Armed carjacking in Hillmead neighborhood of Bethesda

Montgomery County police responded to a report of an armed carjacking in the Hillmead neighborhood of Bethesda on the evening of March 5, 2023. According to a source, a resident drove up to his home in the 8700 block of Lowell Street around 8:15 PM Sunday night, and began to walk to the door. At that point, four or five African-American men emerged from a stolen vehicle parked in front of the next house. Two of the men brandished firearms and demanded property from the victim. The resident complied, and handed over his car keys, cash and a cell phone. Stay alert!

Stay alert? Are you kidding me? This is absolutely outrageous. My gosh! What is it going to take? And Dem elected officials in Annapolis, backed by the county, which has already acted, are are trying to severely curtail our right to carry statewide. Please tell me who that's going to help this homeowner? This is just beyond words.

Outrageous is right, we know what the problem is but cannot address it. Hint: these guns aren't just doing this on their own. How do we defend ourselves and our property? Moco needs to come down hard on this. Big joke.

@5:18 MOVE! Take your self-righteous attitude to DeSintos land. He'll coddle and spoon you to your heats content. I'm sure you'll feel safe from all those bad guys.

Absolutely horrifying.

Congratulations Elrich Voters. You own this.

7:45 - A strong Biden and Elrich supporter clearly. A suggestion, use your spell-check.

@7:45 AM: It's so on-brand for you leftist Elrich Supporters to tell the people who are concerned about serious violent crime in MoCo to leave MoCo instead of you actually addressing the serious violent crime problem here. Just so you know, I conceal carry because of people like you. I wouldn't have to if you supported having the police do their job and supported having the justice system lock these criminals away for a long, long time.

@6:55 AM: You do what you can to address it. You start by getting the proper training and certification for a MD Wear and Carry Permit, and any other state licenses that you want to get (VA, DC, etc.). You then purchase and practice with a MD-Compliant firearm. Make it a habit to scan for occupied vehicles on the street as you leave and return home. You have to accept that reality going forward. MoCo has had every opportunity to come down on this. It's just not a priority for them and MoCo PD doesn't have the staffing to effectively patrol, deter and arrest. You can thank the all-Democrat County Leadership for that.

I agree! Move to a Constitutional Carry state. Florida might soon make it 25 states! Very polite people on those states.

More work needs to be done on diversity. We need to recruit more Asian carjackers!

Stay alert. You never know when you might get caught in the middle of a gun battle between your neighbor and the thief stealing her effing car.
Is it better to go to jail and fight for your release than to file an insurance claim? Shoot a car thief and find out.

Seems to me that one shouldn’t have to choose between the ability to walk safely from car to front door or moving out of state.

shanel said...

Put your gun away, JAC. If that car thief is a juvinile, then you are looking at a lifetime of . . .

Anonymous said...

This is a lot more than just 'stealing cars.'

Really, what should be done?
It’s just too easy to poke Robert, as fun as that is.

How do we get more people into the police Academy?
Is this huge push by the MOCO Council To turn Bethesda into an urban high-rise city part of the problem?
Wondering if the collapse of DC since the pandemic is part of the problem?

10:19 - Well said and also on point.

Shanel, so, you don't support a right to carry? That's fine but don't tread on others. I will say that you're correct from a certain point of view. You have to know that law when considering carrying a firearm. If you ever discharge that weapon you must know what is legal and not if that makes sense.

7:18 really has no understanding about concealed carry and simply parrots liberal knee-jerk reactions. Try educating yourself before revealing ignorance in public.

@7:18 PM: Seems like you don't know, but Maryland is a "Duty to Retreat" state. You can look up what that means. Conceal carry is primarily intended for self-defense and not going over to the defense of others. Also, deadly force is not justified for the defense of property. However, in this case there were two firearms presented by the criminals which constitute an imminent deadly threat. So If I was the individual being carjacked in this case, I would have been fully justified in using my concealed firearm to defend myself against these individuals with firearms.

Brilliant response, 8:15. Its not overtly insulting but exposes the leftist position for the absurdity that it is. Bravo. 7:45 is obviously one of those closed-minded folks who uncritically accept the smear tactics of the main-stream media. DeSantis will be the next president if electoral sanity prevails.

JAC said...

6:01 - Correct. Yes, you would have been justified to use deadly force against an imminent threat of deadly harm.

Shanel,
They are very often juveniles. And guess what, if they're breaking the law and trying to car jack someone in front of their own home, as they get out of their cars with groceries, etc, eventually, they are going to get shot. Maybe more need to be killed. But, reality check, MD is not that kind of place for the most part and the dumb ass teenage crooks know that which is why they do it here. Try this brazen BS amateur hour crime in TX and see what happens.

Soon you'll be getting people coming to your door looking for handouts, the political climate is fostering that thinking among the entitlement seekers.

I hope he waits a cycle, we could use some strategic retribution.

Ya'll are delusional implying the person who was robbed wouldn't have been robbed or would have been able to defend themselves if they had a gun. The robbers already had their weapons drawn when they approached the victim. Maybe in your daydreams where you whip the big iron from your hip and perfectly shoot someone in a flash draw would you have a chance, but perfect scenarios rarely if ever happen when firearms are used.

The solution for crimes like this is rarely if every only just adding or subtracting a gun from the situation. Those with such a plain and naive worldview to disagree are probably the ones having those types of daydreams.

Agreed. For this incident, however, if we were more readily and Constitutionally allowed to defend ourselves these incidents would be less frequent. As it is now we are sitting ducks, these 'individuals with guns' know it. I choose to defend myself, if you do not wish to or you do not have the stomach for it, then don't arm yourself. Just don't tell me what I can't do.

11:21 - and as I've said repeatedly, the county and state are trying to go around SCOTUS as New York is doing by so severely restricting where you can carry that it's almost not worth it. Yes, they actually don't have any interest whatsoever in citizens protecting themselves with a firearm

Add DC to NYC. I remember Mayor Bowser her very first swearing in, immediately after swearing to defend our Constitution she said she was against self protection and wanted all the guns off the streets. She made that clear even with the responsible owners, as well. They put up so many roadblocks that only the new 'undocumented' can protect themselves.

JAC said...

She's a friggin idiot and joins a long line of feckless and do nothing Dem leaders. Ask Baltimore how taking guns away has helped. Biggest crap hole of a city since the 60's. Problem there like here is now there's no obstacle to the criminal element to go to a nicer neighborhood and have their fill. An armed car jacking in front of someone's home right off greentree road in Bethesda. Think about that for a second.

JAC said...

Yeah, I guess this armed car jack in Hillmead was an isolated incident. Nope. There was an armed car jacking today, Saturday, in broad daylight outside of Costco in Wheaton. Talk about stupid crooks. There must have been 100 eye witnesses. Don't tell me this is no big deal. Don't tell me that severely restricting our right to carry is a step in the right direction. This is the very definition of anarchy. These punks can do whatever they want and nothing happens to them. If they get caught, they'll hit the streets again the next morning. And the decent folks? Watch your damn backs. This is bad.

If he got a getaway vehicle earlier, maybe the one victim could have been spared. I think this was just a situation that got out of control, eventually the police would have caught up to him in a safer environment for everyone.
