BETHESDA OUTDOOR MOVIES!

Summer is just around the corner.  In downtown Bethesda, that means - among other things - outdoor movies.

There are two annual outdoor movie festivals in Bethesda, one sponsored by the Bethesda Urban Partnership in "Old Town" Bethesda, and a second at Bethesda Row.

Mark your calendars - or tell Siri - for the evenings of July 24 through July 28 at 9:00 pm.  That's when Bethesda UP will host its outdoor movie spectacular at the corner of Norfolk and Auburn Avenues.

Here is the 2012 lineup of movies:

Tuesday, July 24:  Stand By Me

Wednesday, July 25:  Vertigo

Thursday, July 26:  The Muppets (the recent one)

Friday, July 27:  Crazy Stupid Love

Saturday, July 28:  Hugo

Bring your own chair (BYOC).  You can also bring food from any one of the many restaurants nearby.  I would personally suggest hot dogs from Bold Bite, or lobster rolls from Freddy's Lobster.

Admission is FREE!

Which movie is the best?  It would have to be Vertigo with Jimmy Stewart, of course!

MONTGOMERY COUNTY BRT FACT VS. FICTION

Today at noon, some of the less than 20 people who have rammed the Montgomery County Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) plan through the "process" - with no formal public input to date - will yet again hold a press conference.

Elected officials and members of the BRT task force will tell you "how it's gonna be."  Everything has been decided behind closed doors.  No alternative has been presented, other than the plan they and campaign-contributing developers already had two years ago.

With Bethesda residents poised to pay $1000 a year or more in new taxes to fund the BRT boondoggle, I hope the local media will have tough questions at the press conference.  And not just accept the pie-in-the-sky-by-and-by hogwash the secretive BRT cabal has been serving up.

For a system that won't work, won't be ridden, will take money from Metrorail, and will actually worsen congestion on roads, the time for tough questions is now.

Before the deluge of misinformation this afternoon, arm yourself with the facts.  As Thomas Jefferson once said, when the People have all the information, they'll make the right decision.

Instead of just accepting the BRT folly, review these articles that - for the first time - critique the BRT proposal:

The biggest question is, if all they are telling us about BRT is true, why won't they let the public weigh in on it?  And if they are so confident in their plan, why are they scared to debate it in the public arena?

Big news from American Tap Room at Bethesda Row:

You can now order half-price wine bottles Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights!

A number of restaurants have a half-price wine night.  One or two have it twice a week.

But American Tap Room is the first to offer it 3 nights a week!

K STREET KATE TAKES YOU BACKSTAGE AT THE FRONT ROW AT BETHESDA ROW

Sure, there are lots of pictures from The Front Row at Bethesda Row last week.

But only "K Street" Kate Michael went backstage during Friday night's fashion show.

She can, because not only is she a Miss DC, TV host, multimedia entrepreneur, etc., but also a professional model.

CORRIDOR CITIES TRANSITWAY: THE EMPEROR'S NEW BUS

FOLLY EXPOSED:
15 MILES IN 50 MINUTES

COST?
$828,000,000+!

Another Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row Exclusive!!!

Is it time for a new season of Last Comic Standing?  The Montgomery County Government sent out a press release Friday - or was it a draft of a standup comedy routine?

Touting Governor Martin O'Malley's approval of Bus Rapid Transit as the preferred mode for the Corridor Cities Transitway, it also included the first public citing of the estimated speed of the new service.

And if they keep this up, they're going to put Jerry Seinfeld out of business.

Now remember, the CCT was supposed to be light rail.  The County Council went on the record saying it had to be light rail.

And at a council debate in 2010, residents of Clarksburg warned the council that if the ride from Clarksburg to Shady Grove Metro on the CCT was too long, no one would waste time using it, and the whole project would be a waste of taxpayer money.

It turns out our elected officials have been dishonest on each of those points and promises.

Ladies and gentlemen, the travel time of the rapid bus CCT from Clarksburg to Shady Grove will be:

49 MINUTES

49 minutes!

Much like the proposed countywide BRT system, this is a complete and utter boondoggle.

Unlike the local media, which trumpeted the underwhelming CCT announcement with no skepticism or critical analysis, I immediately did some simple research on Google Maps.

Once I could stop laughing, that is.

First, I asked Google Maps how long it would take me to drive from Clarksburg to Shady Grove Metro.

Answer:  23 minutes by car.

So, how would you make the trip?  23 minutes, or 49?  Do you even have to think about it?

Wait, it gets even more hysterical!

What if you drove a few blocks south on 355 from Clarksburg, and conveniently parked your car at the Milestone Park and Ride lot, and took the Route 55 bus to Shady Grove?

33 minutes, says Google Maps.

So let's just consider this, folks:

Today, without spending a dime, there are driving options of 23 minutes, and transit options of 33 minutes.

Your county executive and council are proposing to spend $828 million (and you know that's going to increase as every other capital project does), for a bus that makes the same trip in... 49 minutes.

Am I making too much sense here, people?

Is that the poster stepchild of boondoggles and government waste or not?

What kind of spell is the local media under, that they accept this malarkey with no intellectual curiosity whatsoever?

The county also stated that a BRT trip from Metropolitan Grove to Shady Grove will take 33 minutes.

By car, it is 13 minutes!

This is downright crazy!

What's going on here?

The bottom line is that the council is putting its developer buddies ahead of fiscal responsibility, and the citizens of Montgomery County.

As you can tell from the numbers, the CCT will be anything but "rapid transit."  It will provide no meaningful benefit to citizens, while drawing scarce transportation money away from critical projects like the Purple Line, Midcounty Highway Extended (M-83) and the Rockville Freeway.

The M-83 serves the same purpose as the CCT for upcounty residents, but for less cost and shorter travel time.  Like the Rockville Freeway, the M-83 is far more likely to receive federal funding than the CCT; both highways would carry many times the number of commuters daily, a critical data point for winning federal funds.

We just heard Sunday about the increasingly bleak financing prospects of the Purple Line.  Why, in that context, would we waste a billion dollars on the CCT?

Simple.  Those developer buddies of the council I referred to earlier.

The sprawl of Science City cannot be fully built unless the CCT is built as well.

So you can understand why they would push forward with a BRT CCT, that any intelligent person with common sense can recognize is a complete disaster.

They just have to get it built, or the developers will cut off their campaign donations.

But if the developers want to build, they should pay for the CCT themselves.

This council is pushing a new model of financing, where the infrastructure burden switches from the profiteering developers, to you, the taxpayer.

They've rammed through 3 developer tax cuts just in this term of office.  One alone switched $72 million in tax burden from developers to residents and business owners.  Now they're working with the Planning Department, to reduce the amount developers have to spend to compensate for the traffic burden they add to county roads with each megaproject.

Beyond the financing issues, the BRT travel time proves why the CCT should have been a rail line.  By comparison, the MTA light rail that runs alongside the Jones Falls Expressway, makes its rush hour, inbound trip from Hunt Valley to the center of Baltimore in only 33 minutes.  That trip is 17 miles, 2 more miles than the CCT's route! The superiority of rail is obvious.

Rapid buses simply cannot provide the needed efficiency - to attract the needed ridership - to support the costly service.

But much like Metro in Tysons Corner, they're ramming it through anyway.  Do they expect people to use Metro at Tysons?  From the location of the stops, to the utter lack of commuter parking lots, the clear answer is, No!

The same Developer First logic is prevailing here.  Get something built that we can call a CCT, so the developers can make money.

Isn't it time for the media, the business community and the citizens to stand up and say the Emperor has no clothes?

A UFO HAS LANDED AT BETHESDA ROW

American Craft Beer Week is enough to get any self-respecting space alien turning his craft in an Earthward trajectory.

But wait?  Isn't ACBW over?  It's Sunday.

No point arguing.  Just head over to Ri-Ra immediately, where they have Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen on draft for just $4 all day and night today.

This UFO Hefeweizen does not have an overwhelming flavor, is light but cloudy like a German Hefeweizen would be, and is a perfect beer for today's weather.  In fact, with Ri-Ra's patio seating, you actually can enjoy it outdoors.

Speaking of German tradition, make sure you get a lemon or lemon slice with your UFO.

Prepare for a Beer Encounter of the Third Kind at Ri-Ra today.

Ri-Ra, 4931 Elm Street, Bethesda.  301-657-1122.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE "RICHIE"-RICH TO SHOP LIKE THE STARS AT BETHESDA ROW

CELEBRATE THE PREAKNESS IN BETHESDA AT MUSSEL BAR!

What happened to The Preakness this year?  The run-up to the race the last few years was filled with hype.

But the 2012 Preakness is this afternoon.  Where's all the hype?  Where is that half-man/half-donkey they used in the marketing last time?  Good riddance!

Oh, well.

You can be sure that I haven't forgotten about what is arguably the biggest sporting event in the state of Maryland.  Let's not forget that horse racing is "the sport of kings," after all!

As little has been heard about The Preakness, even less has been said about where to go in Bethesda to celebrate it.

I've come through for you again, in that regard!

Head to Mussel Bar at Bethesda Row this afternoon for their special Preakness cocktail:  The Black Eyed Susan!
The delicious and refreshing Black Eyed Susan

You can also order a Mint Julep!

Mussel Bar will add a third cocktail for the next race, the Belmont Stakes on June 11, providing a Triple Crown of cocktails.

No, it's not a new cupcake shop!

Icing is an accessories boutique for girls and young women.  It is located on the Lower Level, between Old Navy and the Center Court.

FREDDY'S LOBSTER CELEBRATES ONE YEAR IN DOWNTOWN BETHESDA!

This Saturday, May 19, Freddy's Lobster + Clams will be celebrating one year in downtown Bethesda.  Has it really been a year since Bethesda's first lobster roll restaurant opened its doors?

Just in time for the occasion, Freddy's completed a renovation of the front of its building and patio, bringing beachside atmosphere to Cordell Avenue.

Starting at noon Saturday, Freddy's will host a BBQ on the deck, a DJ and a live band, facepainting and balloons for kids, and - not surprisingly for one of the top beer lists in town - beer specials.

So stop by Freddy's.  If you can't afford to travel to the ocean and take advantage of the perfect weather this weekend, Freddy's will bring the ocean to you!

BETHESDA CENTRAL FARM MARKET CANCELED THIS SUNDAY

Shocker:  Sunday's Bethesda Central Farm Market has been abruptly canceled.

It turns out that the Bethesda Elementary School parking lot is needed for a school fundraiser, so BCFM and customers are just getting the boot from Montgomery County Government!

BCFM will return as usual to Bethesda ES next Sunday.

This weekend, they invite you to come out to their Saturday, May 19th Pike Central Market (9:00 am to 2:00 pm), located across from the White Flint Metro RED LINE, at the corner of Rockville Pike and Old Georgetown Road, in front of the Toys R Us.

Many favorite Bethesda farmers and vendors will be there!

MIA'S PIZZAS will, too - you don't want to miss that!

Walnut Hill Farm will have their 1st batch of pasture-raised broilers.

So, this weekend, PIKE CENTRAL on Saturday.

Next Sunday, back at Bethesda ES.

WORDS YOU NEVER WANT IN THE SAME SENTENCE: "BETHESDA METRO" "ELEVATOR CLOSED FOR 4 MONTHS" "SHUTTLE BUS"

(Insert scream here)

Apologists for Metro's failed leadership team have another disaster to explain away:  WMATA sent out an ominous press release yesterday, which says they will be taking the Bethesda Metro station street-to-mezzanine level elevator "out of service for approximately four months," starting late this month.

Great news for a station that is barely usable anymore, with escalators that constantly fail.  Of course, in the Orwellian world of Metro's leadership, and their go-along-to-get-along fans in the press, that is calculated as "90% reliability."  Yeah, right!

Yes, we know that elevators need work over time.  But why did they wait until it required a full overhaul, and when the escalators are failing?

Free shuttle service will be available, WMATA says.  Riders who need a shuttle should ask the station manager, or call 202-962-1825.

Here's the best part: if the up and down escalators fail during the elevator's four-month shutdown, the Bethesda Metro station "will need to temporarily close for safety reasons."

How can you have a station in a major town like Bethesda be virtually inaccessible via escalators on a regular basis?

At a corporation, leaders get fired for a performance like this.

Metro is a great system, and it and we deserve better than this.

The new southern elevator entrance to the Bethesda station cannot be built a minute too soon.

Check out the size of that 100% natural all-beef patty.  Now add Kraze Burgers' patented Maximum sauce.

How do you top that?  With a generous portion of house-made beef chili, of course!  Then some diced onions and fresh tomatoes, and American cheese, all on the original Kraze bun.

Hold on, though - the piece de resistance is the addition of french fries.

Yes, the fries are in the burger!

Hurry in, because this will only be available through next Tuesday.

Kraze Burgers, 4733 Elm Street, Bethesda.

ANGIE GOFF TO HOST THE FRONT ROW AT BETHESDA ROW

The DC area's biggest fashion event is here - The Front Row at Bethesda Row starts today!

If you and your girlfriends haven't planned a ladies night out tonight at The Row, get started now:

Finally, here are a couple of tips that aren't on there:

While I've told you about the after-party at Redwood on Bethesda Lane Friday night, there may also be an after-party tonight, after the free movie (God Save My Shoes at Bethesda Row Cinema at 7:30).

Rumor has it that tonight's after-party will be at Vapiano, at 4900 Hampden Lane.  There's nothing about this on the promo materials, so just take it as my hint pointing you in the right direction.  You can't go wrong heading to Vapiano anyway, particularly if you are out with friends tonight.

If there's a more official confirmation of this, I'll post it during the day on Twitter at @BethesdaRow.

The other big news is that NBC Washington's Angie Goff will be MOC of Friday night's fashion show, which also starts at 7:30 PM.
