Chase Bank nears opening on River Road in Bethesda (Photos)

The new Chase Bank branch at 5135 River Road in Bethesda is close to welcoming its first customers. Construction appears in the final phase, with furnishings and interior decoration being completed inside, and signage installed on the exterior. The former Bank of America/NationsBank/Maryland National Bank building has been being overhauled since this past spring. While most banks are shuttering branches, Chase is expanding rapidly in the Washington, D.C. region, with seven new locations about to open.

At least the building no longer looks like an abandoned WWII concrete bunker.

Everything about this location looks like it’s meant for a bank robbery getaway. Gives me the creeps honestly.

@10:12 totally agree with you!

Who at Chase thought this was a good location for this? Seriously. I'd like to see the pitch and powerpoint for it.

It would have made a perfect location for Popeyes!

@9:40 AM Thanks! It seems absolutely nuts that a bank branch would be approved/built on a "relatively" high speed road with multiple ways to escape. I'm never going in this place.

That whole stretch is too hard to get in and out of. I save my few attempts for 'cheap' fuel when it's easy and I'm on that side of the road. What dd rule did J. Edgar Hoover live by? No left turns!

@ 10:49 AM: given that bank branches see minimal use these days, someone noted recently that they are essentially advertising billboards. And this is a high-visibility location. And Chase is noted for this. E.g. the two former gas station sites around the Woodmont Triangle.
