Freshbikes reopens in Bethesda after flood (Photos)

Freshbikes has reopened its store at 7626 Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda. The store was closed for almost two months after a massive pipe burst in their building and flooded them out of the shop.

The store has placed an outdoor display on the sidewalk to help passersby notice that they are indeed open again.

Bethesda Metro station reopens (Photos)

The Bethesda Metro station has just reopened, after a comedy of errors that began when a power surge knocked out escalator service at the station this afternoon. Initially, Metro had reported the escalator was being fixed, and that the station would reopen around 5:40 PM. That ultimately did not happen, leading to a Twitter apology from WMATA.

As rush hour wound down tonight, shuttles were still running between Friendship Heights and Medical Center. But signage only referred to the Medical Center shuttle, which appeared to confuse some stranded commuters. That free shuttle service is now canceled with the station reopening, Metro said.

The snafus were good business for the Dunkin' Donuts at the Metro Center, however, which was open until 9:00.

MOMO CHICKEN AND JAZZ SOFT OPENING TODAY IN BETHESDA

MOMO Chicken and Jazz is scheduled to have its soft opening today on Cordell Avenue. However, the Korean fried chicken restaurant had a soft-soft opening last night, as an employee was spotted placing the "OPEN" sign into position.Which was then lit. Now we'll find out how it compares to BonChon...

LILLY PULITZER OPENS AT WESTFIELD MONTGOMERY MALL IN BETHESDA (PHOTOS)

Shopping just got twice as nice for Lilly Pulitzer fans in Bethesda. The existing Pink Palm boutique at Bethesda Row is now joined by a Lilly Pulitzer store, which has just opened at Westfield Montgomery Mall. They also have a display in the center of the corridor outside of the store.

In other Westfield Montgomery Mall news, frantic construction is underway inside the future Talbot's, which is moving over from White Flint Mall. I could hear loud machinery operating behind the wall.

The Walking Company has moved into, and opened, its new second level location. Speaking of moving, Crabtree & Evelyn is about to open its second level store, as well. Yesterday, workers were making the move, clearing out the current store on the lower level.

EASTHAM'S SERVICENTER INSTALLS SIGN AT NEW BETHESDA LOCATION (PHOTOS)

Eastham's Servicenter (now apparently renamed Eastham's Auto Service Center, in a victory for spellcheck and Autocorrect programs everywhere) is ready to go at its new home, at the corner of Fairmont Avenue and Old Georgetown Road. The historic downtown Bethesda institution will offer its auto repair services, but won't sell gas. They moved from their longtime Wisconsin Avenue location after the landowner sold the property to developers, who plan a high-rise residential building that is scheduled to break ground later this year. This location is also temporary, with a 17-story residential building planned for this site, as well.

A third downtown Bethesda Dunkin' Donuts opened Saturday, in the Norfolk-Cordell II building at Norfolk and Cordell Avenues. This store also includes a Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlor. One of the 3 existing Dunkin' Donuts shops, the original Bethesda Row location, is expected to close this summer. Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins is the last of the initial tenants of the Steven Karr-designed building to open.

The sign was lit last night at the new Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins on Cordell Avenue. I've received word that the store hopes to open Friday, if all goes according to plan. It is located in the Norfolk-Cordell II building, around the corner from Smashburger.

HECKMAN'S DELICATESSEN TO OPEN IN BETHESDA (PHOTOS)

A second new delicatessen is coming to the Woodmont Triangle neighborhood of downtown Bethesda. Heckman's Delicatessen is opening in the former Maggie's space at 4914 Cordell Avenue.

As you can see in these photos, the interior has already gotten a makeover. Workers were busy Wednesday, as construction continues. A retro checkerboard tile floor is matched with a contemporary counter design.

Many residents have sought a "real" deli in downtown Bethesda, with everyone having their own definition of what that means. Others have their own favorites among the existing delis. Heckman's won't be the only one in town, but many have come and gone in recent years. Now Bethesda will have another contender in the market.

But Heckman's will have an equally-new competitor of its own just blocks away. Aria Beer Wine and Deli is currently under construction in the ground floor of the new Gallery Bethesda luxury apartment tower, located at 4800 Auburn Avenue. Heckman's also plans to sell alcohol in its deli. And Red Bull.
