Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams solar eclipse flavors now in view at Bethesda Row

The total solar eclipse scheduled to occur on April 8, 2024 has inspired an entire line of limited-time flavors now available at Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at 4918 Elm Street at Bethesda Row. Cosmic Bloom, Nebula Berry, Purple Star Born, and Supermoon are fantasy flavors based on fruits that may or may not exist on other worlds in our universe. Gooey Butter Cake somehow squeezed its way into the cosmic conversation, as well.

Top off your space mission with limited-time topping Space Dust. And for safety's sake, make sure to wear your official Jeni's eclipse viewing glasses, available free with purchase of any of the Punk Stargonaut eclipse flavors beginning April 5 - while supplies last!

Soft shell crab season begins at The Salt Line at Bethesda Row

The signs of spring's arrival aren't limited to Easter eggs and the start of baseball season - it's also the return of soft shell crabs at The Salt Line, located at 7284 Woodmont Avenue at Bethesda Row. Considering many people's pre-Bethesda experience of The Salt Line came before or after a Washington Nationals game at their southeast Washington location, the timing is certainly right to visit their Bethesda Row outpost. There you will find the newest dish on their menu, Nashville Hot Soft Shell Crab, which is now available at all Salt Line locations.

A Nashville Hot Soft Shell Crab features a soft shell crab sourced from Georgia fried in buttermilk, topped with a spicy house-made hot sauce, and served atop griddled white bread with pickled green tomatoes and black garlic-infused honey. Of course, you could ask them to hold the hot sauce or put it on the side, if you are heat-averse. The restaurant says it will switch to Maryland blue crabs as soon as they are available.

Alleged Ledo Pizza burglar arrested in Bethesda

Ledo's doesn't cut corners, and neither did Montgomery County police officers, in apprehending a suspect they say burglarized one of the local pizzeria chain's Bethesda locations on March 22, 2024. The suspect allegedly entered the Ledo Pizza at 10301 Westlake Drive "in the early morning hours" of that day.

Officers arriving at the scene found no evidence of forced entry, nor any indication that anything had been stolen from inside the restaurant. However, they also found a suspect, whom they took into custody. Ucchi Nkemdrika, 23, of no fixed address, has been charged with 4th-degree burglary.

Chili's boarded up in White Flint

For the disciplined secret government team in charge of preventing all-American casual restaurant chains from opening in Montgomery County - or pushing them out if they're already here - the mission has its ups and downs. For every Olive Garden or Cracker Barrel blocked from leasing a pad site, for every abandoned bank on River Road that mysteriously can't become a drive-thru Chick-fil-A or Taco Bell cash cow, for every Ruby Tuesday or P.F. Chang's that closes its doors forever, there's a Cheesecake Factory that just keeps chugging along, or a new Outback Steakhouse set to open just when you'd finished smiling about the one in Germantown closing. But, if they take a break from crafting new anti-business legislation or arcane zoning blockades, here's a scene they can enjoy at 11428 Rockville Pike: the Chili's that closed in 2016 has just been boarded up.

Chili's successfully operated this location for 25 years. Let's take a moment to remember the many business deals closed over two Spicy Sauza Jalapeño Margarita lunches, the Gap-dress-code happy hours, and the romantic date night window views of Fitz Auto Mall and gas stations. Even Mike Pence enjoys dining at Chili's. You can't, because there are no more Chili's in Montgomery County, one more ubiquitous brand stunned visitors will incredulously remind you is in every other jurisdiction in America but here.

"Let's go to Olive Garden."

"There is no Olive Garden."

"Whaaaaaaaat??????? You're joking, right? OK, what about Cracker Barrel?"

Bethesda cemetery protest scheduled for Wednesday, March 27

Tower crane at self-storage construction site
visible behind Mcdonald's on River Road

The Bethesda African Cemetery Coalition has scheduled a protest for Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 4:00 PM next to 5214 River Road in Bethesda. BACC leaders blame the developer of a self-storage project adjacent to the Moses African Cemetery for flooding a large area of the burial ground since January. They say a drainage pipe has been positioned to direct floodwater from the self-storage excavation site onto the graveyard, which was first desecrated during construction of the Westwood Tower apartments in the late 1960s. Montgomery County police would not allow BACC to file a police report about the flooding, they reported in a statement. They have also accused Maryland Congressman David Trone (D), who made a racial slur during a congressional hearing Thursday, of previously declaring "Who cares about that little cemetery?" when approached by BACC President Marcia Coleman Adebayo to seek his assistance.

Ficker: David Trone's racial slur shows word was "on the tip of his tongue"

Maryland U.S. Senate candidate
David Trone (D)

Maryland U.S. Senate candidate David Trone (D), in his current role as representative for the state's 6th Congressional District, used a racial slur when speaking to a Black woman during a committee hearing on Thursday. Trone later issued a statement apologizing for using the word, claiming he had meant to use the term "bugaboo" instead. "That word has a long, dark, terrible history," Trone said of the slur in his statement. "It should never be used any time, anywhere, in any conversation." While Trone characterized his language as a mere gaffe, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Robin Ficker suggested it was more of a Freudian slip.

“I am appalled by David Trone’s use of this vile word, especially when addressing a black woman," Ficker said in a statement Friday. "That terrible word does not simply slip out of someone’s mouth unless it is constantly on the tip of their tongue. Trone’s attempt to pass this off as a harmless mistake is an affront to the voters’ intelligence."

Trone's unforced error couldn't have come at a worse time. Days earlier, a poll showed that former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) was far ahead of Trone and Democratic rival Angela Alsobrooks in the contest for outgoing U.S. Senator Ben Cardin's seat. The poll also showed that despite months of relentless, unskippable YouTube ads, Trone is not a a familiar name to most registered voters statewide.

Yet, the poll had only underlined the fact that the Democratic National Committee badly needs Trone and his personal wealth to defeat Hogan this fall. The entry into the race by popular former governor Hogan, who still enjoys bipartisan support and goodwill, means Republican donations and dark money will be pouring into a state that now represents a flippable seat in the Senate. But by the end of the week, Trone had wounded himself badly with his out-of-left-field use of a racial slur.

Trone now finds himself in a similar predicament as two of his Democratic colleagues in Virginia, as well as former Virginia Gov. George Allen (R). In 2019, then-Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) and then-Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring (D) were revealed to have worn blackface as adults. Northam was also accused of being one of two men in a yearbook photograph, whose identities were hidden by Ku Klux Klan robes and blackface. Northam initially admitted he was one of the two men in the photo, without identifying which one, but later retracted his confession.

Allen used a racial slur when addressing a tracker from a rival campaign who was videotaping him at a campaign event in 2006. Despite yeoman's work by The Washington Post to revive Northam and Herring's prospects - and Northam's bizarre framing of collective penance by the state for his personal racist acts - Virginia voters had the last word, firing Herring during the 2021 election. The political careers of all three Virginians were ended by the episodes. But they gave voters a window into the world of politicians who profess one thing in daylight, but hold contrasting mores and values privately.

Those lessons show the real political hot water Trone is now in. The woman he was addressing when a racial slur came to his mind was Black. His leading Democratic primary opponent is Black. And Maryland is one of the American states where Black voters have decisive power. No one can win a statewide election here if they are strongly opposed by African-American voters.

Hogan has not yet issued a public statement on Trone's use of the slur. Ficker, in his statement, recapped his political record on civil rights, including his participation in the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. "Aside from marching with Dr. [Martin Luther] King, last year, I was asked to be on the hospitality committee for the 60th Reunion of the March led by Martin Luther King, III," Ficker recounted. "In 1976, I was appointed by Rosa Parks to be the first general counsel for the National Caucus on Black Aging."

"Unlike Congressman Trone, I have a track record of supporting the black community, instead of just giving them lip service," Ficker said. "I’m incredibly proud of my work to advance racial equality, and I will always be a friend to the Black community in the Senate.”

Gramcarat "coming soon" in Bethesda

Gramcarat
, a jewelry store, is taking over part of the vacant Modell's space at 7201 Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda. There is now permanent signage on the storefront glass, and temporary "coming soon" signage in the windows.

Gramcarat has been a vendor at the Montgomery Farm Women's Market in Bethesda, and is now expanding into its own permanent bricks-and-mortar location. The family-owned business offers 14kt & 18kt gold pieces, natural diamonds, and gemstones. Gramcarat also provides watch and jewelry repair services. This confirms that the big Modell's space is now going to be subdivided into smaller storefronts, so more tenants could be coming soon - hopefully including additional fast-casual restaurants.

Assault at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Montgomery County police responded to a report of a 2nd-degree assault at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda yesterday afternoon, March 21, 2024. The assault was reported at the mall at 3:06 PM Thursday. This is the third assault committed at the mall this year. Like the first two in 2024, yesterday's assault was related to a shoplifting incident at a store in the mall.

The mall is currently on a pace to equal the number of assaults reported at the popular retail center in 2022, which was 12. That would be more than double the total assault reports at the mall last year, when only 5 such incidents were reported. Last year's drop in violent crime at the property came after Montgomery County police established a "resource room" inside the mall.

New Bethesda rat-resistant trash can operation (Video)

Here's a look at how the new rat-resistant trash cans beginning to appear in downtown Bethesda operate. You can grab the handle to pull it open, or you can step on the pedal for hands-free operation. The cans eliminate the open top access that rodents can take advantage of. And, as I mentioned in my earlier report, the tougher material prevents rats from gnawing their way in from underneath the can, which has also been an issue with the existing trash receptacles.

Montgomery County police to conduct saturation patrols all St. Patrick's Day weekend

Montgomery County police will be conducting saturation patrols across the jurisdiction this weekend, in an attempt to deter and catch drunk drivers. Almost 50% of traffic-related deaths on St. Patrick's Day weekend historically have been caused by people driving while intoxicated, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Deployment of the full Alcohol Initiatives Unit, and overtime pay for the extra officers on the streets this weekend, are being partially-funded by grants from the Maryland Highway Safety Office. Joining County officers on patrol this weekend will be cruisers from the Maryland State Police - Rockville Barrack N, the Maryland Transportation Authority police, the County’s Sheriff’s Department, and the Maryland-National Capital Park police.

“If you plan to drink, do not drive,” Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones said in a statement. “Our officers will be conducting saturation patrols throughout the County and arresting intoxicated drivers. The tragedy that occurs when people get behind the wheel intoxicated is 100 percent preventable.”

County officials are urging those who plan to drink, and do not already have a plan to safely return home, to utilize the SoberRide program. The free ride-home program is offered through the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) in partnership with Lyft. Promotional codes for Lyft will be posted online at 11:00 AM on Sunday, March 17, on SoberRide.com. The codes are valid for up to $15-off on one ride home taken in Lyft’s Washington, D.C., coverage area from noon on Sunday, March 17, until midnight on Monday, March 18. The number of codes is limited, and participants must be 21 or older. Officials also suggest using the County's Ride On bus service.

“There are ample ride services that will get you home safety,” County Department of Transportation Director Chris Conklin said. “If you are choosing to celebrate with alcohol this St. Patrick’s Day, plan out your ride home ahead of time to keep our shared roadways safe for everyone.”
