Lightning strikes cause power outages in Bethesda

UPDATE: A tree has fallen across the CSX railroad tracks in Garrett Park

An electrical storm with an unusual amount of cloud-to-ground lightning hit Montgomery County around 7:30 tonight, leaving downed trees and power outages in its wake. About 1000 customers are without power at this time. The outages largely correspond to the locations where bolts of lightning were seen touching down during the storm.

Outages were initially located primarily in the River Road and Bradley Boulevard corridors of Bethesda, as well as one in Brookmont. However, outage reports surged after the storm passed, and are now widespread across Bethesda. A major outage covers a wide area between River Road and Democracy Boulevard.

Trees have been reported falling on Harrogate Road, Renshaw Drive, Greentree Road, Crane Terrace, and Alcott Road, and several on Woodhaven Boulevard alone near Bradley, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Pete Piringer.

River Road is flooded at Counselman Road in Potomac; avoid that area.

Thank you, Robert.

Has power been restored to these areas?

Have all the roads blocked by flooding or downed trees been reopened?

5:23: No, Soy Boy, they are permanently flooded and closed. Better stay in your safe space, snowflake.

5:48 - What does asking if roads are still closed have to do with your fear of not being manly enough? You got some weird issues, Anonymous @5:48.

Looks like one house had like 3 trees fall on it. That really sucks, and will be a problem for quite a while. I can attest to that. A few years back a neighbor's tree fell into one of my trees and both came down on my house. Sigh...it sucked.
