Bethesda cyclist struck in fatal crash on River Road

A cyclist was struck by a flatbed truck driver in the 5200 block of River Road around 4:00 PM this afternoon. The female victim suffered critical injuries, and was later pronounced dead at the scene, NBC4's Charlie Bragale tweeted. The collision occurred in the vicinity of Beacon Building Products. River Road was closed between Ridgefield Road and Little Falls Parkway for accident reconstruction. The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene, Allison Papson of Fox 5 reports.

Awful tragedy. But county officials won't waste anytime to politize this tragic accident and move to further restrict River Road as they already have in recent times.

Saw the traffic backed up on River and wondering what happened. Sorry to the family.

The irony and lack of self-awareness demonstrated by this comment would be comical if it weren't so gross.

I'm sure the politicians will act before the investigation is done and all the facts are in.

For example, there was the fatal bicycle crash on Little Falls Parkway, near the Bethesda pool. The immediately cut the road down to 1 lane each way (it's still that way), even though the investigation revealed the cyclist was at fault -- they ignored a stop sign.

You would think that area around Talbert's was the friggin center of the universe with the sheer volume of traffic that speeds past there.

8:04 - Not gross at all but a harsh reality. This will result in a knee jerk reaction to a death while tragic obviously. They have a track record or have you been out of town and not realized the silliness of Little falls Pkwy and Old Gtwn Rd?

8:23 - precisely and others call similar comments gross.

Get ready for the speed cameras.... Because of course.

Definitely need speed enforcement on River Rd.
On the other hand, the new 20mph speed limits with speed bumps is silly. Why would that pkwy have a lower speed limit than narrow residential neighborhood streets?

I am the farthest thing from a leftie but have to say that there is a problem in that area Westwood/River Rd. Too many vehicles. MoCo is trying to dissuade folks from driving their vehicles around there by making it more inconvenient. I agree. I stopped driving my car into DC as they made it clear, through ubiquitous red light/speed cameras and parking tickets, that they did not want to see my car in there. I took the hint.

On 7:36 am I was referring to the little Falls pkwy 20 mph speed limit. Seems weird to be lower speed limit than a residential street

The most notable fact in this tragic accident is that the cyclist was riding her bike in a designated bike lane. There's really no need to do anything along this stretch because the reality is that accidents and tragedies are going to happen no matter what. They had painted bike lanes and this woman was riding properly in that lane but was hit anyway. How bout the driver? Any charges there pending? I may have missed that part. Impaired? On his device while driving? It's awful and yes, many business people there have told me over the years that there are crashes all the time. But they've reduced the speed limit just beyond Kenwood Country Club yet few seem to obey that limit. I've said it before that if you want cameras (and I don't) make the ticket $200 per speed infraction. That'll slow people down quick. This was an accident and they do happen period.

This is an example of how the Left, when faced with obvious facts, simply refuse to see them, and plow on with their agenda no matter the results - or consequences.

I'll say it again, the government is somewhat complicit in this because of their policies which give people a false sense of safety. Then again, a woman darted into Wisconsin in front of me this morning, but pulled back quickly since she was going to jaywalk and the cars would have had no chance to stop. Accept some personal responsibility, people, keep your head on a swivel.
