Funky Piece opening Bethesda location

Funky Piece, a smoke shop with an existing D.C. location and online store, is expanding to Bethesda. It is opening a new store at 7814 Old Georgetown Road, the vacant half of the former North China Restaurant space.

The company says the store will offer the same services as the D.C. location, but that the inventory will be somewhat different. A number of smoke and vaping stores across Montgomery County have closed since the County Council cracked down on e-cigarettes and vaping in 2015, just as the industry was taking off with booming sales. Expect the Council to take action on Juul pods next, once the notoriously out-of-touch councilmembers learn they exist.

Juul and plastic straws are sure to top the Council's "all we do is ban stuff" agenda in their next busy term...if you elect the next batch of minions from our corrupt local political cartel.

The Council wants to ban plastic straws?

Idiots. Just let a business decide if they want to spend money to offer them or not. For a lot of people, like children and elderly who have difficulty holding a glass steady, straws are vital.

I noticed restaurants lately asking if I want a straw instead of providing one automatically. That's an easy solution to the problem and doesn't require government intervention.

Everything is banned and yet a legal pot shop is welcomed with great fanfare. Smoke shop and pot. Hmm!

By the way, there's entire articles about the drinking straw fraud. The anti straw movement was started by a 9 year old. Yep, that's right. Look it up. Not surprisingly, it was junk science no pun intended.

Here is what is "banned" -

-Vaping/smoking e-cigarettes where smoking other tobacco products is prohibited.

-Styrofoam food containers.

-Use of wild animals in performances.

-Use of tanning beds by minors.

That's hardly "everything".

-Plastic drinking straws are NOT banned in Montgomery County.

-Plastic shopping bags are NOT banned in Montgomery County.

You can use paper or metal straws. Plastic straws are bad for the environment and should be banned. Why do people have such a hard time with this idea. You can still use a straw if you must.

5:55am the sign has not been up for "at least a week"

Stop lying.

Saith Dyer: "A number of smoke and vaping stores across Montgomery County have closed since the County Council cracked down on e-cigarettes and vaping in 2015, just as the industry was taking off with booming sales."

Which stores closed other than Fogden? All of the other local stores you have reported on are still open - Bethesda Vapor Store, the e-cigarettes in Signature Cigars, and the e-cigarettes in the cigar store in Montgomery Mall.

Fogden promoted themselves primarily as a head shop (like Funky Slice) rather than a vape shop. It seems that the actual reason Fogden closed was because they had an incredibly shady vibe - completely blacked out windows, and did not make it clear what product they were actually selling.

6:32AM - You're right, there are re-usable metal straws and single use paper straws that work for most people. That work for most drinks. But not all.

Not everyone has that "choice."
That paper straw doesn't work that well with Slurpees or shakes.

Oh goodie, now Bob the Builder doesn't have to go the head shop near Woodmont Deli to get his rolling papers. Wonder if the American Flag Window washer is dealing to Bob?

Well now, that's really informative. How will the inventory in the Bethesda store differ from the DC store? What products will the Bethesda store carry that the DC store doesn't, and vice versa?

Here is what Robert Dyer's ancestors were doing 122 years ago.

@Anna - Considerations need to be taken for those who rely on straws due to health reasons. (Those with disabilities, people who suffer from cerebral palsy, etc.) And you're right that paper straws and metal straws don't work for everyone. One solution I like is the use of biodegradable straws made from vegetable-based plastics. They have the heft, durability, and feel of plastic, but they decompose in landfills. Seems like companies would be better off investing in those.

For those who don't NEED straws but do like them, silicone or metal straws are great! I have a little cloth "holster" for my straw that keeps it clean in my purse, and it also fits the small brush I use to scrub it. Its a small thing, sure, but it makes me feel better that I'm reducing my share of single-use plastics.

Dyer: "Funky Piece, a smoke shop...A number of smoke and vaping stores across Montgomery County have closed since the County Council cracked down on e-cigarettes and vaping in 2015."

Funky Place: "FUNKYPIECE IS PROUD TO BE THE TOP SMOKE SHOP IN THE WASHINGTON, DC AREA. FROM HIGH QUALITY BONGS AND DAB RIGS, TO HEADY ONE-OF-A-KIND GLASS PIECES, TO BAGS AND STORAGE, AND THE MOST DIVERSE AND EXPANSIVE ROLLING PAPER SELECTION IN THE CITY, FUNKYPIECE GUARANTEES WE HAVE SOMETHING FOR EVERY SMOKER'S NEEDS" [all-caps per original]

Hint to Dyer: Funky Place is not focused primarily on people who want to vape tobacco.

Also, why no coverage of the Dispensary that's opening on Fairmont Avenue?

@Suze: biodegradable straws seem like the perfect idea.

The amount of microplastic debris in our waters is staggering. And then the fish and crustaceans...yikes.
Don't even get me started on the frightening things that fleece is doing.

5:55: False. I've been past there in that time. The sign just went up, and you got dunked on by Dyer. I notice Dyer's critic tells more lies per week than Trump.

"you got dunked on by Dyer."

What does this mean?

5:05... in your mind, what could that possibly mean other than this:

My boy Tarnation MFing Bob leaped from the foul line at full speed, jammed his crotch in your face as you stood there paralyzed with fear and guilty admiration, and slamma jamma'd the basketball of Bethesda retail activity into the hoop, securing victory not only for the suburban news network but also his own campaign for county council!!!!!!

Henceforth let it be known, this Bobhead (unofficial t. bob fan club nomenclature, if you have suggestions for better ideas for a name, sound off in the comments below) will no longer tolerate ANY bobby D slander on this page! Bob is the man with the plan, he's the underdog with a heart of gold, and there is nobody on the planet with whom I would rather entrust the fate of our humble hamlet. TARNATION BOB RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
