Redwood demolition update (Photos)

Demolition is going forward full steam inside the former anchor restaurant space of Redwood on Bethesda Lane. Left behind is an apocalyptic interior moonscape. As I previously reported, Federal Realty plans to divide the large space into several smaller storefronts to be leased separately.

Redwood was one of several victims of the corrupt Montgomery County Council's failure to require developers to provide a replacement theater after the nearby Regal Cinemas closed in December 2016. A study showed a mainstream cineplex brings an average of 20,000 extra visitors to an area per weekend, 20,000 people who have now relocated their weekend adventures to other destinations besides downtown Bethesda.

Official: Redwood is out at Bethesda Row

The fairly obvious has now become official. Redwood Restaurant & Bar, closed since the beginning of January, will not be reopening at Bethesda Row. Their space will be divided into three new storefronts, of 1264, 1430 and 4937 SF, respectively, and are now available for lease.

The largest one is the only of the spaces that could fit a sit-down restaurant; the other two could serve as take-out fast casual or retail spaces. Property owner Federal Realty has previously stated they will favor retail over dining in the short term at the development, but ultimately the market will decide what goes in here.

As many had begun to surmise, the so-called "pipe burst" work going on inside the space over the last few months was actually getting it ready for subdivision and leasing to three new tenants. Rumors of Redwood's exit had been forwarded to me by three different sources beginning last September, but the restaurant did not comment when asked about the reports.

Redwood repairs moving slowly at Bethesda Row (Photos)

Redwood Restaurant & Bar at 7121 Bethesda Lane remains closed, after an exploding pipe caused apparently-extensive water damage throughout the restaurant. Two months have passed, and the restaurant has ceased posting updates on social media. They had advertised a Valentine's Day event, but failed to finish and reopen in time, and did not retract the ads for the romantic evening. No word if any couples broke up that night as a result...
The work appears more extensive than the damage visible from the exterior suggested. As you can see, the dining room walls appear completely demolished, as if a whole new business were being constructed from scratch.

Redwood still closed at Bethesda Row from New Year's pipe burst (Photos)

Redwood still hasn't reopened since a pipe burst got 2018 off to a soggy start for the Bethesda Lane restaurant. They haven't posted any updates on the remediation since January 9, the same day they also promised to host a Valentine's Day Four Course Dinner, which means they've got about a week to finish the job. Stay tuned!

Redwood still battling to reopen after pipe floods Bethesda Row restaurant

Redwood Restaurant and Bar on Bethesda Lane remained closed yet another night. A new sign posted offers a conflicting message to the more optimistic one currently on their Facebook page.

The sign says they now hope to reopen "early next week" (which is now early this week, given that today is Sunday). They say a remediation crew is scheduled to work inside the restaurant until then. Last night, coiled hoses were visible on the floor of the dining room.

There is one bit of good news - Redwood is promising free soup when they reopen. With these temperatures, I'm sure many will be taking them up on that offer.

Redwood watch continues on Bethesda Lane

Redwood Restaurant and Bar was closed again last night on Bethesda Lane, after being closed two previous days due to a burst water pipe. A wet-dry vac could be seen inside the dining room last night.

There is a schedule posted on the Redwood website showing the hours they will be open each day through January 7. No explanation is given, and they were actually not open on January 3 and 4, contrary to the hours shown for those evenings. According to the schedule, they will be open regular hours today and tonight, so we'll have to see what happens.

Barnes & Noble reopens, Redwood closed again last night (Photos)

Barnes & Noble reopened as scheduled yesterday morning, following what the store termed a "heat outage." B&N is still scheduled to close on January 11, and a closing sale is underway. Meanwhile, Redwood was not able to reopen yesterday, following a burst pipe on Monday. They will try again today, according to an employee.

TACO THERAPY LUNCH POP-UP AT REDWOOD IN BETHESDA (PHOTO)

You could win a taco lunch for 10 at Redwood on Bethesda Lane next week. Just stop in during lunch hours (11:30-2:30) between Monday, April 7 and Friday, April 11, order one of the tacos on the menu below, and fill out the contest entry form.

With the April 7 launch of Taco Therapy at Redwood, and the opening of Gringos & Mariachis on Cordell Avenue recently, upscale tacos are trending in downtown Bethesda. At Redwood, premium taco fillings like Filet Mignon, pork belly, rotisserie chicken and daily fresh seafood make the $4 cost not bad for lunch. You can also go gluten-free with their corn tortilla option.

The taco pop-up menu will be available in the bar.

Here's the taco menu (click to enlarge for detail):

JULY IS PICNIC MONTH AT BETHESDA ROW

One-stop picnic shopping is available all this month at Bethesda Row, on Bethesda Lane.

First, invite someone to a picnic. Second, scout out a place to have the picnic.

But, most importantly, get the food and beverage for the picnic.

Stop by Redwood, and order one of their picnic baskets for two, for just $30.

Have them add your choice of Fried Chicken, St. Louis BBQ Ribs, or Smoked Beef Brisket.

Then choose Potato Salad, or Macaroni Salad.

Your basket will automatically include a mixed salad for two, and biscuits with honey spread.

You will also receive a coupon. Take this coupon across Bethesda Lane to Cork and Fork, and receive 10% off the perfect bottle of wine - of your choice.

It's National Picnic Month, and I've taken all the guesswork out of it for you.
