Montgomery County police were called to Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda on the evening of November 12, 2024, after someone reported having been assaulted there. The assault was reported at 9:34 PM Tuesday. This was the eleventh assault reported this year at the popular mall. Only five were reported there in 2023.
This year's total is now just one away from matching the twelve assaults reported at the retail center in 2022. That led to Montgomery County police opening a "resource room" at the mall, in an attempt to combat elevated crime at the property - part of a general crime wave that has persisted countywide since 2020, after the County Council defunded the police. The police department is down 194 officers since 2020, and 179 police officer positions are now vacant, according to a County Council staff memo released earlier this year.

Tell us the facts about this assault, or are they too insignificant to matter?
8:50: I can only report the information provided by police at this time. Should further information be released by MCPD, I will post an update.
"part of a general crime wave that has persisted countywide since 2020, after the County Council defunded the police." This feels like editorial speculation. Yes, defunding the police might have led to this increase in crime, but there also might be broader reasons for it. Maybe this crime wave is happening in other areas that havent defunded their forces. There are many factors that lead to crime. Even though I think we agree on the need for police funding, I still don't like seeing this kind of biased, speculative reporting in local news media.
Make Montgomery Mall Great Again!
Comrade elrich hopefully will lose by 48 votes in the next election cycle trying to run for "at large" councilmarxist. He is literally THE definition of incorrigible.
MCPD only blesses us with snippets of pertinent facts and certainly benefits from parsing out info to keep us all unaware of the magnitude. Not only can we not properly protect ourselves but we are deemed unworthy of learning what threats we face
@5:04 PM ... Actually, Elrich won't be able to run for county executive again. He and future CEs were term limited (two terms) by the referendum vote this month.

They are under the impression that we cannot handle the truth!
He's running for "at large", I never mentioned "executive", but thank you.
If you stop going there it will be great.
Such a myopic view of the world. If you'd take a look around the nation you might discover that this crime problem is not germane to just the county you live in. You may also discover that the MAGA moniker 'defunding the police', is so dated and obsolete, it gives you a grandfatherly mentality.
I'll take your money now, right now on that sad bet.
