Asbestos removal begins at doomed Bethesda building

An asbestos removal project is underway in the space formerly home to Hannah's Barbershop at 8007 Norfolk Avenue. It is expected to be complete by August 27. The structure housing this space and several other businesses is going to be torn down to make way for The Clairborne condos. Hannah's has moved into the nearby Gallery Bethesda II building.

Good news that a project is actually being started during this crisis. Of course, the new multifamily/retail mixed use building with underground parking will take at least 2 years to build, so the developer is obviously playing the long game here. Perhaps some general contractors, sub-contractors and material suppliers are actually lowing their prices to stay busy, making this a good time for many of the 30 fully approved projects in the pipeline line in downtown Bethesda to bid out and get built.

Obviously residential project are more likely to proceed than office capers. I read that the Bethesda Bio project at the gas station is on hold at this point, unless a large tenant comes forward to pre-lease a large part of the building. Perhaps Novavax might someday relocate to downtown Bethesda.

I also read today that Elrich has announced an initiative with WMATA in White Flint to create a bio-tech hub, on WMATA leases property.

Sorry, 8 of those projects are already under construction, or completed, but 22 do have fully approved site plans.

It looks like the small condo project on Avondale behind the Marvin window store and across the street from the funeral home is also ready to start the construction process. The demolition permit has been posted.
