BETHESDA BUILDING DEMOLISHED! EXCLUSIVE PHOTO GALLERY

"PHANTOM CONDO"
BUILDING KNOCKED
DOWN TO MAKE WAY
FOR
NORFOLK-CORDELL II

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

It was just two days ago that I exclusively broke the story here that 4901 Cordell Avenue was going to be redeveloped as Norfolk-Cordell II, and include a rooftop restaurant.

Less than 24 hours later, the large vehicle you saw in one of the photos surged forward and demolished much of the old brick building.

Here is an exclusive photo gallery surveying the scenes of destruction:
The old sign for the never-built luxury Veneto condos is
still attached to the building!

Debris cascades out the front door
Hope nobody's working late in that
upstairs office!

The only vehicle in Bethesda with a
sure parking space tonight
Pedestrians should take care in
this area.  Debris - including glass -
was not entirely contained

King of the mountain!

A pay phone?  This really is Old Town Bethesda!
Hope the Bros. made it out in time
Lord Vader, your backhoe is ready

When did old-fashioned wrecking

They're not kidding, folks!

BETHESDA WEATHER FORECAST

MICROSOFT POP-UP STORE TO OPEN IN BETHESDA FOR HOLIDAYS

WESTFIELD MONTGOMERY
ONE OF 32 NATIONWIDE
LOCATIONS TO PUMP UP
AMERICA FOR
SURFACE RT TABLET

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

Microsoft announced yesterday that it will open a holiday Microsoft Pop-up Store in Bethesda at Westfield Montgomery Mall.  The company did not say when the store will open, but my suggestion would be October 26.
Microsoft Store yesterday at Tyson's Corner
Why October 26?  That's when Microsoft's intriguing Surface RT tablet will be released, and the inside word is that the Surface is the raison d'etre for the pop-up stores.  Given that you will only be able to buy a Surface from a Microsoft Store, it's only sensible that the company would flesh out its spartan retail network nationwide for the tablet's launch.

At a rumored price of $199, the 32 GB Surface will be a formidable match for the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire.  While many assumed the tablet wars would produce a winner named Apple or Google, Amazon has changed the narrative in the last 12 months.  People are justified to be skeptical of Microsoft seriously threatening Apple in the gadget department (Zune, anyone?).  But the Surface Pro and RT models have generated substantial buzz this summer, buzz that became almost deafening when the $199 price rumor "leaked" four weeks ago.

Do you want a Surface?

Most will have to try one before they can answer that question.

Microsoft's Bethesda pop-up store is designed to let you do just that.

AROMA ESPRESSO BAR - ISRAEL'S BIGGEST COFFEE CHAIN - TO OPEN BETHESDA LOCATION IN DECEMBER

UNIQUE MENU ITEMS
COMING TO
WESTFIELD MONTGOMERY
LOCATION

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

Big news for Bethesda caffeine fiends:  The Israeli version of Starbucks, Aroma Espresso Bar, will open a Bethesda location in December 2012.

Aroma has chosen to expand in some interesting and underrated locales, such as Romania, Ukraine and Poland.  Their US expansion has been largest in New York City.

I've never been to an Aroma cafe, so I have to turn to my NYC sources, who have been to the Upper West Side location.  Their consensus was that the coffee was no better or worse than Starbucks, and the food was what gave Aroma an advantage over competitors.

Well, I'm looking forward to giving Aroma a try, and coming to my own conclusions.

Examining their menu, I notice they have some unique items:  Alfajor South American cookies, Rugalach, Pancake Bites, and Bulgarian pastries called Bureka.  But they are savory pastries, rather than sweet.

There is a Mediterranean influence on the sandwich, salad and breakfast menus, and a pudding called Sachlav, with coconut, pistachio and cinnamon.

I'd like to have more international chains like this open here.  Vapiano and Kraze Burger were two of the most interesting restaurants to open in recent years, and their origins overseas brought new variety to their menus.

Look forward to taking a caffeine break during holiday shopping this December, at Aroma in Westfield Montgomery Mall!

SWEATER WEATHER TONIGHT IN BETHESDA - BETHESDA, MD FORECAST

Out of the frying pan and into the igloo.  After a relentlessly hot summer, suddenly tonight you'll have to remember how to put on outerwear.

Yes, the lows tonight will be in the upper 40s(!!).

Hot libations may be in style at the bars around Bethesda this evening.

But first, we'll have fantastic weather today - sunny, with highs in the very comfortable mid-70s.  A nice breeze, but with wind gusts up to 25 MPH.

Then you'll have to call on your sweaters and jackets a bit early this year, when temperatures plunge into the upper 40s later tonight.  5-10 MPH breeze.

CALIFORNIA TORTILLA BETHESDA CONSTRUCTION/GRAND OPENING UPDATE (PHOTOS)

PLUS:
YOU MAY BE A
SPUNKY CASHIER
AND NOT EVEN
KNOW IT YET!

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

The new California Tortilla on Cordell Avenue is coming along quickly.  I have some photos of the new interior, and it's looking swanky.  The finishes on everything are particularly nice, and look way more expensive than the prices you pay on the menu.

I have word from Burrito Queen Pam herself, that the new location is now scheduled to open in 3 weeks.  The great thing about building the new Cal Tort across from the original, is that this is a rare case of being able to enjoy everything on the menu of a restaurant, while you're waiting for its Grand Opening!

Finally, Bethesda job seekers will want to know that the new flagship location is hiring now:

NEW ROOFTOP RESTAURANT COMING TO DOWNTOWN BETHESDA!!

OPEN AIR RESTAURANT
AND BAR EXPECTED TO
OPEN IN MID-2013

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

One category that Bethesda has fallen behind DC and Clarendon in, is rooftop restaurants and bars.  Right now we have the Doubletree rooftop, and the upstairs patio at Tia Queta, and, well, that's about it.

That's going to change next year!

Regular readers may recall my ongoing coverage of the old, brick building on the northwest corner of Norfolk and Cordell Avenues.  Its future has been an ongoing mystery for some time.  First it was going to be a luxury condo building called The Veneto.  That never happened.  There seemed to be a number of options floated on various signs attached to the building this year.

Recently, the latest signs disappeared, and some interesting activity began to take place - which I'll get to in a moment.

But you probably have guessed where I'm going with this:  Yes, I have now confirmed officially that 4901 Cordell Avenue/7940 Norfolk Avenue (one building, two addresses) is going to be reborn as...

Norfolk-Cordell II.
Rendering: Steven J. Karr AIA, Inc.
I have to say, this is one of the few exciting projects underway in downtown Bethesda.  First of all, it is practically all glass around the facade.  It looks fantastic.  Second of all, it is going to house two, elevated dining patios - one on the second floor, and the main attraction, the rooftop restaurant and bar.

The building and rooftop are being developed by renowned Montgomery County architect Steven J. Karr.  Karr says the client he is building the two-floor restaurant/bar for is undisclosed at this time.  But with the multi-level size, I wonder if it could be a well-known national chain.

On the ground floor will be upscale retail space, and the lobby and elevator to reach the restaurant upstairs.  Floor 2 will house a 3,800 square foot, full-service restaurant with seating for 122, and a private dining room for 32 people.  The second floor will also contain the establishment's main bar, with 46 bar stools, and standing room for 71.  Last, but not least, there will be the second floor outdoor patio with 60 seats.

The best part is the rooftop.  1700 square feet of dining space for 156 people, and an 800 square foot rooftop bar with 19 stools, and standing room for 70.

Here's the cool part today:  You can fly in, over and around the rooftop restaurant like Superman (or Supergirl) with this 3D simulation that will start up when you click here.

I'm excited about the design, and getting another rooftop in Bethesda.  This will be a low-rise structure, but the views should still be nice.

Of course, to get the new building is going to mean destroying at least a portion of the old building.  That's the "activity" I referred to earlier.

First, the lease signs vanished.  Then some work was going on.  Then a brace appeared on the back wall.  The next day, a bunch of braces.  Then a large construction vehicle.   Clearly a project was moving forward, and sure enough, the next day a fence went up around the building, and a demolition sign appeared outside.
Day 1
Day 2

Day 3

So I went in search of the answer, and here it is today.

Are you ready for a W Hotel rooftop experience in downtown Bethesda?  I knew you would be.

EXPOSED: THE DAMAGE CAUSED TO FRESH GRILL BY BAINBRIDGE SITE EXCAVATION REVEALED!

PHOTO DIARY GIVES
BLOW-BY-BLOW
ACCOUNT OF HOW A
TWO-TENANT STRUCTURE
BECAME THE MOST
DANGEROUS BUILDING
IN BETHESDA

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

Now it can be told.  The tale began when I broke the story in March that popular Fresh Grill and Dansez! Dansez! had been forced out of their Fairmont Avenue building, due to construction damage.  An excavation project - literally at the building's back wall - was underway for Bainbridge's mixed-use project, The Monty.

Something went wrong, unspecified damage occurred that made the building uninhabitable, and all parties lawyered up, declining to share details with the press.

My emails to Fresh Grill went unanswered, and a recent article on Bethesda Patch noted that inquiries were similarly rebuffed by all parties.  Understandably, given the circumstances, I suppose.

But while researching further, I struck gold, and found that a consultant to the Fresh Grill building has publicly posted detailed photos of extensive structural damage, and the Herculean efforts to prevent further disaster.  Cracked walls, buckled sidewalks, and much more; all raising questions as to the fate of this building.  Multiple supports ostensibly prevent catastrophe at the edge of a literal abyss.

While this does not explain what the current status of the now-greatly delayed Monty project is, or the future status of Fresh Grill as a business, it does give an idea of how bad the damage is.   A lot of people are hoping Fresh Grill can reopen somewhere else, presumably at the expense or generosity of whatever party is deemed to be responsible - or steps up and takes responsibility - for their total loss of income.  It's possible that's happened already, and that's why the parties can't speak publicly.  But we won't likely know until the legal process has run its course.

BETHESDA THIEVES GOT BUSY THURSDAY - BETHESDA CRIME UPDATE

GREEN ACRES
VICTIMIZED AGAIN

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

Labor Day has passed, but thieves preying on the Green Acres neighborhood in Bethesda seem intent on extending the community's "Summer of Snatch."

Three more thefts were reported by Green Acres residents this past Thursday, September 6.  That same day, another Bethesda home was broken into in Bannockburn.

Here are the details:

Thursday, September 6

Burglary.  6300 block of Redwing Road.

Theft.  5300 block of Western Avenue.

Theft.  5000 block of Brookdale Road.

Theft from vehicle.  4900 block of Allan Road.

BETHESDA STORM UPDATE - THUNDERSTORM CAUSED MINIMAL DAMAGE, MAXIMUM POWER OUTAGES

PEPCO RESTORED
MOST BETHESDA
OUTAGES BY END OF
EVENING

A typical summer thunderstorm passed through Bethesda yesterday, but caused extensive power outages across town.  While a number of trees fell, the damage was nowhere near that caused by the so-called "derecho" storm this summer.

Many residents reported losing power even before the storm had reached its height.  There was also frustration that Pepco had initially given restoration timetables to customers, and then later declined to give any estimate.

Power outages affected downtown Bethesda on streets like St. Elmo, Norfolk and Fairmont Avenues.  Many restaurants were forced to close for the prime dinner hours, including Chef Tony's, Union Jack's, Olazzo, Jiffy Shoppes, and Plaza del Sol.  All eventually had power restored, and will be open for regular business today.

Outside of town, traffic lights were out at some intersections of River Road and Old Georgetown Road, and in many of the neighborhoods they border.  A burning tree limb was reported at the intersection of River Road and Braeburn Parkway.
A fallen tree entirely shut down
Westbard Avenue for hours Saturday
An entire tree collapsed across Westbard Avenue, in front of the Westbard Mews townhome community.  The road was blocked for hours, and there were no police or even flares to warn drivers.  One citizen eventually entered the roadway, haplessly attempting to direct traffic with an umbrella.  Nearby, Bowlmor Lanes, McDonald's, Giant Food and the Park Bethesda apartment were without power.
A large tree limb was hanging from Pepco
wires, but was not the culprit in outages
Pepco restored power across downtown Bethesda first.  A Pepco truck was spotted about 40 minutes later in the Westbard area.  Over the next few hours, all outages in that area were restored, with Park Bethesda being the last.

If you are still without power, please post a comment below.  As far as outages that I received tips about from readers and friends, every one of them has been restored.  So I won't make it "official" until I give others a chance to report outages, but anecdotally, Pepco did a far superior job than during the last storm.  Of course, the damage was far less, and many couldn't understand what exactly caused the power to go out in the first place. But not having to go for days without power yet again, I can't complain too much; it really could be worse.

TROPICAL STORM LESLIE UPDATE - BETHESDA, MD WEATHER NEWS

BETHESDA STORM CENTER
LESLIE UPDATE

Yes, Hurricane Leslie has weakened back into a tropical storm again.  Leslie could regain hurricane status over the weekend, but the only threat it poses to the U.S. is the potential for rip currents and dangerous surf conditions at Atlantic beaches, from northern Florida upwards.  So if you're at the beach this weekend, check surf conditions before going into the ocean.

ANOTHER BURGLARY JUST OUTSIDE OF DOWNTOWN BETHESDA

A burglary in the 6600 block of Glenbrook Road on Wednesday, September 5, follows a series of break-ins in wealthy neighborhoods immediately outside downtown Bethesda.

The street - in between Little Falls Parkway and Bradley Boulevard - is just up the Parkway from Somerset, which has experienced 5 break-ins since the burglaries began in July.  Montgomery County Police have assigned special patrols in Somerset.  Glenbrook is a street of large McMansions, adjacent to Kenwood and Little Falls Stream Valley Park.

It's yet another reminder to lock doors and take note of suspicious vehicles parked or driving slowly through your neighborhood.  Invariably, these crimes are only committed after the burglars first case the neighborhood during the day.  So a tip you give police in the afternoon could stop a crime that night.

WOODMONT AVENUE CLOSURE PHOTO GALLERY EXCLUSIVE! BETHESDA ROW STREET CLOSED

SEE HOW THEY
DID IT!

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive

The hour finally arrived Friday night, and a small army of construction workers, police and heavy machines began closing a section of Woodmont Avenue between Bethesda and Miller Avenues.  It wasn't immediate, however, and even after midnight, Woodmont hadn't yet been entirely walled off at Bethesda Avenue.

As planned, a new traffic signal arm was brought to life at the famous Barnes and Noble intersection.  Then the northbound side of the Woodmont stretch was shut down, with inbound traffic from 355 diverted down Leland Street.  Interestingly, while Miller Avenue will be an important relief artery during the 2-year street closure, last night its intersection with Woodmont was barricaded, and inbound drivers waved back to Wisconsin Avenue.

Watch how it all happened with this exclusive on-scene photo gallery:

I can't tell what those long white planks are.  Molding that they can reutilize in the new restaurant on Norfolk Avenue?

Whatever's going on in there, it is in the early stages.

YOGI CASTLE UPDATES SIGN TO REFLECT NEW SEPTEMBER OPENING

MY FIRST BETHESDA APARTMENT - A YOUNG PERSON'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO APARTMENT HUNTING IN BETHESDA, MD - BETHESDA APARTMENTS, RENTALS

Welcome to the third installment of My First Bethesda Apartment:  a weekly, urban guide to the intimidating task of apartment hunting in Bethesda, and scoring and tricking out your dream pad once you find it.

Have questions about Bethesda - restaurants, stores, where to find "this or that?"  Just post a comment, or send me an email.

BETHESDA APARTMENT(S)
OF THE
WEEK

We have a tie this week!  In fact, there was a three-way tie, but I whittled it down to two.  They are in different buildings, but both were built by Nathan Landow:

1 BR/1 BA  FAIRMONT PLAZA [Click for listing] - $1795 a month

If you read the debut edition of My First Bethesda Apartment, you already know what makes Fairmont Plaza a great building for a young, single person, or two roommates.  But this unit is even swankier than that one was.  Especially for the ladies, because it has the deluxe floorplan with 5(!!) closets.  And a double, wraparound balcony that's not only great for entertaining, but means you have floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding door access from your bedroom.

Some notes about the listing:  There actually is no "desk" per se in the lobby, but there is a building representative on duty off the lobby during the listed hours.  He or she can receive packages for you while you're at work, for example.  Also, I believe pets are allowed in the building, but this particular unit's owner is specifying no pets.  Which is smart from an investment standpoint, but I clarify that so that people won't think the building has a no pet policy.

On to Apartment #2!
The Seasons

Studio   The Seasons - $1425 a month

This is a large, 600 square foot studio in The Seasons, at 4710 Bethesda Avenue.  It's 50 sq. ft. smaller than the Fairmont Plaza unit, and The Seasons itself is twice the age of Fairmont Plaza.

So why is it tied with the Fairmont listing?

Price, size, Landow materials, and location, location, location.  The Seasons is a football throw away from Barnes and Noble at Bethesda Row, Landmark Bethesda Row Theatre, the Capital Crescent Trail and the many nearby restaurants.  In just the last 2 weeks, a Zipcar station was added right outside of Barnes and Noble, so you don't even need a car.
Floorplan - click to enlarge

Much like Fairmont Plaza, when you enter the lobby, you'll immediately know you're in a Nathan Landow building.  You won't find cheap floors, or the 1940s-style "health facility" interior design of lesser buildings.

You also get a 24-hour service desk, balconies, parquet floors (in the units, not just common areas) and a fitness center.

One thing to know if you are coming from outside of the area:  a major construction project will be ongoing next to The Seasons for the next 2 years.  It should not affect people too much after business hours, but you know how those things go!  So be sure to check which side of the building you are on before leasing [construction will be next to the west side of the building (Woodmont Avenue)].

You also have the Zen Tara Tea shop, a boutique, and a Jimmy Johns sandwich shop right outside the front door.

To tour The Seasons, call 301-652-6688, or stop by the lobby at 4710 Bethesda Avenue.

SPLURGE OR FAKE IT

Spend lavishly, or just make everyone think you did!

We've been talking about roommates splitting a 1 BR apartment over the last 3 weeks, and that usually involves a living room sofa bed of some kind.

So let's examine a couple of sleeper sofas:

SPLURGE

Ava Tufted Sleeper Sofa from Urban Outfitters - $749

FAKE IT

Ektorp Sofa Bed from IKEA - $649

The Ava sofa sure looks more posh and expensive.  And sophisticated.  But there are downsides.  First, it stains and damages easily, while the IKEA sofa has a machine washable cover.  Second, reviewers say the Ava is extremely firm as both a bed and a sofa.  So it's one to avoid if that would be a problem for you.  The IKEA reviewed better for comfort on and off of the retailer's website.

The best thing to do is to try sofa beds in the store.  Finding a comfortable sofa bed can mean not only getting double duty out of one expenditure, but saving that much more money for other expenses.  Faking it will save you $100 this week.

FIRST-TIME RENTER
TIP OF THE WEEK

When planning to lease your first apartment, make sure to budget beyond rent and your deposit.  There can be a number of fees required after you sign the lease, so don't get caught short and lose the apartment.  Find out what utilities average if they aren't included, too, and what level of cable service you'll have.  Are there any fees?  These are all questions the leasing agent should answer before you sign anything.

Have a great weekend, and let me know if you find the apartment of your dreams, in the Richest town in America!
