Here's a look at the major progress on the interior fit-out of Pisco y Nazca Ceviche Gastrobar, opening soon at 2 Bethesda Metro Center in downtown Bethesda. The interior design appears to be successfully splitting the difference between Peruvian architectural accents and high-end lounge aesthetics. If you dined at previous tenants McCormick & Schmick’s and Cesco Osteria, you know the place - but you likely won't recognize the space, which has been transformed once again as part of extensive and expensive updates to the office tower property by owner The Chevy Chase Land Company.

Fresh paint at The Cordell in Bethesda
A building on Cordell Avenue is switching colors. Painters began working on the exterior of 4865 Cordell yesterday. The building, formerly home to Grapeseed and Lucy, has been leased by The Cordell, "a unique event space." The Cordell is expected to open before the year is out.
Montgomery County willing to mortgage Upcounty's future to kill M-83 Highway
More than half a decade ago, the Montgomery County Council again nixed plans to build the M-83 Midcounty Highway Extended that has long been in the County's master plan. The highway was one of two major infrastructure projects that were essential to the major growth proposed for the Upcounty area, and Clarksburg in particular. When Clarksburg was allowed to grow more than 800% in population earlier this century, its new residents were promised the M-83 Highway, and a Corridor Cities Transitway light rail system that would connect the proposed new growth centers between Rockville and Clarksburg to the Shady Grove Metro station. In the end, however, all of the growth was allowed to occur, and developers reaped their massive profits - but the promised highway and light rail were never built. That display of naked greed by our developer-controlled County Council wasn't enough - now the Council and Planning Board want to remove the M-83 from the master plan altogether, so it can never be built.

Water main break on Bethesda Avenue (Video + Photos)
A water main break occurred last night on Bethesda Avenue, between Arlington Road and Woodmont Avenue, in the area of Bethesda Row. Substantial pooling of water was evident, as well as a small gusher rising from the pavement. Temperatures have been unseasonably wide in variation over the last couple of weeks, with highs in the 70s often falling to lows near 40 degrees at night. Thus, it is not surprising to see water main breaks, even though they are more typical in winter months.

Mystery Mansion returns to haunt all ages at Woman's Club of Chevy Chase Oct. 25/26; Nov. 1/2
Experience the thrills and chills of live-action Halloween frights without leaving town this coming weekend and next, as the Woman's Club of Chevy Chase at 7931 Connecticut Avenue hosts its fourth annual Mystery Mansion event. The Mystery Mansion experience offers a chilling adventure suitable for all ages. Prepare to be spooked as you navigate the haunted halls of the Woman's Club, encountering creepy characters and spooky surprises along the way. An additional outdoor festival provides a more relaxed atmosphere, with festive activities and treats.
New for 2024!
The Dark Castle and Dark Forest experiences are both family-friendly adventures, open from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. What looks most interesting and unusual is the "slightly scarier" Dark Space, which appears to be an homage to the classic sci-fi horror movie Alien. You ordinarily have to go to a theme park for an experience like that. Prepare to blast off into deep space between 6:00 and 9:00 PM, where you will "navigate through abandoned starships and alien-infested corridors." Remember, in the Woman's Club of Chevy Chase, no one can hear you scream!
Event Details:
Dates: Friday, October 25th & Saturday, October 26th; Friday, November 1st & Saturday, November 2nd
Time: 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Location: Woman's Club of Chevy Chase (free parking is available behind the club)
Tickets: Purchase tickets online at www.mysterymansion.org
Trustar Bank construction commences with demolition of The Corner Slice in Bethesda
Construction of the new Trustar Bank branch at 7901 Norfolk Avenue in downtown Bethesda is now underway. The first order of business, of course, was to destroy the former interior of The Corner Slice, which previously occupied this building. You can get a sneak peek at the interior design of the new bank on the blueprints shown below. Trustar previously announced its intention to open here before the end of fall, which gives them just about two months to finish the job.

Automatic doors installed at Bethesda Lidl
Automatic electric doors have been installed at the entrance to the future Bethesda Lidl grocery store at 7625 Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda. The good news is that construction continues to proceed apace at the supermarket successor to Safeway at Bethesda Place. The bad news is that paper has been placed over the windows to block views of that progress. No opening date for the store has been announced as of this morning, but it is expected to open sometime this winter.
The Cashmere Sale pop-up opens Sunday in Bethesda
The Cashmere Sale, a pop-up shop featuring men's and women's cashmere apparel and accessories, will open tomorrow, Sunday, October 20, 2024 at 7770 Woodmont Avenue in downtown Bethesda (across the street from the Tastee Diner, and between Starbucks and Black's Bar + Kitchen). Founded two decades ago in a Greenwich, Connecticut living room, the seasonal shop has since expanded to 17 coastal towns and cities. Greenwich is still on the list.
The Bethesda store will operate through December 13 this year. Operating hours will be 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday, and 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sundays. If you prefer to shop from home, you can use the code BETHESDA2024 to receive free shipping on your order. Of course, the advantage of the pop-up shop is that you can see and feel the product in-person, if you've been burned in the past by a cheap and scratchy sweater you've ordered on the internet.
The Cashmere Sale sells only products employing the superior double-ply strand count of cashmere. The brand's mission statement is, "We pop up just when you need us for a limited time at irresistible prices."

Mussel Bar & Grille packing in crowds in return to Bethesda
Mussel Bar & Grille returned to Bethesda this week, two years after it closed at Bethesda Row. It reopened in its new spot at 4903 Cordell Avenue this past Wednesday. Last night, every table appeared to be full inside the restaurant, as you can see in the photos below. It's a good sign for a space where other concepts have struggled and closed in recent years.
Kelly's Cajun Grill opens at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda
Kelly's Cajun Grill has opened in the Dining Terrace food court at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The fast-casual chain was founded in 1991, and is best known as the Home of the Famous Bourbon Chicken. Other popular dishes on the menu includes Lemon Chicken, Steak and Shrimp, and Shrimp Etouffee. The chain says that its streamlined menu allows for very fresh ingredients, and an efficient kitchen operation.
Westfield has a wonderful description of the new food court tenant. "The menu at Kelly’s Cajun Grill is based on a very old concept of cooking that originated in southern France. This distinct cooking style made its way from France to Nova Scotia, eventually settling in Louisiana. As the menu traveled further south to the state of Louisiana, flavors were enhanced and spices were added, making it a more local cooking style for Cajun people. For many years it remained a specialty of the Louisiana Bayou country -- until the rest of the world discovered it." I gar-on-tee!!
