Bethesda outdoor dining tents draw sparse numbers so far

Dining tent in Veterans Park

The first few days of outdoor dining tents in downtown Bethesda have found a limited number of takers so far. Use has been sparse in most cases, and temperatures have been unpleasantly frigid in these first days. Medium Rare's heated tents on Fairmont Avenue seem to be one of the exceptions, appearing quite busy over the weekend.

Veterans Park

A new tent in Veterans Park has been erected to expand the number of restaurants that can benefit from whoever is willing to use it. It was empty Saturday night. Social media reaction to the idea of outdoor tents being safer than indoor restaurants that have air filtration and circulation systems has been largely skeptical. Health authorities at all levels appear hesitant to weigh in on the topic with an authoritative declaration about their safety.

I am trying to patronize local establishments. However, even when the weather was nice, that outdoor eatery is uninviting. It feels weird sitting in the middle of street with people going by watching you eat.

If nobody much uses the streetery, including those tents, they are hurting rather than helping.
