Utility work adds to traffic woes around Bethesda Row

Utility work being performed by Washington Gas yesterday added to increasing traffic problems around Bethesda Row. The Bethesda Streetery closure of Woodmont Avenue between Elm Street and Bethesda Avenue has not only impacted traffic circulation to businesses and parking facilities, but has also reduced the number of street parking spaces. It was not as much of an issue during the spring lockdown, but as increasing numbers of people have begun shopping and dining out in the ensuing months, traffic flow has been impacted - especially on Bethesda Avenue.

The Washington Gas crew was working on Woodmont and Elm near Equinox gym yesterday and last night. Because the closures of Elm east of that intersection, and of Woodmont south of it, everyone must already make a right turn to detour at that corner. Not surprisingly, with pedestrians crossing streets and a very short traffic signal cycle, traffic was snarled at times Saturday.

I believe much of this construction is in preparation to finally build the $4.8M Capital Crescent Surface Trail and separated bikeways along Bethesda and Woodmont Avenues.

And all the Biden nuts honking and waving flags in an embarrassing way add to the congestion.
