BRADLEY PARTY & VARIETY OPENS IN BETHESDA (PHOTOS)

Bradley Party & Variety had its long-awaited opening yesterday, in the legendary Bruce Variety space at Bradley Shopping Center.

The revamped interior - by the Bethesda architectural firm of Bruce Lawson - retains a retro atmosphere, but is brighter and more colorful and spacious. Most notably, exposed hardwood floors play an integral part in the design.

New automatic front doors are a nice touch, as well as being practical when carrying large shopping bags out to the car.

Bradley Party & Variety's hours are:

Monday-Friday 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Saturday 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Sunday 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Regular readers will recognize the new BP&V logo, chosen in a design contest sponsored by the owners, which I gave you an exclusive preview of months ago.

Now the competition begins in earnest. With the original Bruce Variety open at 8011 Woodmont Avenue, both stores will compete for your business.

Feel free to post your opinions in the comments below. Have you visited both stores? Which one comes out on top for interior design, prices, customer service, and inventory? Or is it a draw?

HOW MANY INCHES OF SNOW WILL BETHESDA, DC AREA GET FROM WINTER STORM SATURN?

Bethesda is under a Winter Storm Watch right now. The sun is shining, but there's a wintry chill in the air.

Winter Storm Saturn is on its way to the DC area.

How many inches of snow will end up falling on Bethesda tonight and on Wednesday?

The average prediction is 5-6 inches. Some forecasters say it could be as many as 8-12.

But here's an intriguing prediction: the now-famous Euro Model is saying the DC area will receive a 1-3" accumulation. This contradicts the majority of forecasts. Yet it is intriguing because the Euro Model was dead-right about the hurricane last fall.

The fact is, nobody knows. But conditions are right for up to a foot of snow.  And it is supposed to be a wet, heavy snow. That means more effort to shovel and plow for humans and machines.

Even though the Euro Model sounds unlikely, you can't rule out the data from a model that has been accurate so many times.

The fact that temperatures will rise above freezing on Wednesday could certainly reduce the potential total accumulation.

But that ice and slush will freeze solid after dark again, so watch out.

Today, expect light showers by 5:00 PM, changing over to snow after dark.  Accumulation of 1-2" possible tonight. Winds gusting to 30 MPH.

Wednesday, heavy showers and heavy snow. Accumulation of 5-12" possible through Thursday morning. Winds will gust to 35 MPH. Visibility could be affected if snowfall is heavy, due to winds.

Metro and Metrobus are total wildcards in recent years, in contrast to their past practice of operation during all but the worst snows in prior decades.

Stay tuned here and at @BethesdaRow on Twitter for updates throughout the storm!

BLASTING REQUIRED AT 4500 EAST-WEST HIGHWAY SITE, W LANE OF PEARL ST. TO CLOSE MARCH 12

The office building project at the former Bethesda McDonald's site (4500 East-West Highway) is about to get complicated.

If you work in one of the many office buildings nearby, or live in the Topaz House or Riviera and are at home during daytime hours, it's also going to get loud.

Workers excavating at the south end of the site have struck a layer of solid rock. An engineering study has clarified that blasting is necessary to continue excavation.

Blasting will begin in the coming weeks. If you live around Bethesda Row, you know the drill.

If not, here is the signal code explosive technicians will use during blasting at this site:

° Long horn blast warning, 5 minutes before detonation

° 3 short horn signal immediately before detonation

° "All Clear" long horn blast after explosion

Isn't that going to be fun?

The other big news, is that the western lane of Pearl Street will close "on or around" Tuesday, March 12, 2013.  Pearl Street, as I reported a few weeks ago, will become a southbound-only, one-way street for the duration of the building construction.

That western lane of Pearl will be sealed off with jersey barriers. And driver information signage will be placed along East-West Highway and Montgomery Avenue.

Support pile installation is now complete, and excavation will continue concurrent with blasting operations.

BRUCE VARIETY ANNOUNCES NEW BETHESDA LOCATION OPENING MARCH 2013

Bruce Variety has announced it will reopen in a new Bethesda location in March 2013.  The new store will be at 8011 Woodmont Avenue, as I reported exclusively here days ago. The owners have now confirmed that my 2 sources for the then-unannounced real estate decision were correct.

8011 Woodmont Avenue is the former home of Creative Parties, LTD, which recently relocated to the Landow Building nearby.

The store, a home-like structure left from an earlier Bethesda era, will be revamped to fit the needs of Bruce Variety. While it appears smaller than Bruce's original location, there is actually a bit more room than is obvious from the street.

There is an on-site, surface parking lot, including disabled parking, next to the new building.

The location is not as ideal as the Bradley Shopping Center, and lacks the same number of parking spaces. But the move has to please residents of nearby buildings like Triangle Towers, Fairmont Plaza and The Palisades, who 3 weeks ago, could never have imagined they would be neighbors to the legendary Bruce Variety.

Bruce Variety to the Woodmont Triangle in Old Town Bethesda - it's official!

WHERE IS SANDY? WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY AFTER THE SUPERSTORM - POTOMAC RIVER FLOODING, AIRPORT OPENINGS AND CLOSINGS, AMTRAK

BETHESDA STORM CENTER

SANDY UPDATE

Bethesda may have dodged a bullet, but flooding remains a serious issue here and throughout the DC area today.  At 3 AM, the Potomac River was only 4" away from flood stage at Little Falls.  It is expected to reach and surpass flood stage within hours.  Then it is expected to recede into Thursday.  Potomac flooding also means creek flooding, so continue to drive with caution near waterways like Little Falls Stream, Booze Creek, etc.

WHERE IS SANDY?

Superstorm Sandy is currently near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at this hour.  It will continue northward, and its cloud mass currently stretches from the Great Lakes to New England.  Sandy continues to dump snow to its southwest, with one Western Maryland town having 29" so far.

BETHESDA FORECAST

Mostly cloudy today, with highs in the mid-50s.  Breeze SW, 10-15 MPH.

TRANSIT, TRAVEL, TRAINS, AIRPORTS

Reagan National, Dulles and BWI airports are open.

Newark Liberty and JFK Airports in New York opened at 7 AM this morning.  Call your airline to confirm your flight before leaving home.

Amtrak service has resumed between DC and Philadelphia, but not to New York.  Amtrak is operating south of DC, but not to Chicago.  Again, call ahead, as this could change at any time.

Vamoose Bus has resumed service to New York City from Waverly Street in downtown Bethesda.

Metro subway, Metrobus, Ride On, MARC, MTA bus, Maryland commuter buses, and MTA light rail and subway are all operating this morning.

ETC.

Little Falls Parkway has reopened.

Early voting in Maryland: 8 AM - 9 PM today.

Stay tuned for more, and make sure to follow me on Twitter at @BethesdaRow for all the latest Sandy coverage!

WHY THE PANIC? WOODMONT AVE. CLOSURE DELAYED UNTIL FRIDAY - BETHESDA ROW CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

The TV stations are hyping the closure of part of Woodmont Avenue as an end-of-summer Apocalypse.  But even worse, they got the date wrong.

Many outlets are reporting that Woodmont Avenue between Bethesda and Miller Avenues will close today.  But last Friday, Ken Hartman of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Services Center said the closure would actually be September 7, which is this Friday.  Hartman is "The Man" when it comes to county government-related actions in downtown Bethesda -  if he doesn't know about it, it's not likely to be happening.  Since the county is a partner in the subterranean public parking garage that will be built during the street closure, Hartman's schedule is as close to official as it gets.

Plus, I was around that intersection last night, and nothing was in place for a closure.  Now, maybe some hard hat guy will blow a whistle, and run across Woodmont with a roll of police tape during rush hour.  But barring some rush job like that, I think it's safe to say it's not closing today.

Beyond that, the effects of the closure are being blown out of proportion.  The worst thing - closure of Lot 31 and 31A - has already happened.  Compared to Parkmageddon, the Woodmont closure is going to have far less impact on Bethesda Row businesses.  It's also not going to affect traffic on the Beltway or around the county, although you might think otherwise from the hype we're hearing.

There are three main impacts that are worth monitoring during the closure.  First, it is certainly going to slow traffic around the "block" of Bethesda Row.  But then, traffic already is slow around Bethesda Row.  The difference is that people used to "split the difference" when heading to 355:  some used Bethesda Avenue, and some used Woodmont.  Now 100% of those drivers are going to use Bethesda.  Combined with the impact of that on the already-frustrating Barnes and Noble intersection, that is going to lengthen travel times around the Row.

Second, the impact on Wisconsin Avenue will be that same issue; there could be backups during rush hours at the Bethesda-Wisconsin intersection.  Whether that slows traffic flow along 355 is going to be interesting (can it get any slower?  It's faster to walk during rush hour).  Conversely, no one will be making a left turn onto Woodmont from westbound Bethesda Avenue.

Third, there is a minor public safety issue, in that firetrucks answering calls will have to take an additional 10-20 seconds to turn down Bethesda Avenue, rather than using Woodmont.  They will also have to pause for oncoming traffic at one additional intersection of 355.  I'm sure these sorts of things have been coordinated with public safety officials in advance.

So, delays won't be surprising, but this is not going to be the end of the world.  The main thing is, with the closure being later this week, everyone will have a few days to readjust to the post-summer traffic congestion, before this monkey wrench hits the works.

Frankly, closing Woodmont for 2 years is one of the craziest ideas I've ever heard of.  But as they say in business school, "It is what it is."
