A contractor has completed installation of new lighting above Bethesda Lane at Bethesda Row. Property owner Federal Realty has promised the new fixtures, which replace the iconic stringed light bulbs above the pedestrian street, will provide "improved lighting for selfies." They resemble the ring lights popular among YouTube creators and Instagram and TikTok influencers, but whether the effect is the same from above the subject as it is straight ahead is debatable. Other work around Bethesda Row continues, including replacement of pavers on Bethesda Lane, a sidewalk project on Elm Street, and a new fountain plaza outside Anthropologie.

Now that Bethesda Lane's all selfie-friendly, will they be installing a security camera (assumine none is there already) the way someone just put one in at the Norfolk Avenue Streetery?
Any word on whose camera that one is, and what use (real-time? reviewing later, only?) will be made of those images, and by whom?
Shouldn't whoever's responsible for the Norfolk Avenue one, on public property, add a sign/notice, even on the side of the camera's foundation, to explain any of this?

This is all about bracing for future crime.
Signage for camera notification is a delicate issue; if they do notify they bear some responsibility to be available for investigation s and arguably might appear to provide safety and open themselves to litigation.
Let’s use these cameras to post pics of the future shoplifting and assault perps in these areas so we know who to be on the lookout for.
Anti crime lighting was a concession after Nike signed the lease.
At least now we'll all be able to better see the criminals the County is failing to stop and arrest.
