Kenwood Sunoco reopens in Bethesda

Kenwood Sunoco

Bethesda Exxon station demolished as long-delayed redevelopment begins (Photos)

Heavy machinery has made short work of the long-shuttered Exxon gas station at 7340 Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda. The station building and garage, and the brick walls around the property, are now piles of rubble on the prime site above the Bethesda Metro station. After years of delay, developer Greystar broke ground last month on its planned redevelopment of the site into a mixed-use tower.  The future building will include 315,000 gross square feet of development, 300 to 308 residential units, ground floor retail, and around 158 parking spaces. It will sit near the entrance to the Purple Line light rail, and between two entrances to Metro's Red Line subway.

Gas is pumping again at Old Georgetown Road Exxon in Bethesda

The new gas tanks have been filled, and the new gas pumps activated, at the Exxon at 7975 Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda. It took four months to complete the underground work, during which time the business owner could only rely on sales from the convenience store at the gas station for revenue. Drivers will be energized to see the gas prices lit up once again on the digital sign. About the actual prices...not so much. But "last gas" before the Beltway, and one of the last gas stations remaining in downtown Bethesda, can get away with "boardwalk prices."

Exxon gas tank project continues on Old Georgetown Road

Work continues on the underground fuel tank project at the Exxon gas station at 7975 Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda. This has been a months-long project that started in February. It must be costing the owner a fortune in lost gasoline sales. The convenience store at the station remains open for business during the work.

Bethesda Exxon renovations update (Photos)

The maintenance/replacement of the underground fuel tanks at the Exxon station at 7975 Old Georgetown Road appears to be wrapping up. Barricades have been removed from the property, but the fuel pumps are still taped off, and a pile of dirt remains to be removed. The convenience store at the station is open during the renovations. It won't be long before you'll be able to pay "last gas" boardwalk prices for Exxon fuels here again!

Old Georgetown Road Exxon fenced off in downtown Bethesda (Photos)

The Exxon gas station at 7975 Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda was fenced off last night. Signage was dark, and prices were no longer shown for the various grades of gas. An underground fuel tank maintenance firm vehicle is parked on-site. Tank Tech retrofits and relines, inspects and repairs fuel tanks.

This doesn't mean the station is closed permanently, as they may just be repairing or replacing the fuel tanks under the pump bays, as has happened at a number of stations which reopen days or weeks later. Large dirt piles can be seen within the fenced-in area.

Westbard Citgo gets new signage

The Westbard Citgo at 5335 Westbard Avenue in Bethesda has new signage. Fuel price displays are now digital, replacing the old manually-changed numbers. The space at the bottom that used to show the price for premium diesel fuel now is promotional space, which last evening was touting Citgo's TriCLEAN gasoline. According to the Citgo website, "TriCLEAN gasoline is an enhanced, custom-blended fuel that includes nitrogen-cleaning agents to keep vital engine parts clean for a smoother running engine."

Public meeting scheduled for proposed redevelopment of long-vacant Bethesda gas station

A developer has scheduled a public meeting to reveal its plans to redevelop a long-abandoned gas station atop the Bethesda Metro station at 7340 Wisconsin Avenue. Previous projects, including a senior housing development, have fallen through over the last decade. That has caused the prime piece of property to instead become a prominent eyesore in the heart of the business district. Now another opportunity to revitalize the site has emerged.

The new proposal includes up to 310 residential units with ground floor retail, for a total of 315,000 square feet of development. Current zoning allows a maximum height of 250', but with additional height available in exchange for amenities or provision of affordable units beyond the required minimum.

Representatives of the developer will present the plan at a virtual public meeting on July 12, 2022 at 7:00 PM. See the sign pictured above for the codes needed to join the meeting.

Westbard Citgo demolished (Photos)

The Citgo gas station at 5471 Westbard Avenue in Bethesda was demolished Thursday. It and the adjacent Westwood Center II mini-mall are being razed to clear the way for an assisted-living senior housing development. The longtime service station was owned for 43 years by the late Carlos Bonds, and had a loyal customer base in the community; it was also the only station in the area to offer a full-service gas pump lane. A second Citgo station at 5335 Westbard remains open for business.

Bethesda gas prices spiking, but far from the worst in America

A check of gas prices around Bethesda as we reach the middle of the week reflects the same inflation being felt by Americans at gas pumps nationwide. Prices are inching up hourly. The $4.69 price you see in the photograph above at Liberty on Bradley Boulevard at 10:00 PM last night was already a few cents more than it was Tuesday morning. Who has the cheapest gas in Bethesda? The Navy Exchange at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where regular is going for $3.85 a gallon - but you can only fill up there if you hold credentials to get onto the base!

Overnight, the cash price for regular at Marathon on River Road was the cheapest in Bethesda for civilians at $4.15. In fact, River Road is the place to fill up in Bethesda, as all of the stations on that strip are beating the downtown gas stations: $4.17 at Liberty, $4.20 at Mobil, $4.20 at Shell, and $4.22 at Sunoco. Keep in mind that those prices may have gone up slightly by the time you get to the station.

Of course, drivers in some regions of the country would probably kill to have prices that low right now. KSBW reported one of the highest prices heard nationwide from Gorda, California, where every gallon is costing drivers $7.59.
