Original Connor Building Smoothie King to close July 30 in Bethesda

The original location of Smoothie King in the Connor Building will close July 30, 2016. If you're a Smoothie King fan, you probably already know that their new location is at 4710 Bethesda Avenue, and is there to stay.

A Westin hotel and office project that will replace the Connor Building and the motel next door has been delayed for several years. The moribund Montgomery County economy has reduced demand for both hotel business travel and office space.

Smoothie King grand opening this weekend

Don't forget about the Smoothie King grand opening celebration this weekend at their new Bethesda Avenue store. The shop has been open for a while, but the celebration starts today with a $5 medium smoothie special, and continues all weekend. Here are the details.

SMOOTHIE KING GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION MARCH 27-29

The new Bethesda Avenue Smoothie King, which opened last month, will officially celebrate its Grand Opening on March 27, 28, and 29. 

On all three days, kids can get a free Kids' Cup smoothie with the purchase of one Kids' Cup smoothie, all merchandise in the store will be 20% off, they'll be giving away balloons and t-shirts, and there will be raffles to win prizes from local businesses.

On the 27th only, there will be a $5 medium smoothie special to kick off the weekend.

BETHESDA AVE. SMOOTHIE KING OPENING WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14

Opening day is finally set for Wednesday (tomorrow) at the new Smoothie King at 4710 Bethesda Avenue, Store Manager Jock Garcia tells me. For a sneak peek of the interior, check out my report from December 22. The shop replaces Zen Tara Tea.

BETHESDA CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: SMOOTHIE KING OPENING POSTPONED TO JANUARY (PHOTOS)

While Smoothie King's interior looks close to ready for opening day at 4710 Bethesda Avenue, that opening has been postponed until January. Smoothie King will be in the former Zen Tara Tea space in the Seasons building. It has an existing location still operating in the Connor Building off of Woodmont Avenue, which will eventually be demolished for the Westin Bethesda hotel project.

SMOOTHIE KING POSTS PERMANENT SIGN ON BETHESDA AVENUE (PHOTOS)

The permanent, lighted sign is now up over the storefront at the future location of Smoothie King at 4710 Bethesda Avenue. It is scheduled to open this month. Smoothie King is moving from its current Connor Building location nearby to make way for the Westin Bethesda hotel and office building project.

SMOOTHIE KING OPENING ABOUT 8 WEEKS AWAY ON BETHESDA AVENUE (PHOTOS)

A spokesperson for Smoothie King said Tuesday that its new Bethesda Avenue store opening is about 2 months away. The new store will replace the existing location, which is being demolished for a massive Westin Hotel and office building project on Wisconsin Avenue. Smoothie King will be at 4710 Bethesda Avenue, in the Seasons apartment building.

SMOOTHIE KING POSTS COMING SOON SIGN AT NEW BETHESDA LOCATION (PHOTOS)

Smoothie King has posted "Coming Soon" signage in a vacant storefront on Bethesda Avenue. The shop will move to the former Zen Tara Tea space at 4710 Bethesda Avenue. Its current Connor Building location will be demolished to make way for a Westin hotel and office complex.

I'm afraid Smoothie King's biggest moment in Bethesda history was not beverage-related. Rather, it was the infamous Smoothie King armed robbery, executed with aplomb by the now-legendary Whitman Five gang. As in Walt Whitman High School. Uno's Pizzeria. A Vera Bradley handbag. And an actual getaway car.
