The Christopher Condominium in Bethesda installs brighter lighting for safety (Photos)

Bethesda, like all of Montgomery County, has been experiencing a surge in crime for the last four years. Over that time, the Montgomery County Council has largely left residents and commercial property owners to fend for themselves against the criminals preying on the community. One approach has been to install brighter lighting around properties, whether they be homes or shopping centers. We've seen this recently at Bethesda Row and at Kenwood Station. The latest is The Christopher Condominium at 4808 Moorland Lane in downtown Bethesda, where brighter lighting has just been added to the entrance staircase on Woodmont Avenue.

At least part of the "safety" concern addressed by the increased lighting might not be crime-related, but instead about people's being able to walk up or down those stairs at night without tripping/falling (especially if they're older and/or disabled; or, if someone left some trash or other object(s) on the stairs).
Probably a cost-effective move, either way (or both ways), on the part of the building's owner, in terms of avoiding liability.

These were installed for safety and to replace the lights that were already there for 30 years but wore out.

Considering the lights are 6 inches off the ground it's pretty obviously about the safety of not falling down the stairs at night.

Somebody should name a condominium/apartment building "The Columbo," and have the entrance/exit include a revolving door, on each push-bar of which is engraved, "Oh, just one more thing. . . ."
(For you youths, that's a reference to vintage tv.)

or... and hear me out... they replaced 30 year old lights with new LEDs, which are brighter and save energy.
Not everything is related to 2nd degree assault!
