That entire section will be next to be blown up. Big building or two coming soon no doubt.
A former Sir Walter Raleigh Inn!
They're an old suburban institution, because they occupy a niche in the steak house spectrum (somewhere between the cheap cafeteria-style chains and the pricey downtown palaces).
The decor at the inns was stamped out of the same colonial cookie cutter: the white frame "house" exterior with the electric candles in the imitation upstairs windows.
Prices, especially if you consider the impressive salad bar that's included with the meal, are moderate. True, you'll find more flavorful beef served in the larger downtown restaurants, but the Sir Walter Raleighs delivered a very good cost-quality compromise.
I, too, have fond memories of Sir Walter Raleigh Inn, though more so the Wheaton branch. Both the pricing and quality were closer to the high end than low end. Speaking of cheap cafeteria-style steak house, do any still exist in the DC metro area? I believe NYC mainstay, Tad's, just bit the dust. Oh well, I'm too old to partake of such fare anymore.
