St. Elmo Deli closed in Bethesda

St. Elmo Deli
at 4818 St. Elmo Avenue in Bethesda was closed during normal Monday business hours today, March 24, 2025. The interior appears largely cleared out. There's no seating, shelves (such as where you would typically see chip bags lined up) are empty, and the menu displays have been taken down. Signage is still up out front, but there's no note to customers explaining the reason for the closure. St. Elmo Deli has been around since 1997 - an impressive, almost thirty-year run - so it would be sad if this is a permanent closure.

Bethesda buildings light up for St. Patrick's Day (Photos)

Downtown Bethesda may not have any Irish pubs, or a St. Patrick's Day parade, but that didn't stop some of its buildings from showing some holiday spirit Monday. As day turned into night, three buildings went green. Avocet Tower, and the Hyatt Regency Bethesda, which face each other across Wisconsin Avenue by the Bethesda Metro station, both switched their accent lighting to green. A new entry in the theme-lighting competition is the venerable Landow Building. Its new entrance apparently also includes customizable lighting on the inside, which took on a shamrock hue Monday night.

New-look entrance for Landow Building in Bethesda (Photos)

The Woodmont Avenue entrance to the Landow Building has a new look. An understated yet more-contemporary design is capped off by a sleek glass canopy. Located at 7910 Woodmont Avenue, the Landow Building was constructed in 1971, and renovated in 1990. Developer Nathan Landow of Landow & Company is recognized for several distinctive buildings in Bethesda, including the resort hotel-inspired The Seasons apartments and Fairmont Plaza condos, and the luxury-cruise-ship-like Promenade on Pooks Hill.

Major work at the Landow Building in Bethesda (Photos)

There are some major repairs or renovations going on at the Landow Building at 7910 Woodmont Avenue in downtown Bethesda again. A year ago, a complex structures review of post-tension modifications to the 2nd-floor concrete slab was conducted at the property. Windows on the second floor were then boarded up, and work on a new lobby entrance canopy was to begin. Fast forwarding to yesterday, the sidewalk on Woodmont Avenue was closed, as a crew was performing extensive work in that area of the building.

Landow Building work continues in Bethesda

Here's an update on the project at the Landow Building at 7910 Woodmont Avenue in downtown Bethesda. The main lobby entrance remains closed, where a new canopy will be installed over the doors. However, work has expanded to the second story facade and windows, which have been boarded up. I will have to open the floor to one of our resident construction experts in the comments to maybe shed light on whether that has anything to do with the 2nd floor concrete slab issues, which were to be inspected as part of the work.

Landow Building entrance update (Photos)

The main entrance of the Landow Building at 7910 Woodmont Avenue is still closed. Now there is a wooden construction barrier around it and the 2nd floor area just above it. A new canopy is being installed over the entrance, and the second-floor concrete slab is being inspected. Visitors are being directed to the St. Elmo Avenue building entrance.

Landow Building main entrance temporarily closed in Bethesda

The main lobby entrance to the Landow Building at 7910 Woodmont Avenue is temporarily closed. Visitors are being directed to the St. Elmo Avenue entrance to the building. According to the posted permit, a complex structures review of post-tension modifications to the 2nd floor concrete slab is being conducted (maybe one of our construction expert readers can elaborate on what that means in the comments). Construction of a new canopy will also be part of the project. The modern office building is one of the jewels in the Nathan Landow real estate crown in Bethesda, along with The Promenade, Fairmont Plaza, Crescent Plaza, and The Seasons.

The Landow Building, the landmark office tower at the corner of Woodmont and St. Elmo Avenues, has finally signed a tenant for the vacant Tone on Tone corner retail space. Weichert Realtors will take over the spot at 7920 Woodmont Avenue.

Kathleen Matthews campaign office in Landow Building?

I noticed this sign on the door of the Landow Building in downtown Bethesda - maybe a campaign office or just a one-time event for the congressional campaign of Kathleen Matthews? Her website doesn't mention an office address.

Former Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown had one in a retail space on Wisconsin Avenue in the nearby Fairmont Plaza condo building in 2014. Both buildings were developed by prominent Democratic contributor Nathan Landow, who has built quite a few nice ones downtown, as well as the resort-like Promenade at Pooks Hill.

College Nannies and Tutors moving to Landow Building in downtown Bethesda (Photos)

One reader had asked where the tenants of the soon-to-be-demolished office building at 4962 Fairmont Avenue are going. I've found where one is headed. College Nannies and Tutors is moving to the nearby Landow Building.

College Tutors and Nannies offers just what the name implies - child care nannies, and one-on-one tutoring and test preparation.

You can learn more about their staff on their website.

4962 Fairmont is coming down to make room for the 4990 Fairmont luxury condo tower, being developed by Duball, LLC. It's always good to hear that a small business affected by the booming real estate market was able to locate a new space in the same neighborhood.

The Woodmont Avenue entrance to the Landow Building in downtown Bethesda has reopened, after closing temporarily for renovations. Now the St. Elmo entrance has closed.

LANDOW BUILDING ENTRANCE TEMPORARILY CLOSED IN BETHESDA (PHOTOS)

The Woodmont Avenue entrance of the Landow Building is temporarily closed for renovations. Tenants and visitors are being directed to the St. Elmo Avenue entrance. This is one of several buildings developed by Nathan Landow in Bethesda. What you'll notice in his buildings are the upscale finishes, and the resort hotel design elements he incorporates into his residential towers (including Fairmont Plaza, The Seasons, and the cruise ship-esque Promenade).

BROTHERS SEW AND VAC MOVES INTO NEW BETHESDA LOCATION (PHOTOS)

Brothers Sew & Vac has moved into its new location in the ground floor of the Landow Building, along St. Elmo Avenue. And, yes, they brought "Grandma" along.

If you live in the Woodmont Triangle, and your vacuum cleaner just fizzled out for the last, you may be in luck - "sales and service" in walking distance. Assuming you're going to lug that thing along the sidewalks.

CREATIVE PARTIES, LTD MAY BE MOVING - ACROSS THE STREET (PHOTOS)

I have good, solid evidence that party-throwing/planning headquarters Creative Parties, LTD may move to another downtown Bethesda location.

Although there has been no official announcement, CP might soon move from its current home at 8011 Woodmont Avenue across the way to a ground-level storefront in the posh Landow Building, at 4822 St. Elmo Avenue.

While we're awaiting word, you may want to stop by their current location, as they're having a sale.
