The Velvet Room speakeasy "coming soon" in Bethesda

The Velvet Room
missed a February 2025 target opening date, but is promising it is still "coming soon" to 8020 Norfolk Avenue in Bethesda. It will be a little different than originally planned when it does. Sometime over the winter, the concept changed from a bar with karaoke to a "speakeasy lounge." That would make it the second speakeasy lounge in the Bethesda area, with Turncoat having opened first in Friendship Heights last year. The Velvet Room may have one up on Turncoat, though, with the added intrigue of a door below street level, behind an iron gate. Can you keep a secret?

Their liquor license was approved in November, but I wonder if the owner has experience in this industry, especially having changed concepts so quickly.

I think there's good demand for a high-end cocktail bar, if they can execute.

Anyone been to Turncoat lately? It was packed when it first opened, but I wonder how it's doing now, given that the Heights Food Hall doesn't seem to be going that well (empty restaurant spaces).

Robert you might need to explain to people exactly what a SPEAKEASY is since some including me are not that familiar with the term and how it relates to Bars and Hangouts………..

We could use a just a 'neighborhood' bar like old Dunsmor. I hope this new one isn't all gimmicky.
