Norfolk Avenue Bethesda Streetery to return on Fridays for summer concerts
A number of readers have been asking about the promised return of the Norfolk Avenue Bethesda Streetery in the spring of 2024. It appears the Streetery will return in a limited fashion for the late spring and summer seasons. Norfolk Avenue will close at St. Elmo Avenue on Fridays only during the Friday night Summer Concert Series events beginning on May 17, and ending on September 20. It's not clear yet whether the closure will terminate at Cordell Avenue, or at Del Ray Avenue, but the closures reportedly will begin each Friday during the concert season at 1:00 PM, and end at 10:00 PM Friday night.
The Streetery and the Summer Concert Series are both organized by the Bethesda Urban Partnership. Bethesda UP is continuing to pursue an effort to convert part of Norfolk Avenue into a permanent shared street. That concept was recommended in the 2017 Bethesda Downtown master plan. The Streetery was first established during the pandemic in 2020, and features seating areas for outdoor dining from nearby restaurants.

Norfolk Avenue Starbucks reopens in Bethesda (Photos)
Starbucks has reopened at 7700 Norfolk Avenue in downtown Bethesda, but with less room inside. The store closed for about a week as renovations continue at the Woodmont Crescent building. Work will continue inside and around the walled-off area that was created, which is getting an aesthetic thumbs-down from customers at the moment.
Neither Starbucks nor the property owner has said what the work is specifically related to, but it appears that parts of the floor are being torn up or cut into. Several upgrades and improvements are being made to the building, including the addition of an elevator.

Norfolk Avenue Streetery reopens to vehicle traffic in Bethesda (Photos)
The Norfolk Avenue Streetery's barricades and outdoor dining seating were removed yesterday in Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle, and that segment of Norfolk was reopened to vehicular traffic. Metered street parking has also resumed on both sides of the roadway. Bethesda Urban Partnership says that the Streetery has been taken away for the winter, and will return in the spring of 2024. In previous winters since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the Streetery remained in place with heated tent structures. Plans for a permanent Streetery to be constructed in the future have been discussed, but for now, all of Norfolk Avenue is open to cars.

Security camera appears at Norfolk Avenue Streetery in Bethesda
A mobile security camera was placed at the Norfolk Avenue Streetery in Bethesda this weekend. The solar-powered unit is overlooking the block closed to automobile traffic for outdoor dining between St. Elmo and Cordell Avenues. Similar units have been deployed in downtown Silver Spring this year by Montgomery County. Private businesses in Bethesda like CVS Pharmacy have utilized a different type of mobile camera unit, a talking robot, for several years as crime has spiked in the area.

Norfolk Avenue Streetery in Bethesda adds new seating options (Photos)
New seating has been added to the Norfolk Avenue Streetery in Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle. Round orange chairs have been paired with small, circular tables sized more for drinks, appetizers or a sandwich than a smorgasboard meal. New benches with different paint schemes have also been mixed in. It's interesting that these orange chairs and tiny tables were depicted in renderings shown at a March 2023 meeting on options for the permanent Norfolk Avenue Streetery area between St. Elmo and Del Ray Avenues that is currently being studied; a preferred alternative for that permanent closure is scheduled to be announced by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation later this year.

New trash cans at Norfolk Avenue Streetery in Bethesda (Photos)
New trash cans recently appeared at the Norfolk Avenue Streetery between St. Elmo And Cordell Avenues in Bethesda. They are a different, more modern-looking model than the standard can found around downtown Bethesda. Slightly smaller in capacity, they also are not yet labeled with Bethesda Urban Partnership graphics. It's not clear if their design will assist in curbing downtown Bethesda's pandemic-era pest issues.

Montgomery County Planning Department proposes permanent seizure of Norfolk Avenue Streetery in Bethesda
The Norfolk Avenue shared-street amenity proposed in the Bethesda Downtown master plan may not come to pass. It would have created a woonerf, a street shared by automobiles, cyclists, and pedestrians at low speeds. Montgomery County planning officials are now instead proposing to make the Norfolk Avenue Streetery outdoor dining space permanent between St. Elmo and Cordell Avenues, under the recommendation of the Bethesda Urban Partnership and the Bethesda Implementation Advisory Committee. They say it will accomplish some goals of the shared-street on a smaller scale, and for a lower price tag.
Instead of the current tables and seating used in the streetery area, the new proposal would fund permanent pavilion structures on that block of Norfolk. Renderings also show the asphalt roadway replaced or covered with another material. This would permanently block automobile traffic from traveling down the full length of Norfolk, and deep-six the promised shared-street connection of the Battery Lane area with Veterans Park and the core of the central business district.

Norfolk Avenue Starbucks reopening Monday for takeout/delivery with new social distancing rules
Social distancing markers were laid out Saturday outside the store, with only one customer allowed to enter at a time to retrieve their mobile order, or pick up for a delivery. Customers behind that person will be spaced six feet apart on the sidewalk (which of course makes it quite difficult for pedestrians walking past to stay six feet away from those folks, it should be noted). Masks are mandatory to enter the store, and the six-foot rule applies inside, as well.
