Heckman's Deli to host High Holidays menu tasting September 9 in Bethesda

Heckman's-Caddies Catering will host a High Holidays complimentary tasting at Caddies on Cordell at 4922 Cordell Avenue on September 9, 2019 at 6:30 PM. The tasting is free, but you must RSVP to lisa@heckmanscaddiescatering.com to attend. Corned beef, brisket, whitefish, and noodle kugel will be among the selections from the Heckman's Deli menu for the High Holidays.

Heckman's Deli sold, will continue to operate with Ethiopian menu

Heckman's Deli in downtown Bethesda has been sold. The deli, which opened four years ago this month at 4914 Cordell Avenue, will continue to operate with some significant changes. Heckman's new owner says the deli will still sell beer and wine, but the food offerings will change to Ethiopian cuisine.

Just a few months ago, there were no Ethiopian restaurants in downtown Bethesda. The new Heckman's menu will bring us up to three, quite a boon for fans of the cuisine. If you are still seeking the old menu, the owner says various Heckman's specialties will continue to be available a few doors up the street at Caddies on Cordell, at 4922 Cordell.

Spring weather gets Bethesda deli working on its patio space (Photos)

Although it's seemed more like winter in the last few days, the arrival of spring has brought back outdoor patio dining in downtown Bethesda. It appears spring will bring an update to the patio at Heckman's Delicatessen on Cordell Avenue. Men were working there yesterday afternoon. Stay tuned for updates.

NEW AWNING AT HECKMAN'S DELI IN BETHESDA (PHOTOS)

Heckman's Delicatessen, at 4914 Cordell Avenue in downtown Bethesda, just added a new awning. The awning emphasizes the "bar" at the deli, interestingly enough.

HECKMAN'S DELICATESSEN POSTS COMING SOON SIGN (PHOTOS)

The "Coming Soon" sign is up at Heckman's Delicatessen, and the future deli on Cordell Avenue is hiring staff. They've also applied for a liquor license from Montgomery County. Here are some new pictures of the interior; as best as I can tell, nothing significant has been altered since my last update:

HECKMAN'S DELICATESSEN BETHESDA CONSTRUCTION UPDATE (PHOTOS)

Here's a look at the progress inside and out at the future Heckman's Delicatessen, at 4914 Cordell Avenue. Obviously, the frame is awaiting installation of the new awning out front.

Inside, new shelving has been installed along the wall behind the main counter. It looks like the interior paint has been freshened up. And a neon "OPEN" sign rests on one of the tables, also awaiting installation.

HECKMAN'S DELICATESSEN CONSTRUCTION UPDATE (PHOTOS)

Here's the latest progress at one of two Bethesda delis under construction in the Woodmont Triangle. Heckman's Delicatessen has removed the Maggie's awning and signage at last. Furniture and seating is now in place, as well. Note that the white checkerboard pattern on the seat cushions matches the similar pattern on the floor. What's that thing looming over the deli in the background? Why, that's the Bainbridge Bethesda apartment tower, still under construction a block away.

HECKMAN'S DELICATESSEN TO OPEN IN BETHESDA (PHOTOS)

A second new delicatessen is coming to the Woodmont Triangle neighborhood of downtown Bethesda. Heckman's Delicatessen is opening in the former Maggie's space at 4914 Cordell Avenue.

As you can see in these photos, the interior has already gotten a makeover. Workers were busy Wednesday, as construction continues. A retro checkerboard tile floor is matched with a contemporary counter design.

Many residents have sought a "real" deli in downtown Bethesda, with everyone having their own definition of what that means. Others have their own favorites among the existing delis. Heckman's won't be the only one in town, but many have come and gone in recent years. Now Bethesda will have another contender in the market.

But Heckman's will have an equally-new competitor of its own just blocks away. Aria Beer Wine and Deli is currently under construction in the ground floor of the new Gallery Bethesda luxury apartment tower, located at 4800 Auburn Avenue. Heckman's also plans to sell alcohol in its deli. And Red Bull.
