Nordstrom upholds Christmas display tradition at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Nordstrom
's exterior display windows are covered at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. A sign notes that the displays won't be revealed until Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. This is not inspired by the backlash of recent years against Thanksgiving Day sales, but continues a 124-year tradition by the department store chain. Nordstrom does not put up Christmas decor or play Christmas music in its stores until the day after Thanksgiving. "One holiday at a time" is the chain's motto for its policy.

More need to follow their decades example. Retailers of all kinds have had Christmas decorations and setup for months and it's not even Thanksgiving yet. Home Depot behind Montgomery Mall removed every Halloween item just hours after 10/31. Should anyone sell items related to Halloween after the 31st? Probably not. But full on Christmas when November 1st has barley dawned is too much.

Some stores are putting Valentine's Day items in special displays even before New Year's.

8:56 - Hallmark holiday. But, gross.

Do they actually call it "Christmas"?

JAC @ 9:56 AM - Valentine's Day as been observed for centuries, primarily as the commemoration of a Christian martyr. It's not a "Hallmark Holiday" in the slightest. Don't use words unless you actually know what they mean.

6:57 - Oh, ok teacher. I'm quite aware, as a lifelong Christian, of what Saint Valentine's represents. It would be silly to disagree with the fact that the holiday has become a "Hallmark" holiday. How many appreciate the historical significance these days? Extremely few thus my comment about what it's become.
