Both Chevy Chase Amazon Fresh stores closing
The Amazon Fresh grocery stores in Friendship Heights and at Chevy Chase Lake will permanently close this Sunday, February 1, 2026. Amazon is closing all of its Amazon Fresh and Go grocery stores across the country, as a very expensive experiment with Amazon-branded physical grocery stores by the retail giant concludes. In Montgomery County, that means the losses of Amazon Fresh stores at Chevy Chase Lake, Friendship Heights, Shady Grove Road on the border of Rockville and Gaithersburg, and White Oak. It's an especially raw deal for all involved at the Chevy Chase locations, as residents of Chevy Chase Lake had expected to have an on-site grocery store, Friendship Heights residents will now have only the hipster house brands of Trader Joe's and Whole Foods Market as full-size supermarkets within walking distance, and the Chevy Chase Land Company was counting on both to anchor their respective developments of Chevy Chase Lake and the Collection at Chevy Chase.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there's a covenant in that center that requires a grocery store. Harris Teeter would rock there. I do not see the Aldi and Lidl level store there and hoping either of those don't come in. Publix would never come this far north but that site does work for them. They don't open locations with underground parking. Very old school. That's the best full service grocer in the country. Amazon Fresh was just strange . Amazing tech but a little too techy even for 2026.
Bring back Chevy Chase Supermarket. They had good produce, well-stocked shelves offering a broad selection of items, and had a staff that was always friendly and helpful.
What's odd is based on the Amazon announcement, all/most those locations will still be open as distribution centers to provide Amazon Fresh delivery but won't be open to the public. I guess there isn't enough physical customer traffic to justify all the staff?
I see an opportunity for Aldi to fill in the gaps.
Aldi would be great!
Hear, hear! I loved the take-out meal that hey had!
The Amazon Fresh space was previously home to a Giant. With the recent addition of Trader Joe's in the Chevy Chase Pavilion across the street and the popularity of Whole Foods at The Shops, I am sure it will be hard pressed for another supermarket to come in.
Publix is not better than HEB
Bezos will write it all off, just like the total "Melania" flop
HEB is great. I've been in San Antonio. But Publix is hard to beat for a full size grocer. They would destroy all others here they are that good.
Perhaps a good spot for a data center?
Whenever I shopped there, I saw more delivery shoppers than regular shoppers.
Some Amazon Fresh stores are being converted to Whole Foods. A few supposedly will be distribution centers.
And when the CVS closes, bring back Psckett’s!
I was there three or four times, and between fumbling with those automated shopping carts that kept making mistakes, and the poor/low quality food selection, I was done. Good riddance.
Good riddance.... Bring back the Chevy Chase Market team or someone who knows how to run a grocery store. I rarely saw an Amazon employee smile or be able to answer a question.
I think not one employee was 'local.'
Have fond memories of Walter. Great service, great market.
The Chevy Chase Market was wonderful. I often think of Walter and the wonderful customer service.
Publix is WIC-land.
Ain't happening, they were a family-owned business that sadly ran its course.
