Kenwood Golf & Country Club, on River Road, is a private club, and the festivities are not open to the public.

So why do non-members want to know when the fireworks are?

Because residents of nearby neighborhoods, and apartments that face the club, have made something of a tradition out of the fireworks.

It's possible to throw a big party, with hot dogs, etc., and then enjoy the club's fireworks from your balcony or backyard, as if it was your own private show. And all of your guests will think you're the Great Gatsby.

What if you're not part of the landed class near the club?

People often park at one of the nearby churches or commercial parking lots on River Road. The sure spot is at the church directly across from the club entrance. Be forewarned, the display will be loud, as you might expect.

Downtown Bethesda? Some people have been able to enjoy the fireworks from higher floors of buildings facing that direction.

I do not recommend inviting people to a party unless you know you'll actually be able to see the fireworks from the location in question. You want to be the Great Gatsby, not the Great Pumpkin.

The trajectory of fireworks can change slightly from year to year. From downtown Bethesda, in general, if you are standing at the corner of Arlington Road and Bethesda Avenue, with your back to Urban Country,  the fireworks should be in the general direction of EuroMotorcars and the Bradley Shopping Center. That's the general direction, but it pays to be on a higher floor rather than street level. Caveat emptor.

Kenwood's fireworks became a huge deal last year, when they fell on the actual July 4 holiday, and the county canceled all public fireworks displays after the derecho storm.

But the Kenwood fireworks beat any I've seen in the DC area, any year.
