Maryland Governor Wes Moore was in Montgomery County Thursday for a Purple Line ceremony, but made time for an extended visit to Max's Best Ice Cream at 7770 Woodmont Avenue in downtown Bethesda. He presented the ice cream parlor with a Governor's Citation recognizing the work the business is doing, in conjunction with Best Buddies and the Walt Whitman High School Learning for Independence program, to provide employment opportunities for members of the community with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Moore also joined the staff to learn a thing or two himself about how the treats are made in the kitchen at Max's.
The staff had a final surprise for the governor, when they presented him with the limited-edition Give Me Moore Old Bay Sundae. With the iconic Tastee Diner in the background, Moore handed out spoons so the staff could share in the enjoyment of his namesake dessert. The sundae features a warm, house-made brownie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, Old Bay caramel sauce, Old Bay-coated honey roasted peanuts, Fisher's (of course!) Old Bay Caramel Popcorn, whipped cream, and a handmade chocolate crab.

Seriously--although it looks as though (from the traffic cone in the photo) parking spaces were blocked off outside the restaurant (and there was certainly a security presence outside, and the visit was probably not announced in advance), I'm surprised that they let the Governor sit with his back to a big window like that. Given the security incidents involving other high-profile politicians, that doesn't sound like a good idea.
Well, Max's is a really fun spot and the product is excellent. A tad pricey maybe but quality ingredients cost. I hope they are around for a long time. And their partnership with Best Buddies is terrific. As for Moore and PL, yawn.
Well, statistically, it's the left that carries out overt violence & mayhem so Moore is pretty safe.

While much of the lively nightlife has exited Bethesda, on a Summer evening, Max's and the ice cream store at Bethesda Row are where all the activity is.
5:03 - Henry's served Graeter's ice cream from the Midwest which is very high quality and available in stores here. Max''s is the only ice cream shop that serves ice cream made from a dairy in DE which is very high quality as well. The atmosphere is a nod to the ice cream parlors of old. Tons of teenage kids in there Friday night even after 9:30 PM.
