Kapow Buddy opening at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Kapow Buddy
is coming soon to Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. It's the latest in a long line of Chipotle-style fast-casual bowl restaurants. This time, the theme cuisine is Thai.

Your imagination will suggest to you that a grain base will be loaded with vegetables, proteins, and Thai cuisine toppings, and - incredibly - your hunch is correct. In fact, Westfield says in its promotion of the restaurant that "Kapow Buddy is eager to introduce their famous Thai food in the 'Bowl Style' to offer customers a variety of choices including grains, proteins, toppings, and more." When it opens, look for Kapow Buddy on Level 1 in the Old Navy wing.

The robbery was reported in the 12500 block of Village Square Terrace at 9:50 PM Wednesday. @DCNewsLive on Twitter reported that a vehicle was later pulled over by police on Old Georgetown Road at the interchange with I-495 in Bethesda. At least one person in that vehicle was detained in relation to the armed robbery.

Free People closing at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Free People
is closing at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The store's final day of operation will be Friday, July 26, 2024. A bohemian brand of Urban Outfitters, Free People opened this location in May of 2013. Despite that solid track record of success, the store has ultimately succumbed to the moribund Montgomery County economy, along with MoCo's high taxes and ever-shrinking business profit margins. Not only do I find no reports of Free People stores closing elsewhere in recent times, but Urban Outfitters is actually expanding the brand by opening additional Free People locations this year.

MCDOT files mandatory referral for Lot 44 redevelopment in Bethesda

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation Parking Division has filed a mandatory referral for the disposition of Public Parking Lot 44 at 4704 West Virginia Avenue in downtown Bethesda with the Montgomery County Planning Department. An apartment building with up to 59 units, 15% of which would be Moderately-Priced Dwelling Units (MPDUs), structured parking, and dedication of 6000 SF for the Eastern Greenway public park has been proposed for the site.

A public hearing on the referral before the Planning Board is tentatively scheduled for September 12, 2024. "Mandatory referral" means that the Planning Board commissioners can advise the County about the proposal, but cannot block it, a privilege given to development, land use, or land acquisition/sale proposals submitted by any level of government to the Planning Board. Commissioners can reject a mandatory referral, but the government can simply ignore that decision and proceed.

Kenwood Club golf course reopens after storm cleanup

The golf course at the Kenwood Golf and Country Club in Bethesda reopened yesterday, after damage and debris caused by a thunderstorm Monday night required it to temporarily close. Fallen trees and branches had to be sawed and removed. Regularly-scheduled maintenance that couldn't be performed until the course was cleared also had to be completed once the cleanup was finished. The storm caused many trees to fall across the area, including not far from the club on Whittier Boulevard, and many power outages.

Purple Line tracks laid under East-West Highway in Bethesda (Photos)

Trucks began hauling rail for the future Purple Line into downtown Bethesda at the end of March. Now you can see the first trackage for the light rail line between Bethesda and New Carrollton under the bridge on East-West Highway. Standard-gauge rail has been laid atop concrete ties on a gravel railbed. To the left is the parallel right-of-way for the Capital Crescent Trail, which will be rebuilt alongside the rail line.

You can also see how much wider the Purple Line is than the single-track CSX freight railroad that originally used this right-of-way between Silver Spring and Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Had regional railroad history turned out differently, it might have ended up being this wide anyway. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad originally constructed the Georgetown Branch railroad as its future gateway from the north to the south, and were attempting to reach a bridge over the Potomac River it had planned to build.

If this project had come to fruition, today it would be a major interstate rail corridor and gateway to the south. Like many other main lines, it might have widened to two or three tracks. However, the B&O scrapped those plans when the Pennsylvania Railroad finally granted it permission to use its Potomac bridge.

The B&O continued to use the Georgetown Branch for over 60 years to deliver freight to customers at Chevy Chase Lake, downtown Bethesda where Bethesda Row is today, the industrial area at River Road, the former U.S. Defense Mapping Agency site that was established in 1942 in the Brookmont area, and on the Georgetown waterfront. Through mergers, the line was later operated by the Chessie System, and ultimately, CSX.

CSX upgraded the track of the Georgetown Branch, which had fallen into such poor condition that engineers were forced to cap their top speed at 10 MPH on some sections. But their investment was ultimately a complete waste of money. When CSX ceased operations and received permission to abandon the line in the mid-1980s, the line was acquired by Montgomery County, and all of that new track was ripped up. The Georgetown Branch right-of-way was then used to build the Capital Crescent Trail.

Sheepskin Gifts and Alpaca Too returns to Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

It's Christmas in July at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Sheepskin Gifts and Alpaca Too has been a seasonal tenant at the mall in recent years, popping up during the holiday shopping season from mid-fall to mid-winter. But the apparel store is making an early return to the mall. Few people are thinking about warm clothing as thermometers reach 100 degrees and higher today, but alpaca wool is known for its ability to wick moisture away from the skin during the summer season. Look for Sheepskin Gifts and Alpaca Too on Level 1, at the center of the mall.

Westfield is going all-in on Pollo Campero in Montgomery Mall, to which it has also leased a space at its Wheaton Plaza mall food court, as well.

Lincoln gives a whiff of "Digital Scents" at Bethesda Row

Luxury automaker Lincoln is displaying its Nautilus SUV on Bethesda Lane at Bethesda Row. Yesterday, Lincoln representatives were promoting the new line of Lincoln Digital Scents, which come included with select 2024 Nautilus models, or can be purchased separately. At Bethesda Row, the scents were displayed in bottles that resemble those in which perfume or cologne would be sold. But the versions for your car come in a cartridge form, and are loaded into the center armrest console. Up to three scents can be installed at once.

You can control the intensity and frequency of scent diffusion using the Digital Scent screen, and set the aromas to function automatically when you start the vehicle. The screen will also indicate how much product is left inside each Digital Scent bottle.

There are currently seven Digital Scents available: Mystic Forest, Ozonic Azure, Violet Cashmere, Cloud Balsam, Serene Seashore, Sunlight Retreat, and Twilight Embers. Ozonic Azure promises to "create the aromatic equivalent of watching the Northern Lights. The pine needles of Cloud Balsam's "evergreen forest" might be the perfect choice for the Christmas season.

There is a Koons Lincoln dealership a few blocks away on Wisconsin Avenue. But the Lincoln representatives at the Bethesda Row display said they were not affiliated with the local dealership. The Lincoln display at Bethesda Row also gives you a chance to win a trip for two to the luxury Faena Miami Beach Hotel, which was named the top hotel in America by readers of Conde Nast Traveler in 2017.

Virginia is named #1 state for business; Maryland is...31st

CNBC
released its annual America's Top States for Business list this morning, and as usual, our neighbor across the Potomac has cleaned our clock once again. The cable network declared Virginia the top state for business in America. Maryland ranked 31st on the list for 2024. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin is already taking a victory lap this morning. "I am thrilled that our great Commonwealth has been named America’s Top State for Business," Youngkin said in a statement. Rest assured you won't be seeing a press release from Maryland today on the subject.

You won't be surprised to know that other states in the top 10 include Texas and Tennessee. But southern, right-to-work states didn't completely dominate the top tier, as union redoubts Minnesota, Michigan, and Washington came in at #6, #9, and #10, respectively. Pro-labor policies don't make for an anti-business state all by themselves.

Delaware surprisingly finished below Maryland. The First State is usually associated with corporations, but is apparently a better place to incorporate your business than to actually operate a business - in CNBC's evaluation. Of course, Elon would strongly disagree.

Why is Maryland failing? It isn't only our failure to attract Fortune 500 companies to the state.

Virginia has the third-best infrastructure in America, according to CNBC. Maryland's infrastructure is ranked way down at 37th-best in America. Ouch. This isn't surprising when you consider that Virginia has built countless miles of new highways; installed Express Lanes on I-395, I-495, and all the way down to Fredericksburg on I-95; expanded Metro subway service through Fairfax and Loudoun Counties to Dulles Airport; now has three passenger airports in Northern Virginia alone, including the vast array of international business destinations only accessible via Dulles Airport; and has greatly expanded - at its own expense - Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express rail service. CNBC also took note of Virginia's "shovel-ready" site availablity.

Over the same period, Maryland has built - well, not much at all. Maryland finally managed to replace the Nice Bridge over the Potomac River after many delays, only to see the Key Bridge in Baltimore collapse because state leaders for decades failed to make the necessary safety improvements they were warned to in 1980. The Purple Line delays speak for themselves. Gov. Wes Moore recently revived the plans for the Baltimore Red Line, but the state lacks any money to build it in the foreseeable future.

Likewise, there's no cash for commuter rail in Southern Maryland or a new Bay Bridge, and any financial drain from the operation of the Purple Line is already directed to take money from other transportation projects to cover the shortfall. Maryland continues to kick the solutions for congestion on I-270 and I-495 can down the road.

Montgomery County likes to cancel transportation infrastructure as much as it likes to ban things. Unless you are a bike lane, you are likely to be canceled by the County Council. The Council's transportation fails include announcing the cancellation of the Montrose Parkway East in White Flint on the very day that Amazon reps were touring the White Flint area during the Amazon HQ2 competition. Our talented County Council also canceled all of the major transportation infrastructure that was required to support its approval of massive housing development in Germantown, Clarksburg and Damascus - - the Corridor Cities Transitway light rail system, and the M-83 Highway. The Rockville Freeway? Removed from the master plan decades ago.

Maryland infamously continues to block construction of any new bridges over the Potomac River, denying itself congestion relief that might negate the need to widen the Beltway and I-270, as well as providing direct access to Dulles Airport that would be essential to attracting major corporations to the I-270 corridor. That highway extension of I-370 to VA-28 has an existing right-of-way from Gaithersburg to the Potomac River crossing site, but none of the intelligence, will, or leadership to build it.

The infrastructure picture in Maryland is so bad, we couldn't even keep the ancient White's Ferry operating. Remember when former Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich built an entire highway, the InterCounty Connector, all by himself? It is now, rightfully, named for him. Our leaders today are super low-energy, by comparison.

Former MD Gov. Bob Ehrlich

Where else does Maryland fall short for business, according to CNBC? We're nearly the worst in America for the "Cost of Doing Business," landing at 47 out of 50. "Right into the buckle - that's gotta hurt, Gene." Montgomery County has the highest tax burden in the Washington, D.C. region, and our County and State tax structures are simply not competitive with Virginia.

CNBC shares the growing consensus that the economies of Montgomery County and Maryland are moribund. Maryland's economy ranks 30th out of all 50 states on their list. And that's probably being very generous of them. Grading on a curve.

Maryland's score for "Workforce" is nearly as bad, at 28 out of 50. This is shocking given that we have some of the most highly-educated populations in America in several counties. But CNBC finds our workforce to be worse than average.

Virginia is #1 for education. Maryland is #14. This isn't surprising if you've watched the slow motion 100-car-pileup decline of Montgomery County Public Schools since the departure of Dr. Jerry Weast, the last MCPS superintendent who - for whatever faults he had - was actually professionally-qualified for the job.

Maryland ranks way down at #37 for "Business Friendliness." Virginia is #5 in that column.

If you're an elected official in Maryland,
don't turn on CNBC today

The news isn't all bad. Maryland rises to 16 out of 50 in quality of life. Texas is dead last in that category. But Virginia is only 3 points behind us at 19th. The Commonwealth was also 19th in cost-of-living. That means they beat us there, too.

CNBC also ranks Maryland in the top 10 states for Technology and Innovation, at #8. This is pretty surprising, too, but likely the result of Montgomery County's only economic bright spot, the biotech sector. Virginia has superior tech infrastructure, and has been home to many more notable tech firms, but somehow ends up at 15 in this category.

We already know that Montgomery County hasn't attracted a single major corporate headquarters in over a quarter century. But it's becoming more surprising by the day that Gov. Moore has been unable to attract such HQs or significant manufacturing facilities to the state. One of his biggest calling cards and selling points was that he was a successful Wall Street businessman. He regularly hobnobs and fundraises among the financial elite on Martha's Vineyard and in the Hamptons. Surely, his Rolodex is bursting at the seams with CEO phone numbers. But, perplexingly, he has yet to score a big win in the corporate HQ and factory races.

The CNBC list only reinforces what engaged observers in our County and State already know. We're in real trouble, folks. And the lack of business starts, development and growth are hitting the County and State budgets harder than ever. Just look at the latest County Council tax hikes (and ballot questions to facilitate even-bigger tax hikes starting next year), and the dystopian budget headlines out of Annapolis.

We can't go on like this.

Dippin' Dots now available at Tobacco & More Mart in Bethesda

Dippin' Dots
are now available at Tobacco & More Mart at 7809 Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda. The flash-frozen ice cream treat can't be sold just anywhere, as it must be stored at −40 °F or colder. For some local residents, Dippin' Dots were a bigger part of life in Bethesda during the 1990s than they probably should have been. We are definitely experiencing Dippin' Dots weather in Bethesda this week.

Radnor Elementary School in Bethesda burglarized again

Montgomery County police responded to a report of a burglary at the Radnor Elementary School building at 7000 Radnor Road in Bethesda on June 29, 2024. At least two suspects entered the school at 3:20 PM that afternoon. Officers responding to the scene found no evidence of forced entry, and could not identify anything as having been stolen from the building.

However, police were successful in catching the alleged burglars. Two juveniles were arrested: A 17-year-old male from Bethesda, and a 17-year-old female of Cabin John. The case will be handled through the juvenile justice system.
