Bethesda Library to be renamed after Republican congresswoman Connie Morella, reopen Saturday

The Bethesda Library at 7400 Arlington Road will reopen this Saturday, April 14, at 10:00 AM. One surprise is that the library is going to be renamed the Connie Morella Library, after the former Republican congresswoman who represented the Bethesda area from 1987 to 2003.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held to celebrate the reopening, after a major renovation of the building. Attendees arriving by car are being asked to park at County Public Parking Garage 49 at 7601 Woodmont Avenue, and take a shuttle bus to the library (9:30 AM to noon). Parking spaces at the library will only be available for those who have ADA license plates or hang tags.

A nice memorial for what the GOP used to be. Before it became the party of Sarah Palin and Donald Trump.

This is dumb. Community buildings should be named to describe their function, not as a tributute to a politician. What’s next, the Hans Riemer Community Swimming Pool? The Robin Ficker Fire Station?

I thought the Carl Henn Millennium Trail was fitting and appropriate.

10:01 AM Agreed. Fond memories of Carl when the Trail pops up in my GPS.

An excellent choice for the library! As an English professor at MC, she quoted Shakespeare at the drop of a hat. An amazing woman, she managed to be a liberal Republican in the House until she was redistricted, then was appointed to the OECD as ambassador.

"Come, and take choice of all my library, And so beguile thy sorrow."
William Shakespeare

I don't see why this should be a surprise. She was well-liked, popular, respected, and served the District well. Unfortunately, she would have no place in the current Republican Party.

Personally, I'd like to see the Donald Trump Memorial Sewage Treatment Plant!

Great Congress woman, she was more concerned about her constituents than promoting herself or her party.
