Lidl has opened at 7625 Old Georgetown Road at Bethesda Place in downtown Bethesda. There were free German pretzels in the bakery, and many Supermarket Finds-worthy products to be found in the store's middle aisle area. T-shirts, underwear, and even $12 sneakers can be acquired there, as well as an outdoor projector and a screen to project onto. A comparison chart shows that you could save over $20 shopping at Lidl over Giant, based on the basket of common items they selected. Of course, the trade-off is that the selection of brands and food items is much larger at Giant. Low prices, a tight inventory, and seasonal German items are the top draws at Lidl, now finally here in Bethesda.

I asked about the adjacent former Peet’s Coffee shop and learned that it will become a Coffee Republic cafe and bakery, and will be directly connected to the Lidl store check out area. It will be nice to see that curved corner and large outdoor seating area activated again. They said it will open in January. With the Shake Shack coming to the Element 28 building nearby, this area is getting some nice improvements.
Aldi is cheaper than Lidl, but Lidl has fresh bakery. Lidl sometimes offers very good cheap razors.
Always like some German pretzels!
It was better than I expected, they had the one brand item I went in there for, Giant be damned! Bright lighting & lots of security...
Of course Aldi is cheaper. That’s because they don’t have 50% Named Brand Items like Lidl does !
I’ll take Lidl !!
I was skeptical if this Store would work in Bethesda. But I went in there and saw everything and now I think they will fit in just Fine !
We actually now have a very high quality discount grocer in Bethesda, that I think will take lots of business away from that nearby aging safeway and may even nibble a bit at that Harris Teeter up the street !
Here is Lidl’s secret: Half their items are Named Brands, unlike Aldi and Trader Joe’s……..
I like the Compromise between Named Brands and Smaller Private and Independent Labels. Works for Me !!
Thank You for reminding me that Shake Shack is coming. That will beat driving all the way up to Cabin John Village Center on nice days !
Running shoes/sneakers?!? Lidl's all in! :-)
The Older Giant and the Aging Safeway on Arlington Rd should be worried. I was in the NEW Lidl yesterday and it won’t take much for them to beat out Giant or Safeway on some Items. And they have some named Brands, unlike Aldi and Trader Joe’s !
This NEW Lidl Store cannot easily be dismissed. It’s actually pretty high end for a Discount Grocer and surrounding Grocery Stores in Bethesda better take notice………Lidl (with their Named Brand Items) will be a formidable competitor.
One Last Thing………Lidl has a Great Thick Cut Pork Chops !! I always have a hard time finding those in other grocery stores………or they aren’t so thick in competitor's stores.
I need me some some $13.00 sneakers!!
Well, Publix beats them all but they won't come this far North.
