Montgomery County police responded to a report of an armed carjacking in downtown Bethesda this past Sunday afternoon, February 19, 2023. The broad-daylight carjacking was reported in the 4800 block of Fairmont Avenue at 3:40 PM. 7-Eleven and the Fairmont Plaza condominium building are located along that block.
An elderly man was assaulted and carjacked two days later on Chevy Chase Drive. Police have now confirmed the man suffered minor injuries in the attack, in which his 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee was stolen.

Defund, demoralize the police coupled with clueless leadership is not a good recipe here. Don't think so? It's so bad that MoCo police are offering a 20k bonus to join the force. Ron Desantis in FL is smart. He's attracting good law enforcement personnel from failed places like NYC and here in our area with a 50K bonus. Which would you take? Oh, and the MD state legislature (one party, Dem controlled) is going to pass statewide restrictions on concealed carry so strict that your permit to carry will be rendered useless. Quick recap: Not enough police and no way to carry (and Comrade Elrich has seen to that already in MoCo) if you choose in order to protect life and property. Nice.
Why it is necessary to say "broad daylight" if you've already said, "afternoon"?
Unless that term means it wasn't raining or overcast. . . .
At this point, even commenting on here is no longer therapeutic...
Doing anything illegal while armed should be extra special super punished. The same folks decrying rampant crime are against any sensible extra special super punishments for gun law violations. Do we need more armed carjackings or more armed shootouts in the middle of downtown Bethesda? We could limit both by passing sensible extra special super punishing gun laws. Something like, you get caught selling an illegal gun, you can't run for public office.
2nd offense, you can't vote. 3rd offense, you can't use the internet. Forever. Those are real sensible extra special super punishments that will deter crime. There are probably better.
@9:24 AM: People who legally carry legal guns with a MD Wear & Carry Permit aren't the ones committing these crimes. The people committing these crimes are carrying illegally, and they don't give a damn about these gun laws you're putting on a pedestal.
You do know the difference between legal permitted carry and illegal carry, right?
Bill 21-22, which was intentionally designed by the all-Democrat County Council to make it illegal for permitted carriers to carry within 100 yards of places of public assembly in MoCo (effectively a blanket ban), actually endangers the community because it's something that criminals who already illegally carry illegal guns in MoCo have no intention of following. Legal/Permitted gun carriers will obey the law, leave their guns at home, and now become victims as a result.
Unfortunately, I think this uptick in crime in Bethesda over the past few months is only the beginning. The Purple Line is going to deliver offenders benefiting from increasingly lax criminal codes in DC and neighboring counties.
More gun laws do nothing. Why? Because bad guys don't follow them or any other law. When will folks ever understand that? More laws only hurt the law abiders not the crooks.
@7:41 AM: Spot on here.
They don't have this problem in the 24 Constitutional Carry States. Low crime, friendly people.
The problem with 9:24 is the "hope" that more laws equal less crime while the democrats they voted for have no intention whatsoever to enforce laws that are already on the books. One of these days, (hope springs eternal), you may open your eyes to exactly what's going on and realize that more laws only affect those who obey them.
The problem is that I have a name. It is Shanel. Some folks call me shoe nail for obvious reasons.
Laws only affect those who accept them as fair. That __th paragraph of our founding American documentssays we shall chose to buy insurance to protect us against theft rather than blame the poor folks for stealing. They have enough problems.
Our DOI and Constitution do not say any such thing? I think that they do. We can help keep our America great by not ignoring our past. I think that we've come a long way, baby.
Democrats not wanting to enforce existing laws. Don't Republicans still enforce laws in MoCo?
9:24 I'm pretty sure 9:24 is being sarcastic. At least it's damn funny. Unlike the situation in Bethesda where the peace loving dope smoking Leftists of Yesteryear think everything is A-OK. Note: Summer is coming, along with more crime.
It is such a mess!
So laws only affect those who accept them as fair? This is a lack of understanding to how things work. Don't like the law? Work to get it changed. That's actually how the system works. Kim Gardner in Missouri, who has blood on her hands, just got fired for cause by following your premise of acceptability.
You should actually read the Constitution instead of digesting the leftist madlib version.
A gun is nothing more than a tool, much like a knife, hammer or even a car. They don't kill on their own but in the hands of a determined lawbreaker, (defined by someone who breaks THE LAW acceptable or not to them).
11:52 AM - The Purple Line will not stop anywhere in the District of Columbia, or even close to it. But your dog-whistle is noted.
We have a Police Station right here in Bethesda but it’s too much to expect one police car to ride up and down Wisconsin Ave at least every 20 to 30 min at 2 or 3AM ??????? Criminals see there’s no cops and they go right in to their routine. Why not ?????
@2:48 PM: Republicans don't hold any elected office in MoCo, although there may be some on the MoCo Police Force.
Hey 2:48, there are ZERO republicans in power in MC but I guess democrats need someone else to blame for their own insanity, (doing the same thing over and over expecting different results).
It doesn't have to, it just has to come from SS/TP/PGC.
I know know two non liberal mc police, they both moved to Florida! They have the requisite respect for the Law and OUR Constitution!
@3:51 AM That "F" in Florida stands for only one adverb, not printable here. Have at it.
5:28 still believes that one group that makes up 15% of population commits 90% of violent crime
WLM
If there are, I feel sorry for them having to protect us from the company we choose to invite. Eventually they'll all be mollycoddling mushheads like the great bulk of the county constituency. Maybe we'll have to resort to extreme measures like in Memphis and Birmingham just to get uniforms out there.
It's gonna be a long, dangerous summer if the po-po don't get ahead of this crime problem. It's gonna get worse, almost exponentially, as Bethesda gets more 'inviting.'
And our cops mostly have adopted DC's lazy way of announcing their presence with blue lights on their stealthy and expensive light bars. The thugs wait or move up the street.
What a joke!
2:26 has no argument so the retort is the full extent of their capability. Meanwhile, in the real world where actions have consequences, most sane people can see that many people are voting with their feet.
That's not basically true?
You are correct 1:09. I moved from Bethesda to Miami and life is so much better down here. The leftist main stream media is going full tilt in their efforts to smear DeSantis by misrepresenting his legislative achievements but he is going to be the next president.
@2:26 PM: Last I checked, Florida is not a verb. Adverbs don't modify nouns.
