Bethesda Florist moving

One of the oldest businesses still operating in downtown Bethesda is Bethesda Florist at 4934 St. Elmo Avenue. The shop will soon be moving about 4 blocks away, to a new address they plan to publicly announce"soon." Their existing storefront is among several buildings that will soon be demolished to make way for a new apartment tower. Bethesda Florist has been a family-owned-and-operated business for over 65 years.

Interesting. This is the 2nd time they have moved in their history. They started on the corner across from Old Geo'twn Grill. They own that building so hopefully did very well on their sale. Great to see a local business staying and thriving.

Love Bethesda Florist! I’d follow them anywhere.

i appreciate their willingness to make a delivery to NE DC. Not all florists would.

Glad they're staying in the neighborhood. Disgusted that they're being displaced for another bloated UNNEEDED building.

Downtown Bethesda needs more mixed-use projects with Class A retail topped by multi-family housing that includes as many MPDU’s as possible, close to transit. This is exactly what is NEEDED. Florists, optometrists, martial arts studios and restaurants are welcome to move to other vacant Class C locations nearby.

The Department of Assessment and Taxation website says the the property ownership transferred to STE3 LLC, on 12/08/2014, for $1,910,000. Invested well, that would be more than double today.

What is Class A retail?

Class A Retail is roughly defined by the ICSC, the International Council of Shopping Centers, as having at least 18’ tall ceilings, very large wall to wall and floor to ceiling double insulated glazing adjacent to a heavily used public pathway. Modern and efficient HVAC systems, sound isolation from other tenants also play a factor.

50 to 75 year old stores in the Woodmont Triangle can of course be successful retail spaces, given the right tenants.
