Bethesda construction update: Cheltenham apartments (Photos)

Construction is advancing quickly at the site of the Cheltenham apartments at 4725 Cheltenham Drive in downtown Bethesda. Work only began in September, and the building is already one story above street level. Of course, much time was saved by the ommision of underground parking. The first story also appears shorter in height than most other buildings, where the ground floor tends to be the tallest, to allow for the higher ceilings of the lobby and retail spaces.

That CVS is convenient with parking and the only drive thru pharmacy in the immediate area but their days have to be numbered. That entire side of Wisconsin Ave will be blown up sooner than later. If they do hang on, it'll be crazy busy.

Crocodile tears.

No retail on the ground level means a lower floor height. Just a small lobby and apartment units keeps the height down.

A large apartment building (110 units was what we've been told) with no parking is unacceptable. The current developer told the neighborhood association that THEY DON'T EXPECT ANY RENTERS TO HAVE A CAR. Are you effing kidding me? Total BS.

The residents in the neighborhood fought hard to have parking included with the building (even a 50% ratio, which the prior developer had planned), but the county council and planning board don't give a crap what residents and taxpayers want.

JAC - Are you capable of walking AT ALL? Have you ever cooked a meal for yourself?

Why not leave it to the market to decide? Minimum parking requirements make everything unnecessarily expensive as it makes residents pay more even if they don’t want a parking space. I’m a taxpayer and resident, and I applaud finally having a building that will be adding fewer cars to the already overburdened streets.
